Ever so often, hip hop has Introduced us to certain artists that have potential to define the sound of their era, time, and or genre.
GirlzLuhDev, a California-based artist is showing current hip hop fans that he has lasting power.
With his ability to not only rap but also sing and write, he has monumental potential to follow the steps of those that came before him.
When discussing his recent surge of momentum, he elaborated on how quickly and recently he has acquired a recent notary.
“Well, I really began taking music seriously when I dropped my second song and it caught 100k. It showed me I had real potential.
100k listens on SoundCloud later, GirlzLuhDev has realized his potential to be in the presence of artists like Trippie Redd and Lil Uzi Vert as they were some of the few artists that made their name on the now instrumental platform that seems essential to that of a current artist.
“Recently, after getting with my team and the label I’ve begun to see the bigger picture. I am staying on top of my YouTube and iTunes and things of that nature. But I’ll ALWAYS check my SoundCloud. I feel like SoundCloud is more the streets and what’s hot.”
Recently GirlzLuhDev dropped a project, Day 1 Starter. Even if you were not an avid fan of Dev, The nine-track project has consistency and showcases Dev’s potential as a do it all artist. His ability to control the tone and mood of the song is evident from the first song to the last.
When asking Dev which was his favorite song on the project, he struggled to pick one in particular because of how much he enjoyed the process of the entire project.
“I don’t know man, I really would lean towards Used To,I feel like that’s really a relatable song for everyone that’s going through something.”
He briefly discusses his writing process and how instrumental insight in life situations can help him with his creative process.
“Emotions make the best songs, so when someone does me wrong or something like that it’s definitely fuel. I’m trying to make music that is appreciated.”
While elaborating, Dev emphasized how overthinking could cloud the process if you don’t have a real vision and concept of what you’re trying to do.
“Recently I’ve been riding the way I used to write when I initially started making music and I find it easier to freestyle things and then tweak them as I go. It makes things a little easier in terms of the flow.”
Discussing his future, it was clear longevity is the goal. He has a checklist that’s far from finished but it seems to fan the flame of that which drives him.
“In 5 years, I want a big chunky ol crib and everything in between. But I wanna make sure that we do everything the right way.”
When asking if there was anyone he would’ve loved to have featured on the project that he wasn’t able to work with, it was clear that he’s playing for the home team and wasn’t in a rush to go feature crazy.
“Roddy Rich.I feel like if we did a tape it would be classic. For the city man, we need that. The city would go crazy. Other than that man I just wanna be a master of my craft.”
Safe to say GirlzLuhDev has not only the mindset but the potential to be a topic of discussion for years to come when it comes to where hip hop could be.
