‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Cast Reflects on New York Comic Con 20th

Michael C. Hall reveals how the cast helps shape the second season

The cast of Dexter: Resurrection reflected on the creative trust, long-standing relationships and collaborative process behind the series during press roundtables at New York Comic Con, with Michael C. Hall discussing what it means to return to familiar faces after two decades of playing Dexter Morgan.

Working alongside cast members such as David Zayas, James Remar and Desmond Harrington brings a rare connection to the screen. Having spent years building their characters and relationships, the actors can draw from a shared history that goes beyond what appears in the script.

“Anytime that happens, especially at this point, you know, someone with whom you have 20 year old memories, you don’t have to imagine the backstory, like you lived it,” Hall told The Knockturnal. “It’s an amazing sort of and unique thing about playing a character for this long that you can sit in that with another actor and luxuriate in the real history that you share.”

That history gives the returning cast a foundation to explore their characters without having to recreate the relationships from scratch. As Dexter: Resurrection continues the story of the serial killer who has anchored the franchise since its debut, the actors can use their familiarity with one another to inform their performances. The collaborative nature of the production also extends to the working relationship between the cast and the show’s creators, Scott and Clyde. That established shorthand allows conversations about scenes and character choices to move forward with a shared understanding of the material.

Director Marcos Siega’s approach was another point of discussion, with Hall describing a fluid, choreographic style that helps integrate Dexter’s appearances into the story. The approach allows scenes to develop with a sense of movement while keeping Hall’s character connected to the surrounding action. Trust between the actors and the people behind the series is another defining part of the production. Jack Alcott and Bokeem Woodbine discussed the creative freedom afforded to the cast, with the production team allowing performers room to make choices while remaining available to provide direction when a scene needs it.

That balance gives actors the opportunity to bring their own instincts to their roles without losing sight of the larger story. Rather than dictating every detail of a performance, the team creates an environment where ideas can be tested and developed in collaboration. One example came while Hall was working on the final episode of Dexter: Resurrection. During a scene involving Harry, Dexter’s late father and longtime moral guide, Hall suggested a change that he believed would strengthen the moment. The writers embraced the idea, resulting in a scene that better served the character.

The anecdote illustrated how collaboration can extend beyond the initial script, with the cast contributing to the emotional impact of the story as it takes shape. For a franchise built around a character whose inner life often conflicts with the people closest to him, those relationships remain an important part of the series. At New York Comic Con, the cast’s reflections showed how years of shared experience, trust in the creative team and openness to new ideas continue to shape Dexter: Resurrection.
