During the press conference at San Diego Comic Con, the creative team behind The Walking Dead Universe offered a glimpse into what could be next for the franchise beyond The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
While AMC has already confirmed that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will return in 2027, franchise chief content officer Scott M. Gimple revealed there are several additional ideas being explored behind the scenes. Although he stopped short of revealing specific details, Gimple said the immediate priority is getting the current slate of series in front of audiences before turning attention to future projects.
“We’re working on a few different things, but the focus now is on the show, obviously,” Gimple said. “Getting Season 3 in front of people and then getting that next season of Daryl Dixon in 2027. There’s some really cool stuff, but we’ll see if it happens.”
His comments suggest AMC is continuing to develop new stories while maintaining its focus on the existing lineup of spinoffs. Since the original The Walking Dead concluded in 2022, the franchise has expanded through character focused series following Negan and Maggie in Dead City, Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier in Daryl Dixon, and Rick Grimes and Michonne in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Together, those series have continued to expand the shared universe while allowing each story to stand on its own.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who has portrayed Negan for nearly a decade, acknowledged there is one idea that both the cast and fans continue to hope becomes a reality.
“I’ll say what Scott’s alluding to,” Morgan said. “We hope that happens at some point, that we all come back together and do a season.”
Although neither Morgan nor Gimple confirmed that a large scale crossover is officially in development, their comments are likely to fuel speculation that AMC is considering a future event bringing together the franchise’s biggest surviving characters. With Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Carol, Negan, and Maggie all active within the current universe, the possibility of another ensemble story has become increasingly realistic.
For now, Gimple said the team’s attention remains on getting The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 in front of fans and preparing the next season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for its 2027 return. Even so, the conversation at San Diego Comic Con showed there is plenty happening behind the scenes. While nothing has been officially announced, both Gimple and Morgan made it clear they would love to see the franchise’s biggest characters reunite one day, a possibility that is sure to keep fans talking as the universe continues to grow.
