This season, Concept Korea presented two menswear designers, DBYD by Dong-jun Kang and Ordinary People by Hyeong-cheol Jang.
DBYD’s I’m yours and I’m not yours collection focused on changing colors based on mood and emotion from Spike Jonze’s film HER. The rigid dichotomy of “being” and “owning” are encompassed within the color scheme of sand beiges, melange grays, and burgundies implemented into comfortable fabrics such as wool, cotton, and denim. Looks down the runway expressed a broken structure of conflicting feelings inspired by the film’s cinematography. The diffusion line of D.GNAK this season conveys a more sophisticated story in its bold patterns and cuts than its more loud and young aesthetic from the past.
Ordinary People’s Hotel People brings the audience into a world of sanguine and uplifted feelings. The collection tells the story of the people in a modern boutique hotel and the lifestyle accompanied with the holiday times. Chic and luxurious silks and suede showcase every element within Ordinary People’s envisioned hotel. The pieces took on a comfortable and relaxed feel in its neutral colorway.
We had a chance to talk one on one with the designers about their collections:
DBYD by Kang Dong Jun
“This collection was inspired by the movie HER. The movie is about a writer falling in love with a device, this collection shows the conflict of whether he wants to be possessive with the device or appreciate and love the device as it is. The color palette consists of shades of ivory and burgundy, which were also inspired by the movie. The movie expresses the colors of writer’s mood, with the ivory representing loneliness and burgundy representing affection towards the device.”
Ordinary People by Hyeong-cheol Jang
“The inspiration comes from the interior and patterns of boutique hotels as well as the people inside them. In addition, Korean traditional garments are added into the pieces. Soft pink was used in the first looks as well beige, gray, and navy.”
In addition to the beginning of the fashion week shows, after parties are also on to a start. We had a chance to stop by Edmund Ooi’s NYFW Men’s After Party at the Boom Boom Room of the Standard Hotel later on in the night. The gathering was intimate and relaxed with breathtaking views and a soothing ambiance.
