The Knockturnal had the pleasure of attending the 2023 Newport Beach International Boat Show. Newport Beach’s International Boat Show is an immersive experience that showcases boats ranging from luxurious yachts to powerful speedboats. Visitors have the opportunity to step into the super yachts and envision the possibilities of their future life on yachts as gorgeous as the Ocean Alexander. If guests prefer speed over opulence, they can observe cutting-edge technology of the high-performance speedboats and other watercraft. In addition to yachts and speedboats, the show displays watersports like lift foils for the adventure seekers. The show’s organizers have curated a show that appeals to any visitor’s interest.

The event was organized by Nancy Davis, an advocate for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the founder of both the organization and the Center Without Walls. The gala aimed to raise funds for the Race to Erase MS and its Center Without Walls program, which brings together top MS research centers to collaborate on groundbreaking research for treating and finding a cure for MS.

Celebrating “The Crossover” Premiere

The Knockturnal had the honor of attending “The Crossover” premiere at the Hollywood Athletic Club. “The Crossover” is the television adaptation of Kwame Alexander’s novel-in-verse. Alexander won the 2015 John Newbery Medal and a Coretta Scott King author honor for his work, and serves as the executive producer and showrunner for the new series. “The Crossover” follows Josh (Jalyn Hall), nicknamed “Filthy”, and Jordan Bell (Amir O’Neil) throughout their middle school experience while they figure out how to balance their social life, school, and basketball. The teenagers are coached by their dad (Derek Luke), a former professional basketball player.

Laugh Out Loud with Mae Martin

The Knockturnal had the opportunity to attend Netflix’s Laugh Out Loud event hosted by Mae Martin at the Netflix Tudum Theater in Los Angeles. Mae Martin is a writer, actor, and comedian best-known for creating and starring in Netflix’s show “FEEL GOOD”. Laugh Out Loud celebrated Martin’s first hour-long stand-up comedy special “SAP” which premiered on Netflix on March 28th. Martin wanted the set to encapsulate the area in which it was filmed, Vancouver, Canada, which is why the set is decorated with fairy lights and mystical trees. Attendees had the pleasure of viewing a trailer of Martin’s special with jokes ranging from what it’s like to be a kid at summer camp, encountering a moose in the woods, and an exploration of gender. The event consisted of comedy sets by LGBTQIA+ comedians, including Sabrina Jalees, Megan Stalter, Joel Kim Booster, and Nori Reed. Each comedian had a unique style that contributed to the energy in the room. Stalter even did a hilarious reading of a few lines from her book at the end of her set.

Prom Pact Premiere

The Knockturnal had the privilege of attending Prom Pact’s premiere on the pink carpet at the Wilshire Ebell theater. The red carpet attendees were dressed accordingly, with colorful prom dresses to fit the theme of the 80’s promposals displayed in the film.  (Graham) stated that their favorite part of working on the movie was becoming friends with each other. Milo recalls sitting on his balcony after a workday, and discussing the craft of acting with his peers. The pink carpet displayed how tight-knit the cast was, with each Disney star jumping at the opportunity to support their friend, or hug a castmate on camera.

The Fifth American Black Film Festival Honors

The Knockturnal had the privilege of attending the fifth American Black Film Festival Honors. The annual awards season gala pays tribute to black excellence in the television and cinema industry. It is a timely celebration that precedes the Oscars, and it is a unique awards show in the sense the event focuses on honoring and celebrating black artists, rather than winners and losers. This awards show is significant because without it, there may be black artists that get overlooked. Interviewees emphasized the importance of the general public seeing work that represents black individuals created by black artists. The creatives reinforced the idea that television and cinema informed by black artists has the capacity to change the audiences’ perceptions through accurately depicted representation.
