The Knockturnal had the privilege of attending Create Studios Venice opening night. Jim Budman’s vision was to create a space that “delivers a unique experience for its guests and clients to create and live amongst art simultaneously.” (Budman).
Budman integrates his artwork throughout the event space. It causes the visitors to wonder if this is a space to connect, create, or enjoy. As Budman hoped, it’s all three! Budman’s exhibit included warm lighting and couches, in which the walls were decorated with art from the 1960s. Guests were able to enjoy small talk about the art while sitting in the essence of a living room. Moreover, there was an upstairs area in which guests could partake in a game of pool. In this room, there was a combination of brightly colored surfboards, and David Bowie light fixtures.
Since the spaces were so inviting, it allowed guests to converse longer about the art. The event space was adorned with beautiful flower arrangements. The space was lit with disco balls and dynamic polka dot lighting. As you walked into the central room, you were greeted with a DJ and a cocktail bar. To sustain the attendees through their viewing experience, pizza from Prince St. Pizza was provided. Each room celebrated a unique style or genre of art. Local artists were there to present their exhibition and explain their connection to the Create Studios space.
Elizabeth Orleans displayed her geometric and organic ceramics. Ivan Butoric presented his “Spray Can Exhibit”. This exhibit used format film and digital photography to merge the worlds of popular culture and graffiti. Butoric intended for the viewer to consider their own self-expression, and the various mediums through which this can be achieved. Anna Sagan presented her colorful, abstract pieces which were meant to inspire the viewers with a sense of hopefulness.
The art displayed in the event space will continuously change, as new artists are invited to display their work and create new pieces.
