Glenmorangie x Ardbeg Winter Tasting

by Meaghan Merriman December 18, 2022
written by Meaghan Merriman

The Knockturnal attended a Glenmorangie and Ardbeg Whisky tasting at Horses in West Hollywood. To begin the evening, we were handed a delightful themed cocktail titled “Winter in LA”. The cocktail was made with original Glenmorangie, lemon, chamomile, honey, pink grapefruit juice, manzanilla sherry, cinnamon, and soda. Then we sat at an intimate dining table decorated with roses and candles.

We proceeded to try the first nose tasting of whisky, glenmorangie’s truffle oak reserve 26 year old whisky. The flavor profile in this consisted of maple syrup, peaches, and cinnamon. Then, we were served our first course which was a delicious salad. Next we nosed and tasted Glenmorangie’s Cask 0004 which was a rare and unique whisky, with a molasses-like flavor. This whisky was spicier and more impactful than the first. Our main course for dinner was steak which paired well with the spirits. Finally, we were able to taste a rare Ardbeg, Ardbeg Cask NO. 0343. This was much stronger than the other two, and this encapsulated a smokiness while also having a floral side. To conclude the evening the guests were given the choice of tiramisu or cheesecake for dessert. Glenmorangie and Ardbeg even gave their guests a send off gift consisting of one their favorite whiskys, “A Tale of the Forest”. Overall, it was a lovely evening with Glenmorangie and Ardbeg.

Celebrating the 40th Outfest Legacy Awards

The Outfest Legacy Awards celebrated its 40th year in late October at Paramount Studios. Outfest Legacy began with UCLA students trying to find a way to support LGBTQIA+ representation in the media. Now, the non-profit organization continues to “create visibility to diverse LGBTQIA+ stories and empowers storytellers, building empathy to drive meaningful social change.” Kerri Stoughton Jackson plays a big role in the success of Outfest. Jackson began her involvement as a volunteer, and now runs the program of over 500 volunteers while holding the title of Deputy Director. Jackson was awarded the Outfest Jonathan Howard Legacy Award. Additionally, Amazon’s diversity and inclusion branch ‘Glamazon’ was awarded the Corporate Award, for the company’s efforts to advocate and provide mentorship for their employees. Moreover, the Star Trek franchise celebrated their win of the Visionary Award, for their outstanding efforts in representation over the years. The guest of honor, Janelle Monae, was awarded the Trailblazer Award. Monae has been involved with efforts such as advocating for The Trevor Project’s Suicide Prevention, co-chair for When We All Vote, and creating the Fem the Future initiative. Fem the Future aims to provide a platform for women in the arts industry spreading the word about their visions for their future. In addition to Monae’s effervescent talent as an actress and a Grammy winner, there is no denying that she is a feminist ally. All of the other guests were thrilled that Janelle Monae would be in attendance.

The common thread throughout the red carpet interviews, and throughout the evening, was that these individuals have a vision of the future in which there is no need to have a separate awards ceremony for the LGBTQIA+ community. The industry hopes that representation will be so commonplace that it will be unnecessary to celebrate the LGBTQIA+’s achievements separately.

In order to celebrate Outfest, Paramount Studios transformed one of their filming lots into a white tablecloth dining area for the donors. The theatrics of the lot, such as colorful spotlights all over the buildings, made it feel like a very special evening. At one point during the evening, it started raining in Los Angeles. This only added romanticism to the night, as the waitstaff was prepared with ponchos for all of the guests. Overall, Paramount Studios hosted a lovely evening to celebrate the 40th Outfest Legacy Awards. janelle monae at outfest legacy awards

Skam Summer Music Summit: Day 3

by Meaghan Merriman September 20, 2022
written by Meaghan Merriman

Skam Land looked more like Candy Land on the final evening of the Music Summit.

The Knockturnal attended SKAM Summer Music Summit. The Highlight Room, atop the Dream Hollywood Hotel,  transformed into a whimsical world filled with candy and games in order to celebrate Sujit Kundu, the founder of SKAM artist and SKAM Division. Kundu began his DJ and talent booking agency in 2004 and is now one of the top booking agencies in the U.S. The SKAM division covers a wide range of talent from pop music to EDM with an outstanding roster of DJs such as Apollo XO, DJ Scene, and many more.

Tyga hosted Sujit Kundu’s ’27th 21st’ birthday party, and the child-like theme encapsulated his everlasting youth. Guests could explore several outdoor glowing games such as jenga or pinball, and to make this party a little more adult, guests could enjoy El Cristiano Tequila, a sponsor of the Music Summit. Whether guests were playing games, indulging in candy, or dancing with their cocktails in hand, listening to the music took the party to another level. It’s clear Kundu knows what he’s doing when it comes to finding the right music, and this party was no different. With musical guests DJ Irie and Sourmilk, guests were guaranteed to have an amazing night.

On The Scene: The Creative Coalition’s Television Humanitarian Awards

by Meaghan Merriman September 20, 2022
written by Meaghan Merriman

The Knockturnal had the privilege of attending The Creative Coalition’s Television Humanitarian Awards. The event was hosted in Beverly Hills by Variety’s Marc Malkin during Emmy’s weekend. The Humanitarian Awards honor a special cohort of talented actors that use their publicity for social good. Among this year’s winners were Emmy nominees James Cromwell, Colman Domingo, Samantha Hanratty, Cheryl Hines, and several more. Once the actors were presented with their award, they had the opportunity to speak about the cause they support. The notorious James Cromwell in Succession delivered an impactful speech that described how all of this planet’s issues are intertwined, especially when it comes to climate change. Cromwell stated he is ‘not afraid to get arrested’, and his involvement in the civil rights movement up until his recent public displays of activism demonstrate his commitment to leaving this world a better place than he found it. Following Cromwell was Emmy winner Colman Domingo accepting his Humanitarian Award for the work he has done with the Legal Defense Fund. Domingo emphasized the responsibility celebrities have to spread awareness, especially being on a show like Euphoria. His on-screen and in-person charm leads us to believe it is only the beginning for Domingo (but no, he couldn’t give us any spoilers to Euphoria season 4). Next up was Yellow Jacket’s Samantha Hanratty accepting an award for the Mac Pac Foundation which supports individuals with HBSL. Hanratty credited her commitment to the cause to her best friend who lives with HBSL. Finally, Curb Your Enthusiam’s Cheryl Hines accepted her Humanitarian Award for her involvement with United Cerebral Palsy. Hines’ heart opened to UCP when her nephew was born with Cerebral Palsy and her work is never-ending. Hines meets with Congress to advocate for the protection of medicaid to ensure care for individuals living with disabilities. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Creative Coalition served salmon paired with white wine. The Television Humanitarian Awards was situated in-between Emmy’s weekends and served as a reminder that there is more to life than who won or lost. The event encapsulated how important the arts are to cultivate creativity and spread awareness to inspire social change.
