The Knockturnal had the opportunity to attend Netflix’s Laugh Out Loud event hosted by Mae Martin at the Netflix Tudum Theater in Los Angeles. Mae Martin is a writer, actor, and comedian best-known for creating and starring in Netflix’s show “FEEL GOOD”. Laugh Out Loud celebrated Martin’s first hour-long stand-up comedy special “SAP” which premiered on Netflix on March 28th. Martin wanted the set to encapsulate the area in which it was filmed, Vancouver, Canada, which is why the set is decorated with fairy lights and mystical trees. Attendees had the pleasure of viewing a trailer of Martin’s special with jokes ranging from what it’s like to be a kid at summer camp, encountering a moose in the woods, and an exploration of gender. The event consisted of comedy sets by LGBTQIA+ comedians, including Sabrina Jalees, Megan Stalter, Joel Kim Booster, and Nori Reed. Each comedian had a unique style that contributed to the energy in the room. Stalter even did a hilarious reading of a few lines from her book at the end of her set.
Following the comedians, audiences had the pleasure of viewing a conversation between Mae Martin and Abbi Jacobson. Martin and Jacobson have cultivated a special relationship as it was Martin’s first special and Jacobson’s first time directing stand-up. The conversation between Jacobson and Martin revealed their level of trust and support for one another. Then, the creatives opened themselves up to a question and answer from the audience. The audience asked Martin and Jacobson about their friendship and their creative process. Subsequently, the attendees were able to celebrate Mae Martin at the reception which provided drinks and appetizers. The celebration was filled with notable guests such as Sophia Bush, Zackary Drucker, Brett Goldstein, Natalie Morales, Sarah Catherine Hook, Zoe Lister-Jones, Ashlee Marie Preston who were all there supporting Mae. Laugh Out Loud was a wonderful experience and everyone should watch Mae Martin’s SAP on Netflix out now!
