We caught up with actor, musician, and producer, Diego Boneta to discuss his Got Milk campaign among other things happening in the triple threat’s life.
This brand new Got Milk campaign reminds us how much better it feels to be authentic. The ad campaign stars Diego Boneta in a music video that kicks off with the lyrics, “If the world was as real as real milk.” There’s nothing quite like showing off who we really are and the things that make us unique. As the music video continues, the repeated phrase is, “If the world could be real all around.” Boneta walks through this music video watching as the world steps away from the urge to filter out the bad things in life and stops trying to be perfect. Got Milk reminds us how much better it is to be unapologetically yourself and to share that with the world.
We also had the chance to discuss some of Diego Boneta’s new projects with his production company, Three Amigos. The one exciting me the most is the up-and-coming rom-comedy podcast, Cupid. This podcast follows Cupid as Zeus discovers he’s lost Aphrodite’s love potion and puts the Love God himself on a quest to retrieve it. This concept stemmed from Boneta’s love for Greek Mythology, and with the help of his Three Amigos partners and Katy Jupe, they’ve created a fresh, creative new idea.
Check out Boneta’s new Got Milk Campaign here!
The Knockturnal: Hi Diego, Thank you for taking time out of your day to speak with me.
Diego Boneta: Of course, Nicole. Thank you.
The Knockturnal: First I want to congratulate you on your new Got Milk campaign. Got Milk is such a memorable & well-known ad campaign, how did it feel to leave your own mark on such an iconic moment in media history?
Diego Boneta: I was very flattered that they asked me to be a part of this campaign. I think that Got Milk is notorious for doing iconic campaigns, you know? I remember when I was a kid looking at the ads with the little milk mustache. So when they asked me to be a part of this ‘Get Real’ campaign with Got Milk, I was very flattered.
The Knockturnal: I can imagine! In your ad campaign you mentioned your favorite way to enjoy milk was milkshakes… so I was wondering if you have a favorite flavor that you always reach for?
Diego Boneta: Oh chocolate milkshake for sure. Also cereal, I love milk with cereal as well.
The Knockturnal: So that milk that’s leftover at the end is your favorite part?
Diego Boneta:*laughs* Yes, exactly, exactly.
The Knockturnal: I get it, that’s the best. Also in the ad campaign you said to keep it real you need to surround yourself with people who can call you out , is there anyone in particular who is a go-to person when you need to kind of set yourself straight?
Diego Boneta: My family. You know, my parents, my siblings, they always have called me out whenever there’s been a need to. And my best friends as well. I try to surround myself with people who are genuine and authentic and not just ‘yessers’. You know, people who are real.
The Knockturnal: Yeah I love that! And to speak a bit about your acting, your new adaptation of Father of the Bride is a much more modern version of the story, what in particular do you want people to take away from that movie
Diego Boneta: That’s a great question. I think first of all, you should watch it with your family because it’s a perfect family film. I think that with my character, it’s a more modern way of masculinity. Adan is a guy who is not afraid to follow his wife so she can fulfill her dreams and support her. I think that’s something that really stuck with me with this character. And just how family is number one. I’m a big family guy.
The Knockturnal: Recently, you and your company Three Amigos signed a deal with Amazon’s Prime Video, are there any certain stories you want to tell or be a part of for this partnership?
Diego Boneta: Yeah for sure, we have a lot of stuff we’re developing with them, from tv shows, to limited series, to movies. For us its just about finding the best stories, some of them are Latin based, others aren’t. We want to create projects that are universal and global even if they take place in Mexico, Latin America, or the United States. We want them all to have a universal approach.
The Knockturnal: Yeah definitely! Speaking of your company Three Amigos, how does it feel to be behind the camera and starring in your own projects?
Diego Boneta: Its a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to produce. Ever since I worked with Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages and I saw how he was doing post on a movie he wrapped, shooting Rock of AGes, and doing pre-production on his next movie. I was like “Man, thats just the dream”. Luis Miguel was the first show I produced and that opened the doors. So did ‘New Order’ which was a movie that won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. That opened the door for this to happen and its truly a dream come true and its great to be able to do it with my sister, Natalia Boneta, and my best friend, Josh Glick, who is also my manager.
The Knockturnal: Yeah, that’s amazing! Really keeping it in the family.
Diego Boneta: Yeah!
The Knockturnal: Now speaking of Rock of Ages, that was actually the first time I saw you on the screen was when I was 11 and I’m 20 now.
Diego Boneta: Oh wow!!
The Knockturnal: So I have to ask… Do you have anything new that may have some sort of musical element… because I really loved Rock of Ages and Luis Miguel?
Diego Boneta: Thank you! Thank you so much, Nicole. Yeah with the Amazon project we have a musical we’re developing. And there’s also a podcast coming out called ‘Cupid’ which will be out very soon that has a musical element as well.
The Knockturnal: Speaking of the new podcast Cupid, how did you come up with this cool concept because it puts such a new, interesting twist on the story?
Diego Boneta: It was something both Josh and I were talking about because we’re both big fans of Greek Mythology. We were wondering how there isn’t a movie or project about Cupid and the God of Love having to fall in love for the first time. That’s kind of where the idea came about and we spoke to Katy Jupe who took the idea and created something incredible with the world of the Greek Gods and she just flew with it and created something fresh, new, and creative. Her approach was amazing.
The Knockturnal: Going back to Luis Miguel, I know a lot of people were shocked to see how well you recreated those scenes and music videos. How did you go about embodying him and recreating all those songs?
Diego Boneta: It was hours and hours of Youtube and looking at his mannerisms during the different stages of his life. Also something that was really helpful was preparing with my acting coach, Juan Carlos Corazza who really helped me with the creation and becoming Luis Miguel. It was truly a becoming and I played him for 33 years from age 17 to 50. It was a lot of hours of looking at Youtube and studying the smallest details.
The Knockturnal: I can’t even begin to imagine how long that took. Just to wrap this up about the Got Milk campaign. It’s about really being unapologetically yourself. Is there anything, maybe a passion or hobby, that makes you unapologetically yourself
Diego Boneta: I’m a big fan of swords and I’ve always collected swords. I polish them and take really good care of them. It’s been something I’ve done since I was a kid and I’d say thats something I’m unapologetically passionate about
The Knockturnal: Wow that’s so cool! I’m really excited to see what you do in the future and listen to that podcast ‘Cupid’. Unfortunately that’s all the time we have. It was a pleasure talking to you and thank you for making the time for me.
Diego Boneta; Of course Nicole! It was a pleasure talking to you too and thank you for all your questions. It was great to talk to someone who has done the research so thank you so much!
