Estevan Oriol is a legendary photographer who captured the world of Hip-Hop in Los Angeles and around the world. Starting out as a hip-hop club bouncer, he later became a tour manager for LA rap groups like Cyprus Hill and House of Pain. After experiencing the world and with these artists, he decided to shift to photography, capturing the life and culture of LA hip-hop, Latino urban gang culture, and tattoo culture. His reputation as a photographer quickly rose and he began shooting for the likes of Al Pacino, Robert Dinero, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Snoop Dog, Floyd Mayweather, and many others. Alongside photography, Estevan directed media projects for Cadillac, MetroPCS, MTV, and Apple, as well as directing music videos for Eminem, Cypress Hill, Blink 182, and Snoop Dogg.
The new Netflix film explores the Chicano culture and landmarks in LA that gave rise to Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol’s status as legends in the hip-hop world. Check out our exclusive interview with him!
