Let’s face it—being a Queen is hard work. Although making it look easy is part of the job, it takes time, vision, and a whole lot of hustle in order to pull it off.
So when an event offers the chance to maintain your royal image, destress with positive energy, and connect with other Queens—it’s bound to be a golden opportunity. A celebratory regal affair aiming to do just that took over Studio 525 on Saturday, February 2nd in anticipation of HBO’s “2 Dope Queens” comedy special.
The Dope Beauty Bar was setup for selfies and photoshoots complete with a “2 Dope Queens” HBO backdrop as soon as you walk in and a photo booth in the back. In between panel discussions on black female entrepreneurship and wellness, DJ Olivia Pope ensured that the music complemented the upbeat, colorful vibe exuded by the venue’s décor. Stations for manicures, massages, facials, and eyebrow threading lined the perimeter of the event, and comfortable couches were setup for prime panel discussion viewing. Upon entering the Dope Beauty Bar, we helped ourselves to a mimosa and some of the ample shrimp and chicken hors d’oeurves being passed around in no time.
Even though getting wined, dined, and pampered is a blast, as every Queen knows, it takes a combination of book and street smarts to build and maintain an empire. Luckily, Jihan Thompson, Co-Founder of Swivel Beauty, and celebrity makeup artist, Camara Aunique were on deck to hand out some tips on how to keep the palace running smoothly.
Here were some of our favorite pieces of advice from the Dope Beauty Bar panel discussion:
- Networking is about who you know, but it’s also about not being afraid to tell other people about who you are. After all, you know what they say—closed mouths don’t get fed!
- Remember why you started and know your “why”. When times get tough, you’ve got to keep your motivation in mind.
- If you ever feel like you’re not getting support from others, make your own. Sometimes it might seem like people don’t believe in your vision, or you’re not getting the props you deserve. That’s OK—aim to pave your way despite the circumstances.
- Today’s the day! If you were waiting on a sign to get started on something, this is it. Decide that today is when you’re going to start whatever venture you’ve been waiting to pursue.
