From Diana Trout’s #bossgirl vibes and Charles’ handsome looks, you will definitely wish these two were your bosses since they are more than perfect on ‘Younger.’
The Knockturnal was able to sit down with the cast of Younger. Miriam Shor and Peter Hermann shared with us the wisdom of being a mother to some juicy secret of what’s to come in season 4. Read more of our exclusive interview here.
How do you deal with the height difference while filming?
Miriam: Well Sutton is also fifteen feet tall (laughs) so the rest of us have to wear heels.
Peter: We’re sort of like gazelles. There is a spectacular height differential that is in play at the beginning of season 4.
Miriam: We can’t say who but someone special is in the first episode.
Would you say you are relatable to your character in any way?
Miriam: I would say I’m incredibly different than Diana in terms of like how I chose to kind of go through the world. I also love books, so we both love that. But I don’t tend to be in control of things very much. I kind of flounder a little bit and I’m more comfortable in that world. I never wear jewelry, I don’t even wear a wedding ring (laughs). I could probably use a little more armor then I even wear and she feels very ready for battle. I have two kids that’s kind of where my life is. I admire her ambition and how she doesn’t apologize for being who she is or for doing what she does. I do feel like I apologize for taking up some space, which is kind of a female thing sometimes. In that way we are different and I admire her for that. But we both have brown hair.
Peter: I think that’s funny that you say that because I think there is so much of you in her and her in you. I agree with you that you are less armored than she is. I think as with all of us, there is a soft human underbelly and the game face we walk through with. I think it’s not a coincidence that this dynamic is so accessible to you and her.
Miriam: I am not a stranger to Peter. I am not a stranger to sometimes an excess of sort of thought and calculus that goes into the decision–which if it came from sort of war like in the belly region might be executed in the slightly simpler way. Even that sentence didn’t just have to be that (laughs). But I have to say it that way and even Charles would probably say that. That is why I have great affection for him because I identify with that. That’s fun to play, that’s fun to explore.
Will the big reveal be spilled to your characters in this season?
Miriam: It’s hard to say because we are rarely in on the secret until it happens, so I have not found out so far, I can say that.
Peter: We are always collectively amazed what they cook up in the writers room, so anything can happen.
Do you think the relationship between your character and Liza will brew into something more?
Peter: Into something more? Yes, it’s just the question of more what. More complicated, more impossible, more intimate, more open. That’s the beauty of the story.
Do you think your character will loosen up more this season?
Miriam: I do think Richard, her lover, does help pushes her off balance in a good way. Destabilizes her in a good way emotionally, but at the same time there are aspects of her that are always going to be there too. But I do think that she softens up a little bit.
Once the reveal happens, do you think Diana will feel sympathy towards Liza or the opposite?
Miriam: Here’s what I would like: I feel like yes, you could feel the wrath of Diana wing down on you, which I could see that being really scary. But at the same time, I would love if Diana already knew and figured it out. Because I do think that she is really intelligent and was accepting of whatever you have to do to get at the career you wanted, I think she would have respect for that. She would then move on. I would love her to have that reaction because a) I think it’s unexpected, everyone kind of expects veins to come out and if she was just like ‘I know how hard it is that’s how I got here,’ so whatever you had to do.
Peter: For both of our characters, I think that in terms of our marriages, there has been betrayal in the past. I think that it’s interesting how much that affects betrayal for the future.
Was Charles only attractive to Liza for her so called “youth” or is there something more to her?
Miriam: If you were just about a beautiful young woman, it’s not like Hillary Duff.. she’s been there. So obviously it’s something more.
Peter: I think that one of the aspects about Liza that is so compelling to Charles. I think there is something uncanny and unnameable that he can’t quite put his finger on. That in the greatest way doesn’t quite add up and someone who is wise beyond her years and he feels such kinship with, in a way, doesn’t quite make sense. It’s sort of so out there that it doesn’t enter into his thinking, but I think that there is such a deep attraction to this uncanny creature that she is. So it’s certainly not just about her age and I think the more confounding thing is in spite of her age. He is a very principle man.
Being that you are also a mother and play this powerful woman, do you have any advice for women in the same scenario?
Miriam: I don’t know about advice, but I just think in general, our society has to have more respect for mothers. I think something happens with people’s perception of a woman when she says she is a mother. That I’ve seen first hand. It’s fascinating and I don’t really understand what our bias is against mothers. Except that maybe we all have mommy issues (laughs) on some level and we’re working through them as a society, but it is shocking to me to see the lack of respect that people feel for women simply because they are mothers. In terms of what you can do, or advice you can give to a women, I would say just throw that judgement away and not let that judgement be your judgement.
Peter: Michael Chabon wrote a book called Manhood for Amateurs and he has an essay in there about how low the bar is for a man to register a great dad. He has this thing like a dad with a kid at a supermarket and everyone’s like ‘Oh my god,, this dad is so involved,’ and a mom at a supermarket with a kid just barely registers.
Miriam: I said to a friend of mine who is a new mom, recently ‘When you’re a mother you’re a superhero and by that I mean you save the world over and over again, but everyone’s perception of you is that you’re Clark Kent and get out of my way,’ so that’s true, but never forget you’re also the superhero and you need to save the world.
