Drag Me To Joanne’s: The Best Version of Dinner and a Show

The NYC Ballet, Lincoln Center, Juilliard, The Metropolitan Opera… what’s missing from this list of Upper West Side performing arts institutions?

Joanne Trattoria, of course! A classic New York style Italian spot that features lively drag performances on Wednesday evenings, Joanne Trattoria is truly a neighborhood gem. We stopped by the restaurant last week to see what all the buzz was about.

Joanne Trattoria is a family-owned restaurant, and it’s a family you might be familiar with: Lady Gaga’s parents are the owners! They serve traditional Italian fare, with a location perfect for stopping by if you’re heading to the ballet or another show nearby. As strong supporters of the arts, Joanne’s even hosts local performing artists most days of the week: Wednesday is Drag, Thursday is Cabaret, and Friday / Saturday feature musical acts. We love Drag, and had to come check out the restaurant on a Wednesday specifically.

Just as the drag show was about to start, we snuck in and sat at a table for two, quickly browsing their extensive menu while the performers began to set up. We settled on a shrimp scampi and seafood pappardelle. Both were summery and fresh, which is so necessary in this sweltering heat, and yet wholly satisfying in the way Italian food specifically provides. Of course, a cool, crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc did the trick to cut the richness of the food and start the party as the show kicked off!

Jupiter Genesis (@jupitergenesis) hosts the show, Drag Me To Joanne’s, every Wednesday at 7pm. This week’s guest was Jazmine (@isthatjazmine), and both Jupiter and Jazmine switched off dramatic performances, from classics like Gloria Estefan’s Conga and Mambo Italiano, to paying homage to the venue with a beloved Lady Gaga number, Bad Romance. The performances took place in increments, two at a time to give the artists time to rest between sets and the audience time to eat the delicious food prepared by Joanne Trattoria. Usually, the show takes place on their beautiful outdoor patio, but due to the heat we moved to the private room in the back of the restaurant – the audience was so close to the performers, which led to a fun, interactive show where we got to dance and sing with Jupiter and Jazmine.

We can’t wait to come back and see the show again outdoors, and maybe check out their Cabaret and other musical nights! You’ll want to book your reservation ASAP once you see their lineup of performers on the schedule. No idea how it wouldn’t, but in case that doesn’t convince you, one glance at the menu will definitely seal the deal.
