On a night filled with laughs, flashy lights, and delicious tacos, HBO Latino celebrated diverse and groundbreaking Latino talent by hosting a vibrant comedy show filled with Improv and Stand Up.
As we climbed up the stairs to HBO Latino’s Marquesina Sessions’ venue, the dark scene lit up with pops of color. The first room was lined with posters from HBO Latina’s many upcoming projects, featuring names like Julio Torres and Erik Rivera. Front and center, a flashy neon sign lit up the dark warehouse, giving off a very cool, LA vibe and paying tribute to the “Marquesinas” (Marquees), Latin movie theaters across the US and Latin America.
The next few rooms featured message boards asking guests to write about what they believed to be unique to Latino culture and what content they would like to see HBO Latino producing next. A “speed dating” meet and joke table with the Spanish Aqui Presents comedians (who later performed improv) allowed guests to get to know the comedians and have a one-on-one joke session.
The highlight of the night, the comedy show hosted by Erik Rivera, kicked off with HBO Latino’s Jessica Vargas introducing the event and explaining her passion for the work they’re doing. Spanish Aqui Presents did some hilarious improv based off trailers for HBO’s new seasons of shows like Insecure, Los Espookys, and more.
Stand Up was set into gear by host Erik Rivera, who joked about his children, his wife, and how his identity played a role in all of that. Following acts kept the audience rolling on the floor with laughter. After the show, guests were treated to an After Party with a delicious feast of tacos, churros, and more while enjoying photobooth setups, an open bar, and music by L.A Latinx DJs.
The night was a fun-filled celebration of Latino culture, featuring L.A.’s best and brightest Latino comedy scene.
