A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the public opening of the Voco Hotel’s rooftop bar in bustling Times Square.
When considering locations for opening a brand new rooftop in NYC, there’s no better and more high-traffic area than Times Square itself. Filled to the brim with constant foot-traffic and people looking to have a good time, securing a location in this area is essentially a guaranteed investment. This certainly seems to be the thought process of mogul Stathis Antonakopoulos, CEO of Carnegie Hospitality, as he unveiled the prime new spot this past Wednesday. However, despite the oft-kitsch description of Times Square venues, Voco aims to never sacrifice elegance, hospitality, and sincere enjoyment when serving customers.

I experienced this first hand when I got invited to the dazzling opening ceremony of the rooftop bar. People buzzed around, excitedly talking to their friends, waiters and waitresses swooping past with different hors d’oeuvres, the bartender crafting bubbling drinks, a live band played electric tunes. I stood by the edge of the roof space, putting my hands on the glass and peering down. This hotel was located right in the heart of Times Square on 48th street, and 33 stories below me I could see the glow of rapidly flickering billboards and the stream of pedestrians and cars. Easy to access was an understatement. The most eyes in any one place on Earth would be seeing the sign for the rooftop, and the constant stream of people was certain to make it an iconic nightlife location.

The food was astounding

I walked to the bar and perused the options, from which I settled for a Golden Hour Spritz, a concoction of elderflower St. Germain, ALB Vodka, prosecco, and yuzu. Light and refreshing, it was the perfect cocktail to sip while talking to people. I picked up some small bites as well and greatly enjoyed the quinoa mini quiches. The food was very good, and but a small sample of the full menu that will be available upon the roof’s public opening. The focus will be on easy to eat global-inspired dishes, including wagyu souvlaki skewers, ahi tuna with truffle ponzu, shrimp tempura, and beef tartare with ’nduja. It seems that while the food at rooftops are often an afterthought, the individuals behind Voco’s menu are taking a different approach, celebrating asian culture with dishes that have depth, intention, and of course, flavor.

We finally gathered around for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and after several speeches and shoutouts to notable individuals, the red ribbon was drawn across, a giant pair of golden scissors was procured, and the ribbon was cut. I had a great time hearing about the effort, direction, and goals of the many people that were a part of the rooftop’s conception, and seeing these people finally have the chance to experience the fruit of their hard work was amazing. They certainly deserved it. Voco Roofbar is opening soon, ready for the public’s enjoyment. Enjoy some delicious cocktails, or indulge in some wonderful food, or just spend time talking and chilling with friends: the venue welcomes all. Featuring a retractable roof, the space will be open year round, but be sure to experience it this summer for its sure-to-be stellar first year.
