Stahl reflected on four decades of the gala and the importance of continuing to raise awareness around reading and education. Her remarks set the tone for an evening centered on empowerment, resilience, and community.
One of the most moving moments came during a video highlighting Literacy Partners students and families. The film showed the real-life impact of literacy education and the challenges many families face. One message resonated throughout the room: “if parents can’t read children can’t be children.” The emotional clip helped guests better understand why Literacy Partners’ work remains so essential.
The evening also honored several leaders whose work reflects a commitment to education, storytelling, and service. Award-winning author Patricia Cornwell received the Lifetime Achievement Award and shared her belief in the power of reading to connect people across generations. She described literacy as a bridge between families and communities. She emphasized that the more people who can read, the more opportunities they have to succeed.
While the honorees inspired the crowd, one of the most unforgettable voices of the night belonged to Literacy Partners student Monica Bunay. Bunay delivered a deeply personal and heartfelt speech about her journey through the program. She spoke openly about learning, growth, and the ways literacy transformed her life. Her story extended beyond her own success. She shared how improved literacy skills strengthened opportunities for her children and created a brighter future for her family. By the time she finished speaking, the room rose to its feet for a long and well-deserved standing ovation.

Another memorable moment honored Sherrie Westin, President and CEO of Sesame Workshop, with the Champion of Literacy Award. As her accomplishments were celebrated, the audience learned about educational initiatives that brought learning opportunities to children in Afghanistan, especially young girls. The recognition also highlighted Operation Big Bird, the rescue effort that helped bring Sesame Workshop employees and their families home to safety. Yet even with such remarkable achievements attached to her name, Westin remained focused on the people around her. She repeatedly credited her team, a gesture that revealed both her humility and deep appreciation for those who worked alongside her.
As the evening continued, the energy shifted from reflection to celebration. Guests enthusiastically participated in the live auction led by Christopher Hanke. Paddle numbers quickly filled the air as attendees eagerly supported the organization’s mission. The excitement spread throughout the room, and donations came with little hesitation. Every bid represented another investment in literacy, education, and opportunity.
By the end of the night, Literacy Partners raised an impressive $1.3 million to support its life-changing programs. More importantly, the gala served as a reminder of what literacy makes possible. It opens doors, strengthens families, and creates opportunities that can last for generations. Literacy Partners continues to prove that when people gain the tools to read, write, and learn, entire communities benefit.
