This week’s episode of Fightland is easily my favorite of the season so far, largely because Kingsley finally gets the opportunity to remind everyone why his name carries so much weight, while Duke finds himself getting pulled deeper into a situation that is becoming increasingly difficult to control.
There is a constant feeling throughout the episode that everyone is making moves on the board at the same time, and considering there is an actual chessboard sitting in the middle of one of the episode’s most important conversations, I could not help but think about how much that image fits what is happening around Duke and the Marshall family.
Duke sure is not happy to see Kingsley, and the tension between the two is immediately noticeable when they come face to face. Kingsley explains that someone tried to kill him, while Duke makes it clear that his return is tied directly to his desire for revenge and everything that happened to his brother. Their conversation feels like two people who already understand exactly what the other is thinking, and the chessboard sitting nearby makes the scene even more interesting. Ever since the Power franchise, I have started paying attention whenever a chessboard shows up during a strategic conversation because it usually means someone is thinking several moves ahead, and Kingsley certainly seems to be doing that here.
Kingsley’s return also comes with a terrifying display of power as he has Langston killed and completely changes how he plans to operate, moving his business toward mercenaries while ordering the Russians to be wiped out, including Nikolai. The ambush from the tops of the buildings under construction is brutal, but what makes the sequence work is the message behind it, because Kingsley wants Joy to understand that he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the family, even if that means eliminating people who were previously considered valuable allies.
Meanwhile, Dazzer remains in the hospital, and Duke takes a moment to express how grateful he is for everything Dazzer taught him about fighting. There is something about the way Duke speaks to him that makes the scene feel like a possible goodbye, especially with only two episodes left in the season, and it adds another emotional layer to Duke’s increasingly personal quest for revenge.
Kim also survives her fall, which honestly raised one very important question for me: how the hell did she survive that? Depending on how high that apartment was, the fall should have been devastating, but somehow Kim makes it through and eventually goes to Duke for help. She reveals that she is undercover and explains that the police unit’s plan is to take down the Marshall family’s illegal drug operation. Her relationship with Duke continues to be one of the stronger parts of the episode, because there is a genuine sense of trust developing between them even though both are surrounded by secrets and competing agendas.
Joy also finds herself facing a major decision when Kingsley wants her to become the owner and majority stakeholder of Marshall Productions. Kingsley essentially walks back into the family situation and starts explaining everything that happened while he was gone as if he has returned to clean up a mess that everyone else allowed to grow out of control. Joy is understandably unsure about taking on that responsibility, especially when becoming the face of the company could make her an even bigger target.
By the end, Duke is trapped by Kingsley and ambushed by the press, leaving him with very few options and forcing him back into the ring. Honestly, I am glad because we need to see Duke fight again, especially after spending so much of the season watching him navigate strategy, revenge and family politics. The chessboard we saw earlier suddenly feels even more important because Duke has been trying to make his own moves, but Kingsley appears to have been planning several moves ahead.
With only two episodes left, Fightland has finally reached the point where every decision feels like it could completely change Duke’s future, and after this episode, I am very curious to see whether he can finally beat Kingsley at his own game.
