At Donoma Las Terrenas Resort & Villas, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection in the Dominican Republic, contemporary design meets laid-back beach-town living. Sculptural architecture, spacious villas, and lush tropical surroundings give the property a distinct sense of place, while the shoreline is just steps away.
The best part? You can spend your days moving between the beach, the pool, the spa, and the dinner table without giving much thought to what comes next. For anyone in need of a proper reset, that’s part of the appeal.
The Knockturnal recently checked in for a three-night stay hosted by Donoma. Nearly a year after opening, the resort is already hitting its stride—and making a compelling case for a later checkout.

Sweeping rooflines and crisp white facades give the property a distinctive profile, while warm wood accents and floor-to-ceiling glass soften the look. The result is a balance of modern sophistication and easygoing island living, setting the tone for a stay that feels as relaxed as it looks. Across the grounds, lush gardens and breezy courtyards break up the expansive layout. Despite its size, getting back to your room never feels like an expedition. With the beach just steps away, switching between a shaded retreat and the Caribbean shoreline takes little effort. Consider your out-of-office mode switched on.
That same sense of ease extends to the accommodations. The 94 rooms range from deluxe rooms and junior suites to one- through four-bedroom private villas. Interiors pair natural materials with regionally inspired artwork, while balconies and terraces open onto the surrounding greenery. Select junior suites offer an added perk—outdoor jacuzzis. The rain showers deserve a mention, too, with excellent water pressure making rinsing off after a day in the sun feel like its own little luxury.
The villas take things up a notch with private pools, fully equipped kitchens, and, in select units, spiral staircases. Whether traveling as a couple, family, or group of friends, guests have room to settle in and spread out. Best of all, everyone can gather without spending every waking minute together.

A comfortable room is one thing; thoughtful service is another. At Donoma, hospitality comes through in the little things: a friendly face, an easy conversation, or a casual check-in that feels sincere. The staff made guests feel looked after without making a production of it. It’s a subtle distinction, but one that makes a stay all the more enjoyable.
When it’s time to venture outside, Playa Las Ballenas is just steps away. With direct beach access, clear, shallow water, and complimentary towels on hand, going for a swim requires zero logistical planning. The calm shoreline is ideal for a leisurely dip, while the soft sand invites guests to stretch out and soak up the sunshine.
Three outdoor pools offer an alternative to the beach. Families can gravitate toward the dedicated children’s area where younger guests can play to their hearts’ content, while adults seeking a quieter space can claim a lounger at one of the other two. Whether you prefer a dip in the sea or an unhurried afternoon of lounging poolside, there’s a spot to suit your pace.

Eventually, even the most dedicated poolside lounger has to eat. Fortunately, Donoma makes getting out of the water well worth the effort. Solmarella, the resort’s open-air restaurant, pairs Italian staples with the bright, bold flavors of Japan, Mexico, and Peru, all filtered through a Mediterranean lens. The menu ranges from ceviches and fresh pastas to seafood risotto. By evening, it takes on a steakhouse bent, with charcoal-grilled cowboy steak and chicken alongside branzino and seasonal vegetables.
The charred octopus was the standout—remarkably tender and nearly good enough to steal the entire review. The espresso martini puts a Caribbean spin on the classic, replacing vodka with aged Dominican rum and combining it with coffee liqueur. For dessert, cheesecake topped with citrus compote and papaya pearls rests on a toasted almond base. Consider it a persuasive argument for saving room.
Dinner comes with a sea view at the beachfront bar and restaurant, where tacos and wood-fired pizzas pair with rolling waves and a canopy of stars. At Donoma, the evening can easily stretch into late-night drinks, and one espresso martini has a way of becoming two.

The resort’s more restorative side comes into focus at Arena Sense Spa, where four treatment suites offer massages, aromatherapy, body treatments, and facials featuring ingredients such as coconut, cacao, and sea salt. A sauna, steam room, and beauty salon round out the amenities, while the resort’s wellness programming includes sound baths, yoga and tai chi. The sound bath offered a welcome pause, with carefully modulated sounds and an unhurried pace encouraging participants to slow down and unwind. Rather than demanding active participation, the experience invited participants to settle in, let go, and simply be.
For those who prefer to recharge on the move, the 24-hour fitness center offers cardio equipment, weights, and indoor bikes. Get the endorphins flowing, then return to the considerably less strenuous pursuit of doing absolutely nothing. Balance, after all, comes in many forms.
At Donoma Las Terrenas Resort & Villas, the art of doing less becomes something of a luxury. Days unfold between the beach, the pool, and a table at Solmarella, with a spa treatment or an espresso martini providing an occasional change of pace. With considered design, thoughtful service, and plenty of ways to unwind, the resort makes a compelling case for a thoroughly well-spent escape. Checking out, as it turns out, is the hardest part.
