Dr. Martens celebrated the 65th anniversary of its iconic 1461 shoe with an intimate gathering at Bar Benjamin in West Hollywood on June 17, bringing together musicians, creatives, and tastemakers for an evening hosted by R&B singer-songwriter Destin Conrad.

The invite-only event honored one of the brand’s most iconic styles while highlighting the deep connection between Dr. Martens and music culture. First introduced in 1961, the 1461 shoe has evolved from durable workwear into a fashion staple embraced by artists and creatives across generations. Upon arrival, guests were welcomed into Bar Benjamin’s stylish and intimate setting, where cocktails, conversation, and music set the tone for the evening. The atmosphere felt more like a gathering of friends than a traditional brand event, a fitting setting for Conrad, whose longtime appreciation for the brand made the partnership feel especially authentic.

When asked why collaborating with Dr. Martens felt like a natural fit, Conrad explained that his relationship with the brand stretches back years.

“I’ve always loved Dr. Martens because they’re comfortable,” Conrad told The Knockturnal. “Partnering with them felt natural since I’ve been wearing them for years. They’re one of my staples that I can wear with anything.”

Guests were treated to a selection of bites throughout the evening, including hamachi crudo, chicken meatballs, sliders, and crispy fries. The beverage menu featured several custom cocktails inspired by both Conrad and the iconic 1461 shoe, including Destin’s Dirtier Martini made with gin, olives, and capers; Doc’s Margarita featuring blanco tequila, strawberry oleo, shiso, lime, and serrano pepper; and The 1461 Spritz, a refreshing blend of prosecco, yuzu, lemon, and mint. Red and white wine selections, along with beer offerings, were also available throughout the night. Paired with the intimate atmosphere, the menu helped create a relaxed environment where artists, creatives, and industry professionals could connect while celebrating the legacy of the brand.

The celebration attracted a notable mix of talent from across the music industry. Among those in attendance were Kehlani, Joyce Wrice, UMI, Channel Tres, Mack Keane, Noodles, and Conrad’s manager David Ali, who also represents Noodles and Kehlani. Their presence underscored the event’s blend of music, fashion, and creative culture while showing support for Conrad and Dr. Martens’ latest campaign surrounding the 1461 shoe.

Conrad’s authenticity has become one of the defining characteristics of his music, helping him cultivate a devoted fanbase. When asked why listeners continue to connect with his work, the singer pointed to one simple quality.

“I think it’s the honesty,” he said. “I’m just writing about my life and whatever I’m going through in that moment. People can see themselves in the stories I’m telling, and that’s what makes the connection feel real. It means a lot to me.”
That honesty has also shaped his creative growth. Reflecting on this chapter of his career, Conrad shared that learning to trust himself has made all the difference.”Some of my favorite music has come from trusting my instincts,” he said. “I’ve learned that I make my best work when I’m having fun and letting myself be curious.”

Throughout the night, guests explored displays celebrating the history and evolution of the 1461 shoe while showcasing their own Dr. Martens styles. Many attendees arrived sporting their favorite pairs, a testament to the versatility and relevance that have helped the silhouette remain popular for more than six decades.

As conversations flowed throughout the venue, the evening served as a reminder of the cultural impact the 1461 has maintained for more than six decades. Between appearances from influential artists, thoughtfully curated food and drinks, and a setting that encouraged genuine connection, Dr. Martens successfully celebrated not only a shoe but the creative community that has embraced it for generations. Guests departed with commemorative gift bags featuring custom 1461 candles and Dr. Martens-branded matches, a fitting keepsake from an evening dedicated to creativity, individuality, and one of fashion’s most enduring designs.

Before the evening concluded, Conrad also shared one artist who remains at the top of his collaboration wish list.

“Brandy,” he said without hesitation.

Given Conrad’s smooth R&B delivery and Brandy’s lasting influence on the genre, it’s a pairing many fans would undoubtedly welcome.

Sixty-five years after its debut, the 1461 remains a symbol of individuality and self-expression. The Los Angeles celebration demonstrated exactly why the shoe continues to resonate with new audiences while maintaining its place as one of fashion’s most recognizable and influential designs.
