Unilever’s Hair Expert, Ursula Stephens lead the TRESemmé hairstyling team backstage for Studio 189 SS20′ NYFW show. Studio 189’s collection titled “Heritage” was not only inspired by African clothing but also is made in Africa. The brands ss20′ runway show was a beautiful presentation of African culture mixed with high fashion.
Studio 189,co-founded by Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah received a lot of buzz around their brand this fashion season. For Studio 189’s Spring/Summer ’20 collection consisted of bright-colored, African prints, and intricate patchwork that paid homage to both founders African heritage.
Unilever’s hair expert and celebrity hairstylist, Ursula Stephens was the mastermind behind the creative hairstyles on Studio 189’s runway. Unlike most NYFW runway shows where every model has the same look model after model, Stephens did multiple hair looks. “After seeing the collection I didn’t want to just do technical braids or afros, I wanted to elevate everyone’s look. We had so many different natural textures, and I wanted to take a cultural look and take it to another level.” Stephens shared. Stephens described her upside-down braids with fringe as an “oxymoron.” Stephens also shared “There’s still a cultural take with the braids but also adding fringe bangs on natural hair. That’s how I wanted to show the elevation of a traditional and cultural look and just to have fun with it. This is all about taking a traditional style but bringing a high fashion feel to the front for something unexpected. People don’t realize you can have bangs with textured hair, too.
Majority of the models having textured hair was no feat for TRESemmé and their wide range of hair styling products. Stephens boasted about Moisture Rich Detangling Spray, TRESemmé’s Flawless Curls Mousse, Two Extra Hold Gel, and the TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Level 4: Extend to make sure everything stayed in place.
