Inspired loosely by events in his real life, ‘In Living Color’ star Marlon Wayans stars in the new NBC comedy focusing around keeping a family together.
The show follows a caring but immature dad named Marlon (played, of course, by Wayans) and the character’s ex-wife Ashley (Essence Atkins) as they attempt to co-parent their two kids, despite Ashley’s friend Yvette’s (Bresha Webb) protests.
“The show is basically a slice of my life,” Wayans said. “Even though you’re divorced, you’re still a family.”
Although the couple faces comedic mishaps along the way, such as Marlon’s misguided fatherly advice, unpredicted internet stardom, and Ashley’s new love life, they both know that family comes first and fight to keep their relationships together.
“A lot of couples break up and their family breaks up,” Wayans said. “In this situation, our family actually gets closer together being apart.”
The show may cover adult themes, such as relationships, sexuality, and race, but Wayans said it is still a show that is made for everyone.
“It’s funny, it’s edgy. Yet, it’s still a family show and it does have heart,” Wayans said.
