Take a look at the artwork of America’s inmates in an alternative art exhibition titled Escaping Time: Art from U.S. Prisons on view at Governors Island August 1 through September 27.
This unique show, curated by Anastasia Voron, focuses on the rehabilitative power of art for imprisoned men and women and includes over 200 artworks from prisons around the country. Additionally works from renowned painter Anthony Papa will be for sale and works attributed to Charles Manson will be on view. Papa, who was once imprisoned himself, will be the highlight of the show with a large selection of his work being available for purchase. His work has been collected by The Whitney Museum of American Art and he has been featured in many news sites and networks.
This show comments not only on the individual experience of prison life for each inmate but also on the national discussion led by President Obama on the need for prison reform. The show will touch on the therapeutic properties of art by featuring quotes and statistics proving its benefits along with videos of John Oliver and President Obama speaking about the need for prison reform. The show will be staffed by former inmates from Defy Ventures who will benefit from the exhibit along with the Safe Streets Arts Foundation and the inmate artists.
The show is on view weekends throughout August and September from 11am to 5pm at Governors Island, Nolan Park #6A.
