Adrian Alicea Brings His Mother’s Light to NYFW

The Designer's Spring/Summer 2027 collection, La Luz de Carmen, honors family, artistry, and the streets that raised him.

Adrian Alicea has made his name in boldness and drama that refuse to be confined by boundaries; his work moves freely between fashion and performance, romance and rebellion, past and present.

La Luz de Carmen, his Spring/Summer 2027 collection, was no exception, bringing a striking tribute to everything that has defined his creative vision: the Harlem ballrooms and downtown clubs, the decades and disciplines, and the Mother and nine sisters that shaped him long before the world knew his name. A romantic memoir, told in feathers and lace.

Actor Wilson Cruz opened the evening and set the sentimental tone before the first look hit the floor, speaking to the process behind Alicea’s designs: “He doesn’t sketch, he drapes straight onto the form… shaped by hands that grew up on New York hip hop and punk, on new wave and a little goth romance.” But the real inspiration guiding those hands, Cruz said, is much closer to home: “Adrian’s inspiration has always been his mother Carmen, and the nine sisters who raised him alongside her… tonight’s celebration is named for her, for Carmen. Every red you see is for her.”

The collection takes its name in homage to Alicea’s mother, whose essence, he says, is “etched into every design.” Though she is the foundation of his vision, the collection also tributes the many other sources of inspiration Alicea has found throughout his life, and the diverse cultures and communities that have defined his career.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, Alicea found his artistic identity amid New York’s cultural collisions. He immersed himself in the city’s ballroom and club scenes at 14, where fashion, performance, culture, and identity exist boundlessly in harmony. Actress Rae Daen Chong noticed the young artist one night in a downtown club, and soon brought him to Paris to walk a Thierry Mugler couture show.

This was the debut of a modeling career that landed Alicea on runways for Armani, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, and Hermés, walking alongside the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Iman. He later moved behind the seams, co-founding the label Nico & Adrian before launching his own eponymous line, which has since dressed celebrities including Zoe Saldaña and Daddy Yankee and appeared in Vogue Italia and Vogue Russia. Today, he is recognized as an award-winning designer and creative director who has never lost touch with his roots.

True to his art-driven approach, the collection’s presentation blurred the lines between fashion and performance by incorporating elements of ballet, voguing, hip-hop, and immersive theatre, unfolding as an eccentric, effervescent fashion experience. The show opened not with a look, but with a tribute to Alicea’s dance foundation.  Movement breathed life into the space, with dancers sporting streetwear and ballroom gear evoking the scenes that were fundamental in Alicea’s artistic development.

From there, the show swung dramatically between eras and moods; sheer black lace, cinched at the throat and finished with dramatic feathers brought Victorian-goth romance, while a liquid, snakeskin wrap dress brought pure old-Hollywood glamour. Color dazzled the room, with fuchsia feathers cascading one silhouette and a fire-engine red suit and fluid folly headdress dancing down the runway. Throughout were the feathers, florals, edge, sensuality, and unapologetic drama that have become unmistakably Alicea.

The collection resisted confinement to any single place, identity, expression, or time period- much like the artist behind it. Alicea, like all of us, is not defined artistically by a single experience or inspiration, but by the culmination of a rich artistic life. La Luz de Carmen does not honor a single place or moment in time, but the complex weaving that makes up a life.
