‘Decision to Leave’ Review: A Slight Sleight of Hand

by Dano Nissen October 18, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

Park Chan Wook is a magician.

With sleight of hand in every frame, he trains our eyes on what he wants us to see. The trickery goes down right in front of us. But we’re distracted.

His newest film “Decision to Leave” is billed by the director as a romantic comedy and detective drama. Even in describing its genre in that way, Park throws us for a loop. There’s so much Park wants us to see, expect and feel when something much different is going on.

The story goes: a detective investigates a man’s death from falling off a cliff. The wife is the prime suspect. She’s beautiful. She’s alluring. The detective can’t help but get emotionally involved with the woman he’s investigating.

It’s a classic noir set up that unravels in a not so classic way. It’s a movie that’s success relies on subverting what we’re accustomed to. We must be enraptured by Park’s magic.

“Decision to Leave” is not one of Park’s most magical films. Some of his misdirections are misdirected. Instead of sustaining the deception they snap us out of the illusion. There are long winded and downright goofy scenes.

It’s a fine film that any fan of noir or Park should enjoy. But after the six year wait from his last feature “The Handmaiden,” which is greatest work (arguable neck and neck with “Oldboy”), “Decision to Leave” is a bit of a let down. In the “The Handmaiden” we witnessed a totally engrossing performance from a master magician without a second diffusing the tension or withdrawing our intrigue at the mystery at hand. The same cannot be said for his latest effort.

fylí Hosts An Exclusive 4-day “Impact Driven” Milan Fashion Week Experience

by Olympia Dalley October 13, 2022
written by Olympia Dalley

From September 24th to the 27th, fylí hosted a small group of key investors and entrepreneurs to have an in-depth and exclusive look at Italy’s Diversity, Inclusion, and, Sustainability initiatives experience during Milan Fashion Week. The experience was curated by global culture visionary, advisor, and catalyst, Orietta Pelizzari, who personally saw guests through viewings of designer collections, meet-and-greets with showroom owners, catwalk presentations, and participation in D&I and Impact workshops. “Now more than ever, the Italian fashion industry is seeking more sustainable practices, greater diversity and inclusion, and impactful international relations,” explains Orietta Pelizzari. “This curated Milan Fashion Week experience is a huge leap in the right direction to support these initiatives.”

On day one, we hit the ground running with an introduction to Orietta Pelirazzi at the “Fashion Hub Market” at the ADI Museum. The entire ADI Museum had displays of upcoming designers, the KIA Designer Awards participant’s pieces, and help catwalk presentations.

Tiziano Guardini was the first presentation held at the ADI Museum. The Tiziano Guardini SS23 presentation was the perfect way to kick off all the excitement during the MFW experience. Guadini’s SS23  collection celebrated the 10th anniversary of the brand with gorgeous kimonos with prints and embroidery. The presentation was lively, and the limited edition pieces were worn by dancers who performed throughout the show.

Next up, on day one of fylí’s Milan Fashion Week experience, our group had the opportunity to view the winner of the CNMI Social Impact Award MFW22,  Ara Lumiere SS23 collection. Ara Lumiere is a collective of designers and gives voice to women who have survived acid attacks. The Hothur Foundation and Kulsum Shadab Wahab, titled this season’s collection “The Unbound,” celebrate the freedom of self-expression through art. While walking through the installation, a few survivors were on stage, hand-painting dresses displayed for the SS23 presentation.

We finished wrapped day one by attending the “The Power Words” Presentation. The Power of Words by Thalé Blanc is the brain child of Deb Sawaf. The concept came from the idea of having a positive impact an break down stigma surrounding mental health through fashion. Each piece in the collection has positive words that are meant to empower the person wearing them and the people reading them off the garment.

The Creative Collective NYC Presents CultureCon 2022

by Gabrielle Babson October 12, 2022
written by Gabrielle Babson

Creatives of color are changing the name of the game!

On October 8th, The Creative Collective NYC concluded their 2022 CultureCon Tour, with stops in Atlanta and Los Angeles and a final stop in Brooklyn, NY. Envisioned by Imani Ellis, founder of Culture Con and The Creative Collective NYC, the annual conference began in 2017 with a dream to create intentional spaces where young professionals of color could network with one another while celebrating the impact of diverse voices.

Presented by HBOMax, CultureCon welcomed hundreds of way-makers and several reputable visionaries within the industry to celebrate the culture of Black and POC creatives. Attendees were dressed to impress as they arrived at the Duggal Greenhouse for a full day of inspiration and shared opportunities. Several vendors were present and well integrated into the experience as well as an “Activation Alley” which included activations in partnership with companies such as Instagram, Linkedin, Audible, Toyota, and more.  Serving creatives of various disciplines, a range of panels took place as people were able to maneuver in and out of conversations while still feeling immersed in the conference. From music & entertainment to film & television to tech & influencer strategy, the list goes on— esteemed hosts, influential creators and celebrity talent you love to love were invited to share their knowledge. Topics ranged from black wealth and amplifying black voices to building brand awareness through social media and enhancing one’s social network. All of which provided incredible wisdom from the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Lena Waithe, Tracee Ellis Ross, Meagan Good, just to name a few.

Look out for more information on what The Creative Collective NYC has to offer as they continue to share Creative AF Careers which include job postings in conjunction with salary information and career tips, both on their site and on their social platforms. Stay tuned as they continue to curate the spaces needed to diversify the industry and propel their mission forward.

On The Scene: AMC Network’s Annual Summit

by Julian Cannon September 30, 2022
written by Julian Cannon

For the first time in three years, AMC Network hosted their annual summit in Brooklyn, NY.

At this conference, talent and network executives were invited to participate in moderated discussions centered on the legacy company’s content, its past, its present and its future, as well as to discuss the new and epic worlds coming to AMCN’s platforms, as well as introduce the next seminal characters, which will capture the hearts and minds of viewers.

As part of the event, AMC Networks’ President of Entertainment and AMC Studios, Dan McDermott (who hosted the event), was joined by cast and creatives from across AMC brands, including AMC, AMC+, Acorn TV, BBC America, Shudder, WE tv and ALLBLK. AMC Networks kicked off the morning by renewing Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire for a second season. The new series is expected to premiere on Sunday, October 2.

The first panel that took place was The World is a Dumpster Fire – Let’s Build New Ones moderated by Chris Hardwick. Scott Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead talked about several topics surrounding The Walking Dead’s universe. “With ‘The Walking Dead’… it’s a strange fantasy for the audience, that everything stops. That all of the things of society fall away and it’s just us with each other and we’re tested. We find out who we are. I think that was a weird fantasy that people dove into, to be tested that way and to look beyond this life. And I think they liked having those questions every week and they still do which is like ‘what would I do’. That certainly pulls you away from your everyday life.”

Gimple also went over the production changes over the years as the show has been filmed in digital since the third half of the tenth season. “Digital has been with us for a while. It’s only gotten better and better. It’s a huge part of production design, it’s a huge part of making that world,” said Gimple.

During the Love and Connection in the Black Community panel, the panelists that consisted of MC Lyte (‘Partners in Rhyme’), Da Brat (‘Brat Loves Judy’), David Shanks (‘61st St’), Colman Domingo (‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ ‘West Philly Baby’), Angela Simmons (‘Growing Up Hip Hop’), Diallo Riddle (‘Sherman’s Showcase’), Nikki Love (SVP, Development & Production, ALLBLK), they all talked about the importance of black and diverse talent that are on today’s landscape of television.

“Because the world would usually like to deny that part of ourselves, actually. So we need more love – we need to show accurate depictions and complex depictions of our families. It is our job as creators, as people who perform these roles, I think – it’s a responsibility we didn’t ask for but we have it,” said Colman Domingo on why it’s important to highlight this in TV and films.

Black people continue to struggle for quality roles on both the small and big screens, despite having won Academy Awards in acting, screenwriting, music production and other categories. “What we have here is a cast of people who are willing to do what’s right over what’s ‘sellable’ or ‘satiable,'” said MC Lyte on avoiding Black stereotypes. The topic of the next generation of Black queer content also came up as every panelist were passionate to talk about this since representation matters. “I think you have to be creative and I don’t know what that is- I mean, maybe it’s me and my wife having a baby. Whatever it is, I’m willing to show it so people can relate to it and understand what it’s about,” said Da Brat.

There were other great panels that took place such as Horror as a Safe Space, and AMCN’s Next Legacy Lineup Panel that I enjoyed too. It was a great event to not only mingle with the key executives of the AMC Network, but to also see them talk about the franchises that they are part of. The panels were not live streamed at the summit so you would have to be there in person to witness this.

On the Scene: Dîner en Blanc Celebrates 10th Anniversary

by Dano Nissen September 23, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

Dîner en Blanc is a dinner party done the white way.

Thousands dressed head to toe — and in some cases Venetian mask to roller skates — in all white, congregated in a secret location disclosed the day of the event. This year, marking its tenth anniversary, the dinner happened to return to its inaugural setting, outside the Brookfield Plaza on the Hudson River.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Knockturnal (@theknockturnal)

Dîner en Blanc-ers brought picnic baskets full of fine dining and headed over to the location from designated drop points in Manhattan to arrive around 7 pm. Some rocked ornate designs, while some kept it simple. But what remained constant — white, white, white.

The feast kicked off with a ceremonial wave of the napkin. Gazing upon the view of the Hudson River one could see a sea of fluttering white napkins. There was live music, dancing and performers in elaborate futuristic garb putting on a show for patrons. In the media lounge, celebrity guest chef Todd English prepared an array of delicacies, including babaganoush, lobster rolls with caviar and wagyu beef. Champagne Barons de Rothschild was the evening’s champagne sponsor and provided the alcoholic beverages in the lounge.

Coming off a two year Covid hiatus and commemorating the tenth anniversary made the night extra festive. For co-founder and president Sandy Safi, it made sense to bring the event back to whence it came. “We were looking for an iconic place in New York. And its the tenth anniversary,” she said. “New York is what started ever hitting globally. What better place to come back to come back to the place it all started. The first time we were here we were less than 1,000. Now we’re over 4,000. We’ve grown to 120 cities around the world. We built a global community of people who travel to city to city and love to do this.”

After taking two years off due to the pandemic Chef English was glad to come back for his fourth. “We realize we are gregarious animals and we need to go out and socialize,” he said of Diner en Blanc’s return. “I love Diner en Blanc, it’s a global organization that brings people of all walks of life and cultures together in a peaceful and celebratory manner, and exemplifies that food is our greatest democracy.”

On the Scene: ‘RRR’ Q & A with Director SS Rajamouli

by Dano Nissen September 22, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

R and R stands for rest and relaxation. RRR stands for anything but.

RRR (Rise, Roar, Revolt) is a three hour Telegu language epic about India’s fight for independence against the British, replete with over the top gun battles, spontaneous dance-offs, CG rendered wild animal attacks and no shortage of gratuitous TNT explosions.

The film is a sensation, standing at the third highest grossing film in India ever. It’s also found quite a bit of success overseas.

Director S.S. Rajamouli sat down for a Q & A after a screening of his film at the IFC Center in lower Manhattan. On whether he expected the film to be such a success across the globe, the director said, “Absolutely not. I never thought I’d appeal to the sensibilities of the West.” But the universal themes clearly tap in to a broad audience. He said, “Any creator will agree: a good story is a good story across the globe for any race, any language, for any people.”

Rajamouli wrote the film with his father, V. Vijayendra Prasad, another commercially successful Tollywood director. Rajamouli cut his teeth in film by working as an assistant in the editing room on his father’s films. Rajamouli said that his father spurred him on to make his latest film. “Initially I was doing nothing,” he said. “He was constantly nagging me.”

After relenting to his dad’s nagging, the next step in the creative process was forming the film’s iconic images. The film is full of striking images: a tandem shoulder riding gunfight, a flurry of disparate wild animals escaping from a cage, a man draped in an Indian flag as he barrels through a raging fire to save a little boy.

“The iconic images come first even before the story,” he said. He had the basic idea for the film down at the beginning: “Let’s get these two freedom fighters together. Initially they would be against each other, then they would come together against a common enemy. That was the basic line. Then it would come into discussion with my father. Then I look for iconic images for scenes. I tried to figure out what iconic images would tell this story and build the scene towards it.”

RRR is in theaters and available for streaming on Netflix.

Bring Back West 3rd Street is a Huge, Delectable Hit

by Jonathan Tolliver September 17, 2022
written by Jonathan Tolliver

Everyone needs their little corner of heaven. I found a new one in Beverly Hills just off 3rd and LaCienega. This once-bustling stretch was hit hard by the pandemic, but is surging back with an array of new businesses and fresh offerings from neighborhood staples.

This weekend you can try a ton of these spots at deep discounts via ‘Bring Back West 3rd Street,’ an event aimed at highlighting all the glorious food, fitness and fades this stretch has to offer.

I stopped by Chica’s, purveyor of excellent Mexican cuisine and the epicenter of this weekend’s event, for some shrimp tacos and a Paloma. Yes, it was 5pm! That’s a fine time to drink!

They’re offering 50% off for you and a friend this weekend, and 10% at any location FOREVER with a coupon, which you can pick up in the restaurant.

Ecco Un Poco served up the most exquisite peach gelato I’ve ever had. They have tons of adventurous and classic flavors, and are a perfect treat for these still-hot-as-hell dog days of summer.

They’re offering BOGO gelato in a cup, and a 10% discount on pints this weekend, and I can’t stress how worth it this deal is. Go ahead, live a little!

SeoulMates is my favorite restaurant name. They hold the title, sorry!

I had a free Bulgogi taco, which you can get with an order of $29 or more. Truly never had anything like this. It was crispy, succulent and sinewy. Could’ve had 10 more.

Melanie Wine Bar was a smash hit. I had a sommerlier’s dream Pinot Grigio, a simple yet dynamic taste of heaven. I decided to go hard in the paint and order a hanger steak. Good lord do I love hanger steak.

This was the best I’ve had. It’s bold, y’all. I was impressed with just how flavorful it was, a real delight at the tail end of my 3rd street sojourn.

They’re offering 50% off your dine-in check, so race on over this weekend and eat like a lord a leaping.

Thanks so much for having me, gang. And everyone run and check out these sensational spots before the weekend is through. Check out the full list of deals below!
