Osteria Accademia Combines Study Hall Flair with Italian Cuisine

by Kadeem Lundy December 5, 2022
written by Kadeem Lundy

In the midst of townhouses and storefront lofts in Manhattan’s Upper West Side sits a small new Italian eatery called Osteria Accademia. In Italy an “osteria” is a small restaurant that serves wine and a simple food menu. Accademias are places of education and learning with collections on display. In the case of Osteria Accademia the collections on display are books that are lined up on floor-to-ceiling stacks along the walls of the restaurant. Another key to the ambiance of the restaurant is the low lighting, with candles at every table.

At Osteria Accademia wine is indeed a specialty. Some of the main wines at the restaurant are Valle Reale, Occhipinti, Versante Nord Rosso and Scopetone red wines as well as Tramin, Feudo Montoni and Bisci white wines. Upon deciding to order the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes as the main course, I asked about which wine would complement the meat well and was advised the red wine Valle Reale would be best. The Valle Reale was smooth with fruity notes of berries like blueberries with hints of licorice. Before the main course was brought out a basket of crostini bread which consisted of toasted and untoasted pieces was brought to the table. The toasted crostini’s were crisp and had umami flavor of cheddar herb toast with hints of garlic and oregano. Also sampled was the oven fresh garlic bread which had a good buttery, garlic taste with each bite.

For the appetizer I tried one of the ravioli options from the pasta menu, ordering the Cacio E Pepe Ravioli. the ravioli has Parmigiano butter, and is topped with Black Winter Truffles. While the taste of truffles can sometimes be overpowering, the Parmigiano was the prominent flavor that stood out also lending to a creamy filling within the dish and the ravioli itself had the right amount of doneness and lightness. Although the dish was an appetizer it was quite filling.

When the main course the braised short ribs with mashed potatoes arrived, the potatoes were served with the short ribs on top, both covered in a red wine reduction sauce. The sauce was a contrast of sweet and savory. The Valle Reale wine that was sipped alongside the short ribs which are braised for eight hours helped bring out the savoriness in the short ribs while having similar flavor nods to the wine in the braising reduction sauce that was served with the meal. The short ribs were fork tender and the mashed potatoes were hearty and smooth without potato skins blended in.

Lastly for dessert I ordered two cannoli pastries. The crust was crisp and flaky while the ricotta filling seemed to have a citrus flavor which is also thanks to candied fruit slices within the cannolis.

The staff were also of great service. I was introduced to Rinor who shared some interesting details about the restaurant and menu offerings. He also pointed out that currently the restaurant is only open for dinner but will begin to expand to lunch, and brunch and delivery as the restaurant grows. The restaurant opens at 5pm each day and closes at 10pm or 10:30pm and it is recommended that reservations are made in advance as the restaurant only has indoor seating for less than 35 people, but they do offer a small outdoor seating area as well.

Although the restaurant has a library study hall setting, and would seem to cater to a quiet dining experience the experience is an warm environment to engage in chat while also learning about the importance of osterias and diversity within Italian cuisine.

Osteria Accademia is located at 646 Amsterdam Avenue in New York City.

The Root Reveals Their Annual The Root 100 List

by Kadeem Lundy December 2, 2022
written by Kadeem Lundy

The Root has unveiled its 13th annual Root 100 list. The list celebrates Black Americans between the ages of 24 and 74 who have played a major influential role during 2022 in shaping culture, entertainment, the arts, activism and politics, and business. This year’s list includes Shonda Rhimes, Solange Knowles, Dominique Morrisseau, Quinta Brunson, Mike Gauyo, and Michelle Obama who earned a spot at the top of the list. The Root Editor Vanessa K. De Luca explained that the media company determines the list “By using a unique algorithm, we calculate each honorees’ REACH — the people they touch through media along with Twitter, Instagram and TikTok followers — and their SUBSTANCE — the impact of their work, graded on a scale of 0 to 10 — to discern their INFLUENCE, which determines their ranking. Ultimately, we consider hundreds of candidates to compile the final The Root 100 list.”

Next week on December 8th, this year’s honorees will be celebrated at a gala to be held at New York City’s Apollo Theater. The usually private invite only gala which is open to the public to attend for the first time this year will feature performances from Naomi Raine, Sammus and Candice Hoyes, as well as special appearances by Questlove and Chloe Bailey. Loni Love will be on hand to serve as hostess of the event.

HOW BEAUTIFUL THOU ART: Art For Charity Event Brings Hope & Healing To Children

by Danielle Niecey November 29, 2022

Friday, November 18, 2022. Tribeca, New York — Less was more last Friday at the Spirit Showroom gallery, located in Tribeca, New York City’s leading art District for renowned and emerging Artists. The open floor layout held space for big names that came to support the “Art for Charity” event. All proceeds raised at the Art event are donated to the Mecca Shriners charity to provide first rate medical care and attention to children with Neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries, pediatric specialty care; to support cutting edge educational programs for their medical staff, extensive research for patient treatments and other special health care needs. Established in 1872 as the first Shrine Center in the United States, the Shriners organization supports 22 hospitals in 3 countries and acts as a health care system, under the name of Mecca Shriners Hospital, with locations across the continental U.S., Canada and Mexico. Profits raised at the event

are applied to assist the medical teams that aim to improve the lives of children treated in their hospitals, facilities and practices.

The Art Charity event opened its doors and welcomed in its guests who quietly poured their way into the exhibition. Those in attendance included figures from the art and editorial world such as Founder and Creative Director for Afropolitain Magazine, Nsayi Keziah Makoundou; Hollywood Fashion Editor & stylist, Yana Mandeville; Founder of ERA en Vogue, Angelica Eranović, Actor, Derek Hedlund and many other icons of the New York City nightlife, social media and social scene influencers. Choice wines and spirits donated by Bodvar wines were available to indulge.

Kazza Noble hosting the live Art Exhibit at The Art for Charity Event in Tribeca, New York

One of the most intriguing displays of the event was the opening presentation by famed Bronx-based artist, Kazza Noble. Attendees at the gallery engaged in his live, spontaneous and intuitively led oil paintings during its creation. Kazza began materializing his vision on a white canvas using variations of purple, violet and shades of lavender. He bled them together to fill the void of the canvas. The artist, while engaging with the curious eyed onlookers, began building on his inspiration, layering a gradient of colors and unfolding a sunrise between twin peaks, an image that took form before our eyes.

Artist Kazza Noble’s live painting exhibition in front of Kira Likhacheva, Angelica Eranović, and Yana Mandeville.

“You can bring them forward with brighter colors…” he spoke us through his process, all while answering questions from spectators, no matter how off-color or on target. He added white over the grays to form the presence of distant mountains; brown and burgundy for tree trunks and branches on the trees, “…two shades of greens,” he added, “…and put them anywhere you see fit.” At some point I was able to interact with the artist, at times second-guessing my next course of inspired action while I held the paintbrush. “Don’t be scared. There are no mistakes.” He motioned me to dip the tips of the brushes into any color. I chose pink, red and placed them on one of the trees. He said, “Nice… cherry blossoms.” The colors of my contribution now rest proudly on the buds of their branches, on a painting that was signed by yours truly, likely, other additional contributing artists, and of course, the legendary Kazza Noble.

Swimmer, 2019.  A brisk and vivid Acrylic and oil artpiece, 51 x 82 in by Alysha Marko

In the showroom gallery, the walls were dressed with an array of acrylics and oils on canvas portrait paintings by emerging art world figures. For one, Alysha Mako, NYC based Painter, Gallerist and owner of AMRM Gallery (located in Upper East Side New York), offered many of her pieces in support of the event. Of her highlighted installments were Boat Ride, 2022, a 36 x 48 in oil on canvas piece illustrated a candid scene amongst friends on an open lake; Swimmer, 2019, a brisk and vivid Acrylic and oil, 51 x 82 in canvas installment by Alysha Mako; depicted the underwater perspective of a competitive relay swimmer, thrusting a breaststroke between lane lines at the deep end of a pool; and Bunny?! 2021, a remarkable abstract Acrylic and oil on canvas, 48 x 48 in art piece whose colors are swept with strikingly bold brush strokes, distinctive in its styling from her other paintings that hung in plain view.

Blue Gorilla by Cuban-American Artist, Renelio Marlin

The creative fine art pieces of Cuban-American artist, Renelio Marlin, were also displayed to further enhance the space. The most striking of his portraits, Blue Gorilla, 2014, hung centered on the farthest wall from the entrance, eye-grabbing in its appearance across the showroom. A striking Blue Gorilla rests his chin on top of his closed knuckles (maybe examining his hands), leans into a side gaze. Its backdrop is smeared into what appears to be rinsing away of painted words with bright red paint, black and gold traced graffiti over hollowed figures with empty views. The unidentified, human audience appears as two ghostly hollow faces emerging to the right view of the art piece, with a few disfigured images clustered and drowning into the backdrop. A third face is depicted, emerging from behind the Blue Gorilla to its left, onlooking the Gorilla’s spectators.

Yana Mandeville and James Catherine Ford attending the Art for Charity for Mecca Shriners , Tribeca, New York

Renelio’s paintings expressed a full range of his artistry, from artistic development to distinction in artistic style. Other pieces of his featured work included famed portraits from his collections; a 60 x 72 in oil on canvas, entitled, Basic Nature of Existence, 2021, is an adventurous kaleidoscope of colors that shadow the outline of a human figure in its blend of paints; it also expresses the silhouette of the human figure, peering off into a sea of life. Tree Of Life, 2020, an oil on canvas 81 x 52 in abstract portrait painting, length height, showing off detail, time and concentration in its composition. Notable patterns in the art piece were the protruding bulbs of orange and red orbs, spun together like a small strand of DNA in the top left corner; and the striking illuminated tower, the tree, piercing through the backdrop, midway point of the canvas.

Guests gather around featured Artist Juan Lazaro piece while enjoying choice Bovard wines

Various paintings of bicycles were showcased by artist Juan Lazaro using Acrylic and pen on cardboard. The largest of the canvased cycles, hung on a 42 x 82 in display, the Super Tricycle, 2020, shows the tricycle etched with pen and accented with blue, red, white and yellow acrylic on a vibrant yellow backdrop, its simplicity balanced the visual complexities found in the complimentary pieces by the other artists on display.

(Left to right) Anthony Schembry, Kandance Cornell, Florent Firmin, Zach Van Ysseldyk (holding #21 of the Mini Mojo Collection by Idriss B), Aweng Chuol, and Jordan Russo

Florent Firmin and Anthony Schembry, the organizers of the event, capped off the evening with a raffle to win a special edition sculpture made from world renowned French-Tunisian artist Idriss B. Idriss B’s 3-D NFT art inspired figurines were sprinkled across glass shelves alongside the bar side walls of the showroom. The composition of each figure’s build mimicked the way they would appear in the digital dimension with geometric space.  In the middle of the show room, a silver gorilla, the 21st installment piece of the 50 Mini Mojo Art Collection, sat protected on display in an autographed neon green cubed casing for raffle bidding. Guests studied the piece with admiration, speaking of its seamless design, taking in the carefully crafted edges and celebrating its immaculate presentation on display.

Zach Van Ysseldyk became the winner of the raffle receiving #21 of 50 Mini Mojo Limited Edition of The Art Collection by Idriss B. from International Supermodel Aweng Chuol.

The organizers of the event closed the evening with the raffle pulled by the stunning South Sudanese Australian and world famous super model Aweng Chuol. Aweng’s latest fashion campaign can currently be seen throughout billboards across all of New York City. The lucky Zach Van Ysseldyk became the winner of the raffle receiving the #21 on his prized ticket. Aweng presented the glee-filled recipient with the 21st installment of the Limited Edition pieces from The 50 Mini Mojo Art Collection by Idriss B.  IdrissB’s works of larger than life animals are prominently featured up and down Park Ave in the heart of Manhattan, New York between 34th St and 38 St. The organizers of the event thanked all the guests for attending and informed them of future “Art for Charity” events to come.

How to Climb a Skyscraper Like Thor: ‘Limitless with Chris Hemsworth’

by Dano Nissen November 28, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

Whether you’re Chris Hemsworth or a journalist for the Knockturnal we all get stressed out.

Spiders, taxes, birthday party planning and heights are amongst the top stressors. The last of which, got Chris Hemsworth and me sweating bullets.

National Geographic organized members of the media to scale Hudson Yards skyscraper with City Climb to promote their show “Limitless with Chris Hemsworth.” We strapped into a harness and up we went.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Knockturnal (@theknockturnal)

Dr. Module Akinola prepped us for the high altitude, high stress trek. Hemsworth also got the spiel. She appears in the first episode of the series to equip the “Thor” star with valuable de-stressing tools before he walks atop a Sydney skyscraper.

In the episode, and at Hudson Yards, she explained the box breathing method. Imagine a box. Start at one corner. Inhale for four seconds. On to the next corner. Hold your breath for four seconds. Next corner. Exhale for four seconds. Last corner. Hold for seconds. Repeat.

I did the exercise, as did Hemsworth, and made my way up. The piece de resistance was leaning over the edge of the skyscraper, stretching myself over all of New York City with two straps and a harness preventing me from plummeting hundreds of feet. Flouting the conventional wisdom of “don’t look down,” I indeed stared down at all the ant-size people walking around lower Manhattan.

Akinola, an Associate Professor at the Columbia Business School,  spoke to The Knockturnal about her experience working with Hemsworth and National Geographic on the series as well as practical tips we can all use in our daily lives to calm down. One of the big takeaways from the interview, the episode and the series writ large is we all experience stress. As we do aging, death, illness, physical strain etc. You can be a Marvel superhero from Asgard and still face human challenges like the rest of us. The key is not to dread these as ailments, but to accept them as inevitable parts of humanity and learn to confront them.

On the Scene: ‘Limitless with Chris Hemsworth’ Tackles Death

by Dano Nissen November 23, 2022
written by Dano Nissen

It starts with the end.

National Geographic’s “Limitless with Chris Hemsworth” aired its sixth and final episode at the Jazz at the Lincoln Center premiere on Nov 15.

The show, which is available for streaming on Disney +, puts Hemsworth through physical trials — from high wire walks to ice plunges. The last episode, however, gives the “Thor” actor a trial of a more metaphysical nature.

The title is “Acceptance.” Hemsworth spends three days in a retirement community preparing for death. It’s a meditative episode to close out the stunt-filled series.

“I lost both my parents this year,” said series creator Darren Aronofsky at the post-screening panel. “As I was losing my mom, I watched it on the couch with my dad next door to my mom as she was passing. Half way through I paused and asked, ‘Is this ok?’ Because there’s a lot of heavy shit going on. He was like, ‘Yeah, keep it going.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Knockturnal (@theknockturnal)

Aronofsky said watching the cut of the final episode was “extremely helpful” for him in coping with the deaths of his parents.

Along with “Limitless,” Aronofsky has been promoting his film “The Whale,” which premiered to plaudits at TIFF. It too deals with grief and family.

Hemsworth had family on his mind after the final episode. “It made me think about my family in a more intense way and my kids,” he said. “And not taking anything for granted.”

His big takeaway from making the series is to live in the present. “It’s the narrative in the past and the future that can scare us and become overwhelming,” he said.

An interactive reception followed the screening and panel. Attendees could take pictures in front of a green screen, strap on VR helmets to get a taste of the high octane thrills and take a seat in zero gravity chairs. The event kicked off with a man grappling down a rope from a cable car on the ceiling.

All six episodes are available for streaming on Disney +.

Johnny Cocoa, Texas Hip Hop Artist releases New Single “Free Bird”

by Gabrielle Babson November 19, 2022
written by Gabrielle Babson

We had the pleasure of speaking with Texas Hip Hop artist Johnny Cocoa to discuss his journey in music as he released one of his latest singles “Free Bird.” Produced by Tago, the track imagines a liberated world where folks fully embrace free-spirited nature to go after what’s theirs for the taking. Through his smooth lyricism and captivating flow, Johnny emphasizes the power in breaking free from the confinements of our mind and a hustle hard mentality.  The single serves as a follow up to the Beaumont artist’s recently released spiritual single, “On God” which has accumulated over 1.9M views to date. As we discussed his career, Johnny gave us an inside look on how his music has transformed him, where he draws inspiration and how he hopes to influence as he progresses in his career.

Q: Describe the transition in your music from when you first began to now.

Johnny: The most prevalent change was through my spiritual journey. I took my spiritual journey to new heights and that played a major role in my transition. On “Thuggin’ By My Lonely” I was coming from a place of pain and up until now I am more wise and clear of mind.

Q: Who are some artists that have inspired the work you have created and will create moving forward?

Johnny: RUSS, Smino, James Brown, Ray Charles, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Drake, SZA, Schoolboy Q, the list goes on.

Q: What impact do you hope to have on the culture of music?

Johnny: I definitely hope to have persuasive power to create more unity and love within the culture. Personally, as a black man, I hope to inspire love within the black community.

Q: What is one thing you wish someone had told you prior to pursuing a career in this industry?

Johnny: I wish somebody would have told me about politics and how important relationships are because I am naturally introverted. Breaking out of my shell was tricky in the beginning but it was fun and it was part of the journey. I took it head on like I do everything. I would tell them just to be present in the journey because every step is very important, every relationship is invaluable. Everything about the journey is imperative. It’s very important to stay present because without the present there is no future.

The southern artist has caught the attention and public support of music and pop culture icons such as Drake and Kanye West who have recognized his adept cross-genre fusion of hip-hop, R&B and tones of reggae. Beyond the recognition, Johnny is driven by his passion to tell stories through his music and positively influence those around him through his artistry.

Johnny’s continuous stream of singles and projects over the years culminated in his debut project To The World in 2021. Throughout the project, he showcases his versatility as an artist, delivering bars and fan favorites “Thuggin’ By My Lonely” and “Man in the Mirror.” The project also features the popular song, “Letters from Itachi” – inspired by one of the recording artist’s favorite anime shows, Naruto. Be sure to follow the works of Johnny Cocoa as his latest album “I AM WHO I AM” is out now on all streaming platforms!
