The Knockturnal had the privilege of attending the premiere of Somebody I Used to Know at The Culver Theater. The movie was co-written by married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, who each occupied additional roles in this production. Franco directed while Brie acted as the lead, Ally.

Franco and Brie have undeniable chemistry that not only allows them to flourish while working together, but inspires their cast to enjoy working with one another as well. Repeatedly, the red carpet attendees emphasized that Franco and Brie cultivated the most desirable workplace environment in which each actor felt comfortable enough to be themselves. Danny Pudi (Benny) and Alison Brie’s (Ally) characters are friends in the movie, and it is heartwarming to see their bond on screen as audiences have fallen in love with their dynamic on the sitcom, Community. The actors were filled with joy and pride as they headed in to see their movie for the first time. Franco and Brie spoke before the audience to thank Amazon studios and the cast and crew for their hard work. In this speech, Brie sweetly expressed her overwhelming love for Franco as her partner in life and work.

The story follows Alison Brie (Ally) on a weekend trip to her hometown. The trip was instigated by Ally losing the show she spent years working on as a show-runner in LA. While sitting in a bar in her hometown, she runs into her ex Sean, played by Jay Ellis. Ally and Sean spend an evening together reminiscing about the relationship they shared prior to Ally moving to LA. Throughout the evening, there are implications that their relationship may have ended prematurely. What Ally does not know at the time of their reunion is that Sean is getting married to Cassidy, played by Kiersey Clemonst, that same weekend. When Sean’s family hears that Ally is in town, they invite her to be a part of the wedding celebrations. Sean contemplates his life decisions as he witnesses his ex and his soon to be bride interact throughout the weekend. Ally wonders what could have been, and if she made the right decision moving to LA. The movie perfectly portrays the emotional turbulence and triumph of making life decisions in your twenties. Franco told the Knockturnal that he hopes audiences learn that it is never too late to pivot from the original plan – whether it be in relationships, careers, or otherwise. Somebody I Used to Know is a refreshingly feel-good modern romantic comedy with a lovely cast on and off screen. Audiences can see Somebody I Used to Know on Prime Video February 10th!
