In “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now,” Broadway stars Marissa Jaret Winokur, Kerry Butler and Laura Bell Bundy reminisce on their careers, friendships and personal lives in a cabaret full of zany moments and heartfelt reflection.
The trio became friends when they were all cast in Broadway’s “Hairspray,” which opened in 2002. Winokur played protagonist Tracy Turnblad, Butler played Tracy’s best friend, Penny Pingelton, and Bundy played Tracy’s bully, Amber Von Tussle. Since rehearsals for the production began, the women have enjoyed over 20 years of friendship. “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now” is a celebration of their extensive careers and impressive accomplishments.
Throughout the show, the three sing iconic tunes from their time on Broadway. Bundy reminisces on her show-stopping performance as Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde” with “So Much Better,” belting the song’s iconic final note. Winokur leads the ensemble with an energetic rendition of “I Can Hear the Bells,” from “Hairspray” — reminding audiences that her Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical was well deserved. Butler sings many songs referencing her impressive Broadway career, including “Somewhere That’s Green” from “Little Shop of Horrors.”
Their friendship is the center of the production, as they all cheer one another on during their individual performances. They work together to serve hilarious moments, including a music mashup detailing their childhoods, which includes well-known songs like “Shy” from “Once Upon a Mattress” and “Colors of the Wind” from Disney’s “Pocahontas.”
Winokur, Butler and Bundy balance comedy with moments of emotional vulnerability. During the show, the stars open up about their complicated and fulfilling journeys with motherhood. All three have unique stories about parenting, as Winokur had her son via surrogate, Butler adopted her daughters and Bundy had her son through IVF. By sharing their experiences, they affirm that all parenting experiences are valid and special in their own way.
“Mama I’m a Big Girl Now” is 90 minutes of pure fun, and is sure to capture the hearts of Broadway fans.
