The longest-continuous Latinx performing company is announcing its 50th anniversary, which includes the world premieres of a new, original works.
Repertorio Español Off-Broadway holds a special place in New York’s theatre history, being the oldest company that performs plays in Spanish. As the works are performed, they are simultaneously translated into English via individual simultext. The theater presents 15 different works annually, totaling in 300 performances to over 40,000 viewers. This 2017-2018 season marks the 50th anniversary of the company, and this season’s roster demonstrates Repertorio Español’s dedication to diversity.
Some of the plays that will be performed this season include Valor, Agravio y Mujer (Courage, Betrayal and a Woman) by Ana Caro, El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba (No One Writes to the Colonel) by Gabriel García Márquez, and Exquista Agonía (Exquisite Agony) by Nilo Cruz. The latter two will have their world premieres at Repertorio Español.
“Through these various works, we honor past traditions and add to the rich tapestry of New York theater,” said Repertorio Español’s Executive Director Robert Federico.
The first show of the season, Valor, Agravio y Mujer (Courage, Betrayal and a Woman), will begin previews on October 27 and will run until May 10. The theater is located at 138 E. 27 St.
