Is he, or is he not, a superhero?
The new Amazon original series, The Tick, is a story of a blue bug superhero and his nervous, apprehensive human sidekick, Arthur—a rendition of the 2001 TV series by the same title and creator. Creator Ben Edlund, who designed the cartoon back in 1986, joined forces with Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures to bring a grand scale action comedy for Prime users, to be released on August 25th.
The Tick is a spoof of the typical comic book hero. He’s lost memory of his past for reasons yet unveiled, and finds solace in Arthur, a rather paranoid, but regular guy accountant who refuses and refuses to his archetypal call to action. Arthur is so doubtful of himself he initially suspects The Tick to be one of his superhero hallucinations, until his sister, Dot, confirms that she can in fact see him too. What finally convinces Arthur to help The Tick take down evil is his own traumatic encounter with a mysterious villain, The Terror, who killed his father “in front of his little boy face.” The Tick and Arthur make a pact: if the superhero helps Arthur defeat The Terror, he will help The Tick uncover his past.
The “blue carpet” premiere for the upcoming series took place last night at the East Village Cinema, where the cast of the series such as Peter Serafinowicz (The Tick), Griffin Newman (Arthur), Valorie Curry (Dot) joined the evening with family and friends. Stars such as Katie Holmes, Michael Cerveris, and Chanel Iman also attracted massive attention as they beamed faces at the blue carpet in support of their friends and the anticipated series. A really fun party followed at Industria Studios.
