Summer solstice is defined as the solstice that marks the onset of summer, at the time of the longest day.
Yoga is the best way to pay homage to the sun. With doing Surya namaskars, also known as sun salutations, it is the human body and minds way of recognizing and appreciating the most powerful force on earth.
Life Time Athletic at the Sky’s rooftop garden was the perfect way to find zen in the midst of the concrete jungle that surrounded it. We focused on breathing, posture, and balance with the calming tunes of Trevor Hall and other artists who so beautifully complimented this evening and its practice.
After an hour of downward dog, variations of the crow guided by the talented yogis, it was time to mingle by the rooftop pool and sip on some surya inspired cocktails. The cocktails were refreshing and tasty, with ingredients that are known to cleanse and replenish your system such as mint leaves and Kombucha.
This went great with the guac and chips that were being offered as everyone posed in front of a marigold flower representation of “love”. The marigold is associated with the sun, another perfect element that was dedicated to summer solstice. The flower being vibrant yellow and gold in color perfectly symbolizes the fiery star in our sky. Similar to other flowers, it opens when the sun is out, however, it looks more like it than others giving its name “herb of the sun”, representing passion and even creativity.
Thus, this evening was in perfect balance with yoga as a practice encouraging love, harmony, and togetherness as your mind, body, and soul align. In a company of marigolds, food, and sweetly infused drinks this was a respectful, peaceful way to welcome the summer this year.
