Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is home to 18-year-old rapper Kierra Luv, whose music career was kickstarted after she auditioned for Lifetime’s The Rap Game. Although she wasn’t cast, trying out for the show motivated Kierra to record and post her freestyles regularly which led to a large and growing fanbase on social media. Don’t sleep on this talented artist who’s sure to be a household name in no time.
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us about how auditioning for Lifetime’s The Rap Game helped kickstart your career?
Kierra Luv: Basically when I did try to audition for the show, that’s what got me into free-styling at first. I just wanted to see if I could get on the show I never really thought about being a rapper or anything, just wanted to see if I could do it. Even though it didn’t work out it still helped me grow my fanbase, so it was still a win.
The Knockturnal: How large was your social media following when you auditioned and how quickly did it grow?
Kierra Luv: When I auditioned, probably 2,000 followers. It honestly wasn’t that quick at first, I would also promote my freestyles and put them on promo pages and not everyone would like it. It was just me taking feedback and me learning at the beginning.
The Knockturnal: What was your following like when Cardi B reposted your “Money” freestyle?
Kierra Luv: I was at 80k and I was really shooting for 100k so I posted this video and then WorldStar and everyone started picking it up. When WorldStar posted I got to 300k and then when Cardi posted it I got to literally 1.4 (million followers).
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about the positive female role models who’ve helped shape your life?
Kierra Luv: Moms, I think everyone’s mom is a hero. With everybody’s mom making a way even when there’s no way, that’s what I always think about.
The Knockturnal: For artists who are still developing how important is it to promote content on promo pages like SayCheeseTV or OurGenerationMusic?
Kierra Luv: That’s how my videos started SayCheese had posted it and then it went to WorldStar, blogs like SayCheese and WorldStar help a lot.
The Knockturnal: How does it feel to be signed to Elliot Grainge and 10k Projects/Electric Feel Entertainment and have artists like Trippie Redd on the same roster who’ve also been grinding from a young age?
Kierra Luv: Honestly that’s one of the things that made me most comfortable with signing with him because like you said, Trippie started young, what Elliott does is he takes young artists and I like that. It’s definitely a big motivation and inspiration and a big comfortability.
The Knockturnal: Since going viral who have you been most excited to hear from?
Kierra Luv: Honestly it’s weird because I have a top 5.
The Knockturnal: Tell us your top 5!
Kierra Luv: My Top 5 are A Boogie, Chance The Rapper, Joyner Lucas, and a couple of other people and literally A Boogie, Chance The Rapper, ASAP, and all of them reached out and I was like, ‘what the hell y’all are literally my top 5.’
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming debut project, Take it or Leave it?
Kierra Luv: It’s coming out soon and I know everybody else is waiting, but I’m waiting as well so I be really eager to get it all out.
The Knockturnal: How has the COVID-19 Quarantine affected your creative process?
Kierra Luv: Now I had to invest in a home studio. I’ve got a lot of tracks I’m ready to lay down.
