Digital Brilliance: Navigating the Bright Moments Art Collection

by Veronika Collins July 28, 2023
written by Veronika Collins

On July 25th, 2023, Gotham, New York City’s first legalized cannabis and cultural concept store, collaborated with Bright Moments Digital Art Gallery, hosting an interactive event of digital art and experiencing the culture celebrated at Gotham. Gotham is located in a prime trendy area of the city, right between Soho and the iconic St. Marys Street. Gotham has two floors; the bottom is its cannabis and retail area, and the top is where the art gallery resides. I had quite the experience, so I am excited to share my journey with you all.

When I first heard of digital art and NFTs, it left a big question mark in my head: What exactly is it? NFTs have been trending and created for the past year and have been thriving ever since. NFTs are an outlet where artists, based on the faith of probability based on an algorithm, that technology will create beautiful digital pieces, easily shared on your phone and through the digital atmosphere. Now you may ask, “How does that work? How can technology create art?” Well, you’re in for a treat, because I have the answers. The artist Jimena Buena Vida’s collection is particularly intriguing because of the digital platform media she uses to create these vibrant pieces of artwork. Jimena Buena Vida is a Latino abstract artist who merges from computer science with modern art. Vida’s goal is to push the limits of traditional art and add a twist. She uses technology to allow the NFT’s algorithm to randomly choose based on probability, to create its unique piece. Each piece of art that appears on the digital screen or is sent to your coin-based digital wallet isn’t the same. They are all one-of-a-kind unique pieces. Jimena Buena Vida calls this collection “Epiphanies”. Vida’s collection aims to celebrate the unknown; these creations unlock different dimensions of possibility, chance, and the aspect of existence. Vida’s inspiration for this occurred in the post-pandemic world. Everything that we once knew has changed. How we adapt to the constantly advancing technology is our choice. I think it’s beautiful and very interesting to test the limits of modern art and technology. It’s quite a controversial conversation and topic, but the more research and experience I have myself with, these open my eyes to a whole new world.

Below are some sample pieces of Jimena Buena Vida’s pieces, they can be found on the Bright Moments Art Gallery on their website bright moments.io for more information. As stated above, Bright Moments is a digital art gallery that started in California, in Venice Beach, and is now in NYC inside of Gotham NYC. Gotham NYC offers a wide variety of cannabis items, such as THC and CBD, gummies, pre-rolls, and more. Gotham also offers fashion and lifestyle brands and is a great space to chill out and interact with the staff and crew and leave feeling “high on life” and relaxed. They offer so many varieties of self-soothing substances with top quality and natural ingredients. I am looking forward to indulging myself. The staff was so friendly and offered me so many things to try. I’m looking forward to coming back.

I had the chance to create my own NFT piece of art through this technology Vida uses. It happened within a minute, a blink of my eye, and I have my own NFT digital art on my phone. It can be transferred and sold through cryptocurrency, or I can cherish it on my phone for special eyes to view. NFT and the Art world are still going to have a bunch of controversy of “what is it” “how does it work” and if it’s trying to replace “organic” art, but I believe it’s a more accessible and transformative type of artwork. It doesn’t take away “organic” artwork but offers a more instant and expansive creativity. Congratulations to Jimena Buena Vida and her amazing collections, I learned so much about both these brands and the NFT Art world.

Museum of Arts and Design Hosts Private Tours of “Taylor Swift: Storyteller”

by Britt Trachtenberg July 27, 2023
written by Britt Trachtenberg

On July 18 and 20, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) gave private tours of Taylor Swift: Storyteller. The exhibition displayed artifacts from Swift’s career. Barbara Tober, Chair Emerita hosted the event. Tim Rodgers and director Nanette L. Laitman assisted with the event. The museum’s Resident Swiftie, Kat Sloan Garcia, led the tour through the gallery.

Garcia started with a humorous introduction. She asked how many attendees knew about Swift. Many group members raised their hands. A few visitors considered themselves Swifties and even superfans. Comedically, one patron said that they had never heard of Swift. Garcia gave a brief introduction to the musician.

For two decades, Swift has written music. She released ten original albums and three re-recorded albums. Fans of her work referred to each album as a different “era.” The exhibit showed Swift’s progression throughout these eras, which included sonic and aesthetic shifts.

“You can almost consider each era as a ‘character,’” said Garcia. She started with the exhibit’s center display case.

It contained artifacts from her ten original albums. First, the museum displayed a blue dress from her self-titled record. BCBG Max Azria designed the custom garment, while Liberty designed the matching custom boots. Swift wore the outfit on her Soul2Soul tour performance on November 7, 2007. Garcia provided more insight into this album.

Swift was sixteen when the country album was released. Garcia described interesting facts about this release. She said, “When it was released, no young women were releasing country music.” This solidified Swift as a trailblazer from her career’s start. Garcia detailed Swift’s songwriting process.

Swift wrote much of her own music. Early in her career, she received help from co-writers, such as Liz Rose. Then, Garcia spoke about the next item in the display case.

On the cover of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” Swift wore a beige Fernanda Blouse. Brooklyn-based designer Ulla Johnson created the shirt. Originally, Swift released the album in 2008. Hits included “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me.” In 2021, she re-released “Fearless.” Garcia explained the bold move.

As a teenager, Swift signed a record deal for six albums. She released her sixth record and attempted to renegotiate with the label. The parties could not agree and Swift left the label. Unfortunately, this label still owned the album’s master recordings. “She decided to re-record the records so that she could own them,” said Garcia. Then, she spoke about an artifact from the Speak Now era.

Roberto Cavalli designed the golden beaded fringe dress. On the “Speak Now” World Tour 2011-2012, Swift wore the item while singing “Sparks Fly,” “Mine,” and “The Story of Us.” She paired it with a red electric Gibson guitar. While touring in Asia and Europe, she performed in the garment while singing “Back to December” and “Better Than Revenge.” In the “Red” era, Swift wore an iconic outfit as well.

Ashish designed the top, which read “Not A Lot Going On At The Moment.” Bloch provided the dance shoes. Swift paired the items with shorts and a hat for the “22” music video (2013). Garcia made a connection to one of Swift’s recent outfits.

“It’s been recreated for her current tour— the Eras tour— to say “A Lot Going On At The Moment,” said Garcia.

In the “1989” era, Swift wore a dazzling teal jumpsuit. Jessica Jones designed the custom costume, while Stuart Weitzman designed the boots. Swift wore the ensemble for “Shake It Off” performances during the “1989” World Tour (2015). Garcia noted the album’s significance in popular culture.

Swift released the album in 2014. “It marks her transition into pop music. It won album of the year at the Grammys,” explained Garcia. She cited the hit single “Never, Ever Getting Back Together.” The next artifact came from the “Reputation” era.

Jessica Jones designed the glittery, black jumpsuit with a hood. Christian Louboutin created the matching boots. Swift wore the outfit for the “Ready for It?, I Did Something Bad,” “Gorgeous,” and “Style / Love Story / You Belong With Me” medley performances in the “Reputation” World Tour (2018). Garcia commented on this era as well.

Prior, Swift released an album every two years in October. During the “1989” era, she became a global pop star. The public scrutinized her professional and personal lives. “She actually disappeared for a full year,” said Garcia. Swift reentered society with the “Reputation” album. The reinvention developed into a smash hit. Then, Garcia discussed an artifact from the “Lover” era.

Versace designed the pastel jacket, top, and shorts. Christian Louboutin created the boots. Swift wore the ensemble for the “Lover” and “You Need To Calm Down” performances at the MTV Music Awards. The show occurred in Newark, New Jersey on August 26, 2019. The display case contained artifacts from the “Evermore” era as well.

On the “Evermore” cover, Swift wore a brown-and-orange plaid wool coat. Stella McCartney designed the jacket. Garcia mentioned this fact’s significance. For the first time, Swift wore a non-custom-made outfit. Fans found the garment and similar styles on store shelves. Garcia described the characteristics of this era.

The songs sound more quiet with a more indie style. It coincides with the sister era, “Folklore.” Initially, Swift did not tour for these albums. However, she incorporated some songs into her ongoing “Eras” tour. The right-hand case had outfits from re-recorded album eras.

In the “I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version)” music video (2021), Swift wore extravagant red costumes. Coofandy designed the crimson band jacket, while Christian Louboutin created the shoes. Swift wore custom-made pants and a hat. The video featured another gorgeous outfit as well.

In the same video, Swift wore a stunning red ball gown with a hoop skirt. Nicole + Felicia Couture designed the gown. Swift paired the piece with a crimson microphone. To its left, the museum displayed an outfit from the initial “Red” era.

Marina Toybina created the custom black lace dress. Also, they provided the grand piano. Swift utilized the materials for “All Too Well” performances in the “Red” tour (2013-2014). The same case showed an outfit from her latest era too.

Michael Schmidt Studios designed the custom outfit. Swift wore the unique costume for the “Bejeweled” music video (2022). Courtesy of the aforementioned studios, the gallery displayed a behind-the-scenes video. It revealed how the production team created the official music video.

Next to the museum’s grand staircase, a screen displayed other music videos on a loop. First, it showed “You Need to Calm Down” (2019). Second, it presented “Lover” (2019). Drew Kirsch and Swift directed both music videos. Swift directed the rest of the screened videos.

The museum showed “Cardigan” (2020) and “Willow” (2020). “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2021) appeared stunningly. Sadie Sink, Dylan O’Brien, and Swift starred in the production. Recent music videos played as well.

The exhibition showed “Anti-Hero” (2022) and “Bejeweled” (2022). The “Lavender Haze” (2023) video displayed elegance. The exhibition featured stunning decor.

A neon sign stretched across the grand staircase. In a fuscia script, it read “Taylor Swift.” A guitar separated her first and last name.

Next to the elevator, a wall explained Swift’s connection to feminism. It said that she “discussed the pressures that women musicians feel to constantly transform their public images.” The wall pointed out, “the broad array of characters she plays in her music videos and performances may also be seen as a commentary on female archetypes.” The wall illustrated Swift’s storytelling abilities with similar wanderlust.

It said, “Swift has built distinctive worlds through both her songwriting and her meticulously crafted videos and live performances.” The wall described the stories as “eminently relatable to her legions of fans.”

Near the center cases, pink lights projected onto the floor. They read “Love, Taylor.” The R stretched into a gorgeous heart.

The exhibit displayed two lyric walls. A portion of the song “All Too Well” was painted on a wall parallel to the elevator. An excerpt from “Tim Graw” was painted on a wall opposite the right-hand case. It had cross-outs to look more authentic. After the tour, the museum treated guests to lunch on the seventh floor.

The first course consisted of a garden market green salad. It had kiwis, mixed berries, Marcona almonds, watermelon radishes, and champagne vinaigrette. The second course tasted delectable too.

The Scottish salmon came with English peas, red lentils, and peri-peri aioli. The dessert had a decadent flavor.

The peach tart had vanilla Greek yogurt, almond brittle, and a lavender haze. Servers offered wines too.

The list consisted of Domaine des Verchères Chardonnay, Mâcon-Villages Burgundy (2021), and Marques de Riscal Reserva Rioja (2018). Guests can easily access the Taylor Swift: Storyteller exhibition.

Guests can find it on the museum’s second floor. Attendees can access it from the grand staircase or the elevator. MAD will display the artifacts until September 4.

It was during the time when Mick Foley, Seth Rollins, and Johnny Gargano were out on stage that Green interrupted Rollins while he was chatting about his own action figure that he interrupted Rollins. Eventually, she joined the panel for the remainder of the discussion, and Mick Foley expressed his praise for her role as one of WWE’s current champions for her accomplishments.

Furthermore, as part of the panel, Rollins discussed his feelings as the new World Heavyweight Champion as well as how he wants that title to be viewed similarly to the WWE Championship in terms of positioning. Mattel also revealed its new lineup of WWE action figures that will be released in the coming months into next year.

Ford’s Vegas Bronco Off-Roadeo Experience is a Playground for Car Enthusiasts

by Ishan Wankavala July 16, 2023
written by Ishan Wankavala

Raptor Country

It’s almost a foreign concept nowadays: a company offering free bonuses beyond the scope of a purchase. Ford decided to go completely against the grain in a very pro-consumer move: giving every purchaser of a new Ford Bronco SUV the opportunity to take one from their private fleet into the wilderness, and learn the ins, outs, and nitty gritty about their new machine in an adventurous crash-course (with no crashes, hopefully!) before they begin going wild with their own vehicle. This exciting  prospect was already available in three locations: New Hampshire, Utah, and Texas, and the opening of their Las Vegas location would mark the fourth.

The Bronco Off-Roadeo, Raptor Edition

This new ranch is different in one fundamental aspect, however; it is the only one specifically built for the new Ford Bronco Raptor trim level, which is the bigger, badder, and even more Bronco brother. In an incredible fairytale moment, I was given the amazing opportunity to fly out to Vegas and experience the Bronco Raptor first-hand, in its natural habitat.

Pre-Event Dinner

After flying out to Las Vegas, I was given the first opportunity to interact with individuals from Ford. In a dinner arranged within my hotel itself, I got the chance to speak to individuals who were spearheading the program and others who were alongside me, invited to experience the program, over food and drinks. I spoke to Dawn McKenzie,  Ford Truck Communications Manager, as she outlined what was in store for us the next day. “You guys are absolutely going to love it,” she gushed. “I can’t wait until you try out the training course. The jumps and drift areas are absolutely bonkers…”
“Jumps?!” I gasped. The scope of this course had been completely unknown to me, and I, probably the only invitee there that had never driven an off-road vehicle, started making peace with the fact that this would be absolutely beyond anything I had ever done before.

Entering the Park

The morning of the event itself, I woke up at 5:30 AM to make my 6:30 AM hotel checkout on time. The group was already waiting in the lobby, looking red-eyed but talking excitedly. We boarded three shuttles that would transport us to the Mt. Potosi region, where Ford had set up its camp. After a 45 minute scenic drive through deserts and mountains, we arrived at the ranch. A large wooden gate loomed out from over the hill, donning the word “BRONCO”, in a very Jurassic Park-esque moment.

The main lodge of the Off-Roadeo

Our shuttle passed through, and began a steep climb to the top of a hill that had a small modern cabin nestled between two rocky cliffs. An actual Bronco was situated in the front, positioned above several rocks with its suspension stretched to make it seem endlessly frozen in an action shot, and the cabin itself had more Bronco and Raptor logos. It was all very well built, with a modern-rustic style to the cabin that looked like it had all of the modern facilities, but also simultaneously that we were a step further away from the rest of the world (in a desolate theme park for trucks). It was all very invigorating.

The Prep

I entered the cabin, and was treated to the check-in/waiver process, a nice breakfast, and other small gifts and goodies. Before I could tackle breakfast (I was absolutely starving at this point), I received my helmet and got assigned a locker. The helmet would be used for the more intense lap runs, in which head protection would be absolutely vital. After I stuffed all my things into the locker, I picked up my complimentary thermos water bottle and Bronco stickers, and sat down for a nice breakfast burrito and coffee. Meanwhile, we got a quick rundown of the program, the vehicle, and the wonderful employees that made this all possible.

The Bronco

Outside, we received an overview of the Bronco, and how the Raptor variant compares to the base model. Essentially, every aspect of the Bronco was finely tuned to make any off-road terrain seem much more conquerable.

A close-up of the Bronco Raptor’s fenders and excellent suspension system

Ford started with a “go-anywhere” mindset with the vehicle, which meant they specifically developed it to take any obstacle head-on, should the driver desire it so. The suspension, front and rear bumpers, and chassis of the vehicle are all formulated to be extremely forgiving; able to take a hit anywhere while protecting its passengers. Enormous springs ensure a stabilized ride on any type of ground, and the ability to disconnect the front stabilizer bar meant even extremely large obstacles could be driven over. There is also a focus on the ride customization, with two main selectors: first, the G.O.A.T. mode selector, which stands for Goes Over Any Type of Terrain, allows the user to select what kind of terrain they would be driving over, with options including off-road, baja, sport, and rock crawl.

The Ford Bronco Raptor, courtesy of Ford

There are also Hero switches, which allow more minute-by-minute control for specific aspects of the car, such as the ability to lock the front or rear differential when necessary. All of these options, along with the Raptor’s four-seat capacity, means that a family can choose any destination, and head straight there, as the crow flies.

Squad Mode

With precursory talks out of the way, we all headed to the fleet of Broncos. Each person would be driving their own, and I selected a flaming orange one because that’s just the kind of person I am. Each vehicle was equipped with a walkie-talkie, and we split up into groups of four vehicles. One of the vehicles in each group was piloted by an employee from the ranch, and they would be leading the pack and communicating to the others through the walkie. After some further safety checks, we hit the road.

Hitting the Trail

My group of four vehicles entered the trail heading straight into the Nevada wilderness. It was a bit jarring at first, since we were driving over rough terrain that contained all manner of rocks, trenches, and boulders, but the vehicles excellent suspensions took on the brunt of the movement. I knew that if I was driving there in my car, my neck would have already snapped. We slowly followed the Bronco in front of us through the land, over hills and into pits, and got a feel for the Bronco’s handling and the way it could take on virtually any obstacle.

On the trail

There were several times when I thought, “No way I can clear that rock”, but the vehicle took it on like a champ. It truly felt dauntless.

Buddy System

Our leader explained to us the Bronco Buddy system, in which we could keep track of all of the people in our squad and not leave anyone behind. Whenever we reached an intersection, it was our job to wait there until we were sure the vehicle behind us had seen which turn we had made, and in that way, each vehicle would be accounted for. Our lead also had frequent breaks in which he asked for the status of each driver on the walkie, and would only proceed once he got the thumbs up from each driver. It was a very safety-first system, and it really spoke to how well thought-out everything was. We were having fun, but it was not at the expense of our wellbeing.

Quarry Run

We finally reached the site of the ORX Training Courses, and got into position. Ford had enlisted the help of several professional off-roaders, from trainers to actual racers that offloaded for a living, to help us first timers get accommodated and ready to take on the courses. The first was a small rocky run that had twisting turns and rough straights. I sat as a passenger first, while my driver explained to me her thought process for each turn and straight she tackled. She first switched the G.O.A.T. mode dial from off-road to baja, and then stepped on the pedal. It was absolutely exhilarating watching not only take the course with speed, but also anticipate each turn, make minute adjustments to steering, braking, and speed, and be able to explain all of it before it even happened.

The writer of this article, in my Bronco

Seeing her do it with such ease made me more confident in my ability, but it was futile; sitting behind the wheel was absolutely different than watching from the side, and I couldn’t have gone more than a quarter of the speed that she went. My steering slipped several times, and images of my hurtling off the course and over a cliff flashed through my mind, but she helped me keep my composure from the passenger seat, and kept giving clear directions even when I made the wrong turn. It definitely was a great learning experience.

The Man and his Dirt

For the second course, I would be running a course that was wider, more varied in elevation, and had more obstacles. Here I saw the legendary jump that was mentioned earlier, as well as a sand pit and a winding sloped gulch area. Once again, my driver accompaniment drove masterfully, performing the jump with ease, turning the wheel quickly from side to side to prevent the tires from getting stuck in the silt, and drifted the vehicle around the slope, with the back end sliding out, before gaining traction once more and pressing for speed. When it was my turn, I was a little embarrassed with my lack of skill, but my driver laughed it off and said I was doing no worse than any of the other drivers he had witnessed that day.

The Return

After the courses and a quick bathroom break, we headed back on the off-road trail, making our way back to the ranch. Our lead driver communicated less on the walkie this time, as we had already gained enough exposure to the trail the first time, and only spoke to us to excitedly point out some wild burros that he spotted roaming the plains.

A Moment of Reflection

Back at the ranch, we received a lunch, and some final words from the team. As I listened, I couldn’t help but put myself in the shoes of someone who would be sitting in my very seat in the future, when the ranch is finally open to the public. The fact that an individual would be here after having just purchased a new Bronco, and would be about to find out exactly what their new vehicle could do, was enthralling. Ford is one of the best auto manufacturers when it comes to community engagement and programs, and the Off-Roadeo is a testament to that. While not serving any immediate monetary benefit, Ford gains the goodwill from their customers, bolsters their name, and creates life-long partnerships that will only benefit them in the long run. Heck, even I want a Bronco now. Someone who has already purchased one will only further solidify their choice in choosing Ford for anything that will touch both road and dirt.

The Bronco Off-Roadeo will be open to the public very soon, and I encourage any new Bronco owner in the area to book this wonderful opportunity very soon.

Beignets and Bootays: Essence Fest 2023 Brought The Heat To New Orleans

by Chantell Hayden July 13, 2023
written by Chantell Hayden

The NOAA Climate Forecast System predicted this year’s Fourth of July as a record breaking “hottest day” ever. While global warming could very well be the reason for this, we think it was just the residual heat from Megan thee Stallions performance at Essence Fest.

The annual Essence Festival was back in its home of New Orleans for another full weekend of fun events, performances and panels and more. Now, every year at Essence Fest is a good time but this year being the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop made it extra special. And the sweltering heat was no match for this year’s star-studded lineup.

Jill Scott, Monica, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, Jagged Edge, Jermaine Dupri, Big Boi, Ludacris, Ice Cube, Slick Rick and Janelle Monae are only a few of the artists that graced the stage at The Caesars Superdome Friday and Saturday night.

Friday night’s headliner Lauryn Hill killed her performance, despite her tardiness. The Grammy-nominated songstress stylishly strolled on stage adorned in an all-black fit with a massive pleated, ruffle top and showed us why she is and will always be one of the most defining musicians of our time. Fellow Fugees member and long-time collaborator Wyclef Jean also joined the star on stage. Comedian and actor Deon Cole kept the good vibes going through in between performances as the host for the night.

Saturday night brought even more energy. Missy Elliot gave a show-stopping performance with a nostalgic medley of her award-winning catalogue.

Hosted by Abbot Elementary star Janelle James with sounds by the legendary DJ Spinderella, Sunday night’s concert included performances from several artists like Remy Ma, Salt-N-Pepa, Mia X, Eve, Angie Martinez and Megan Thee Stallion to help commemorate Hip-Hop 50. Rapper and New Orleans finest Lil Wayne surprised fans with an impromptu but, nonetheless, epic performance.

Wizkid and Tems brought Nigeria to New Orleans and linked up to perform 2022’s song of the summer “Essence.”

But Big Boi, Ludacris and Megan Thee Stallion took the cake (no pun intended) for our favorite performances from the weekend.

Big Boi had everyone on their feet as he rapped along to his iconic OutKast hit “The Way You Move” in his standard long, fur coat. Ludacris gave us hit after hit like “Move Bitch” and brought out Lil Jon for their 2000 collaboration “Bia Bia.”

And last but certainly not least, Sunday night the Houston Hottie Megan Thee Stallion had every cheek in Caesars Superdome shaking while dozens of fans joined her on stage for an iconic twerk battle.

Tons of events and panels took place, some simultaneously, at The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center where dozens of vendors from fashion to beauty were housed for the weekend. Guests could purchase from their favorite black owned businesses all under one roof.

Popular beauty and lifestyle company BeautyCon made their return to the beauty scene after a four-year hiatus and with a new owner — Essence Ventures, LLC. BeautyCon is an annual event made to highlight new trendy products in the industry, with the help of makeup influencers, celebrities and fans. It’s safe to say the company is in good hands as they plan to introduce a whole new BeautyCon experience for everyone to enjoy very soon.

What better way to make a comeback than at one of the largest festivals in the U.S.? Guests were able to stop by the BeautyCon booth and listen to singer Coco Jones and Shea Moisture President of Beauty & Wellbeing Cara Robinson Sabin recall their experiences in the beauty industry as black women.

Oprah Winfrey, Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks all came together for a special conversation surrounding the legacy of the 1985 coming-of-age film The Color Purple. Winfrey, Henson and Brooks all play a major role in the upcoming reboot of the film set to release later this year on Christmas Day.

Vice President Kamala Harris even joined the fun as she spoke on a panel for a conversation on the fight for reproductive freedom and the socioeconomic development of the black community alongside Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen.

Other panel speakers included Dominique Fishback, Tyler James Williams, Michelle Williams, YoYo, Roxanne Shanté, Jacob Latimore and Kim Whitley.
