Hot Wheels Knows How to Give the Whole Family a Monster Good Time

by Ishan Wankavala October 7, 2023
written by Ishan Wankavala

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks were a classic staple of my childhood. I mean, what five-year-old boy doesn’t have even the smallest desire to throw his meaty little paws around a toy truck of doom named Boneshaker or Gunkster? These toys dominated my early years, and it was absolutely fantastic to still see how profound an impact the same brand had on today’s children. As I walked into Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn for the Hot Wheels: Monster Trucks Live Glow Party event, all I could see were little kids streaming past me with their families, thrilled to see their favorite toys come to life. It was a magical moment.

Taking a seat, I took a minute to marvel at the way the arena had been decorated. I had been at Barclays before for several concerts, but now, it had been completely transformed to include the wide-open space needed to drive several gas-guzzling behemoths. The Hot Wheels iconic branding was draped all around the walls, and there was a massive set of screens hanging from the ceiling that would allow for a closeup on the action no matter what. What was really stealing all attention, however, was the stack of dilapidated vehicles arranged on the ground. This might have perplexed some, but everyone in the audience knew: by the end of the night, these cars would be a remnant of what we were currently seeing. The show was about to begin.

The performances were astounding. Sure, I was a bit old for some of the crowd interactions (like when all the kids were asked to get up and dance like their life depended on it, and every five-year-old around me burst into their favorite Fortnite dance), but seeing the trucks themselves was a joy. They were loud, abrasive, and pure machines of destruction. I was able to see Mega Wrex, a dinosaur-themed truck, Tiger Shark, which looked like a tiger but had a shark fin, Boneshaker, which was made up of old boneyard parts, and others. Each truck had its own story and own quirks, and each took turns competing in a series of challenges that would be scored and ranked. For instance, one of the first was a bid for the best wheelie that could be performed by the trucks, on top of the bed of cars. What followed was a glorious cacophony of crunching steel and deep, screaming engines. I felt giddy.

After several more fun competitions such as best burnout and longest airtime, we were in for a treat for the “halftime show”, which I could never had anticipated. A giant box with wheels slowly rolled into the arena amidst heavy rock music and a huge applause from the audience. I watched as the top opened up like some Transformer, and a metal dinosaur, complete with evil eyes and a razor-sharp grin, unfolded out. The screens everywhere were emblazoned with its name: MEGASAURUS. It picked up an old car, and completely bit it in half. The kids around me were jumping out of their seats maniacally as pieces of old sedan dropped from the mouth of the ferocious beast. Even their parents had giant smiles plastered on their faces as it breathed a burst of fire.

After that show-stopping interjection, I was eager to see whether the next act would top it. When I saw workers rolling out a giant ramp, I knew I was in for a delight. Suddenly, I was witnessing several thrillchasers launching themselves on dirt bikes into the air, and landing on a giant inflatable pad. I was starstruck. As I watched, the motocross team circled back and relaunched, performing flips and aerial stunts that seemed to defy gravity. I was suddenly a kid again again amongst kids, and my attention was glued.

I was left walking out of Barclays Center wondering at what point in my life I had turned into such a boring adult. Reflecting on ancient times when Hot Wheels and Thomas the Tank Engine were the peak concerns I had in life, I came to realize that this night had helped me step back, albeit only for a couple of hours or so, into my older, smaller shoes. The fact that some force managed to achieve that is no small feat, and if one is able to experience this Monster Truck show from Hot Wheels even once and manage to unlock a memory from a small pocket of their childhood, I will consider that a win.

Hot Wheels: Monster Trucks Live Glow Party is currently touring the U.S, and is 100% a can’t-miss event.

Our Favorite Moments from REVOLT World 2023

by Chantell Hayden October 3, 2023
written by Chantell Hayden

Previously ‘REVOLT Summit,’ REVOLT World kicked off in Atlanta Sep. 22-24 for another successful year brimming with entertainment, vibrant performances, food, workshops and panels.

This year entailed a stage for live tapings of popular REVOLT podcasts like The Jason Lee Show, Caresha Please, and Black Girl Stuff, and a “We Are Hip Hop” theme to celebrate hip-hop’s cultural impact worldwide.

“REVOLT WORLD was created to celebrate the global impact of hip hop and introduce a new live event category that represents the highest level of entertainment, education, and opportunity,” said Combs. “Our vision was to build on the tremendous success of REVOLT Summit and deliver a first-of-its-kind event that reimagined the intersection of culture, community, and connections with the most influential leaders across generations.”

The weekend featured a star-studded lineup including Don Toliver, Mr. Eazi, Uncle Waffles, Diddy, REVOLT CEO Detavio Samuels, Yung Miami, Juvenile, Babyface Ray, Jemele Hill, Spice, Uncle Luke, Lauren London, Joey BADA$$, Tyler Leplay, Sha’Carri Richardson and more.

Yung Miami’s “Caresha Please” Live with Guest Ari Fletcher

This was a long-awaited union that fans have been begging for and it finally became a reality at REVOLT World. All bets were off and no question was left unanswered as Yung Miami wasted no time delving into the world of Ari, widely recognized as ‘TheRealKyleSister’ across the internet. The lively exchange brought laughter, liquor and they engaged in both light-hearted moments and thoughtful discussions. Also, a kiss may or may not have occurred between the two during their sit down.

The interview didn’t reveal any groundbreaking information but it was entertaining to watch two friends sit back, have some drinks and catch up. Nonetheless, Caresha Please gave the audience everything they needed.

Juvenile, Mannie Fresh and Uncle Luke

Maybe it was the sudden drop in temperature as we transition to fall or maybe everyone had a long day but the crowd definitely did not reciprocate the energy that these three legends were giving us. Their careers started decades ago and they’re still able to get on stage and perform with the stamina of a Siberian Husky and amazing breath control while still remembering the lyrics their decades long catalog. They put a lot of today’s new artists to shame.

The one’s who understood the assignment rapped along to the 90s and 2000s southern hits like “I Need a Hot Girl,” “Slow Motion” and “I Wanna Rock.”

The Love Lounge

We know REVOLT is his brainchild but transforming an entire building in to a red-light district where his new The Love Album: Off The Grid plays on repeat over and over Is about the most Diddy thing that Diddy could do. This marks his fifth studio album and surpasses his 2010 release, “Last Train To Paris,” as his best work of art. The album boasts an all-star lineup, featuring a diverse group of artists, including Summer Walker, his latest Love Records label signee, Jozzy, as well as Justin Bieber and Busta Rhymes.

When entering the building, footage on the back wall appeared to depict Diddy’s journey during the album’s creation. Yung Miami in the video riding alongside Diddy with the convertible top down on a long road. Plush velvet sofas were scattered throughout the room, where guests lounged and enjoyed themed cocktails while listening to the album played.

Sex dungeon set-up aside, The Love Album Listening Experience was a nice vibe and an enjoyable break from the Atlanta heat.

Meditation in The Woods

We absolutely loved the tranquil space created by REVOLT, True Voice and wellness expert Alex Kaufmann. Situated by a lake with huge REVOLT World-branded inflatable balls floating across it, the cozy area designated for wellness check-ins and guided meditations was a necessary and thoughtful detail.

Everyday People

The weekend concluded with an explosive finale from Every Day People, a popular event company known for promising diversity, community and good music and that’s exactly what they delivered. The stage featured performances by Dancehall artist Byron Messiah, Mr. Eazi, and DJ Uncle Waffles, capping off the fantastic weekend.

The New York Latino Film Festival Opening Night ft. Story Ave

by Micaela Verrelien October 3, 2023
written by Micaela Verrelien

Every year The New York Latino Film Festival curates a special line up of versatile films in honor of celebrating culture and of course the love of film. This year the festival happens to fall on the same month as Hispanic Heritage month, which makes it a double celebration.

The NYLFF kicked off the celebration with the award winning film “Story Ave” directed by Aristotle Torres. “Story Ave” is a film that not only won the SXSW as the best narrative feature special jury award, but it caught the attention of Oscar and Grammy awards winner Jamie Fox.

We all know Jamie for his humor, insanely talented vocals, and award winning acting skills. With Jamie backing “Story Ave” as a producer, just know you are in for a ride.

The cast is filled with massive talent like Luis Guzman, Asante Blackk, Cassandra Freeman, Melvin Gregg, and so much more. The film is set in Bronx, New York. It follows a visual artist  teen, played by Asante Blackk, whose brother unfortunately passes away. The passing of his brother affects him severely which lands him in the wrong crowd. Without giving you any spoilers just know that this film may sound discouraging, but it is the complete opposite. It is a film that rewards the heart with happy tears and encouragement of the soul.

If you need some encouragement, make sure you check out the film now and celebrate Hispanic Heritage month.

Stepping into Style: Commemorating 50 Years of the Timberland Stoop, Birthplace of Hip-Hop in NYC

by Jasawn Pryce September 27, 2023
written by Jasawn Pryce

The vibrant energy of proud New Yorkers permeated every corner of the Timberland Stoop event on Saturday, September 23rd, in a Brooklyn warehouse at 267 Kent Avenue.

This gathering was a dual celebration like no other, commemorating Timberland’s 50th anniversary and the birth of hip-hop, both deeply intertwined with the essence of New York City. Timberland crafted the ultimate New York experience, fostering a sense of connection among New Yorkers and their beloved neighborhoods.

The event was a blend of fashion, music, and creativity, all centered on the iconic NY boot. Timberland placed a strong emphasis on community, boldness, and fun, transforming a compact 380+ square foot space into a lively, fully stocked bodega. The attention to detail was remarkable, from a cat sporting Tims inside the bodega to pigeons perched above, proudly flaunting their pair of butter boots. Timberland reintroduced their Classic 8-inch Waterproof Super Boot, initially introduced in 1979 as the “40 Below” Boot. These limited-release boots were only available at the Timberland Stoop and will make appearances at all Timberland Stoop locations.

Beyond the Timberland world, the event featured a workshop by creator Phillip Leyesa, showcasing the art of distressing. Besides this, there was a customized Timberland station at the Brooklyn pop-up offering personalized boot designs and shirts, complete with pins, patches, and vinyl designs by Taylor Simmons. It was an interactive and memorable experience, and we even customized our pair, adding to the fun.

The infectious playlist, courtesy of DJ Atelye Marc, set the stage for electrifying live performances by none other than NYC native rappers Dave East and Fabulous, who took the stage by storm, paying homage to hip-hop and Timberland’s impactful legacy.

Food and beverages, including soft drinks and mouth-watering plant-based patties from Seed Brooklyn, kept attendees energized as they danced and vibed the night away. Timberland’s Stoop tour experience will continue, with planned stops in various locations around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
