Killers, Cover-Ups, and Catherine: Inside ‘Furious’

Creator Liz Meriwether trades True American for true dread as Emmy Rossum, Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy, and Quincy Tyler Bernstine step into Hulu's new cat-and-mouse thriller about an FBI agent, a female serial killer, and the blurred line running between them.

Emmy Rossum, Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine & Creator Liz Meriwether Talk New Hulu Series ‘Furious’

In ‘Furious’, the new Hulu series from creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether, the woman behind New Girl and The Dropout takes a hard left into territory viewers may not have seen coming. The series follows Alice Black, an FBI agent played by Emmy Rossum, as she hunts a calculating female serial killer named Catherine, played by Lola Petticrew. Both women are walking their own path toward what they believe is justice, and as their lives begin to intertwine, the show turns into something less like a procedural and more like a slow, methodical psychological duet.

COURTESY OF HULU

Where New Girl built its world on warmth and improvised chaos, Furious builds its world on control. Every choice Catherine makes is calibrated. Every closing door in Alice’s investigation is one Catherine has already walked through. Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy, and Quincy Tyler Bernstine round out the ensemble as figures whose loyalties, secrets, and blind spots shape the space between the two women. It’s a series about persuasion, obsession, and the deeply unsettling realization that being understood is sometimes the most dangerous thing that can happen to you.

Directed and executive produced by Brian Kirk for its opening chapters, and produced by 20th Television and Searchlight Television, Furious arrives on Hulu with a cast that reads like a prestige-TV honor roll and a creator willing to burn her own comedic reputation down to build something audiences won’t be able to look away from. It is a show that asks who Catherine really is, but it is also a show that quietly asks who any of us would become if someone that persuasive got close enough.

COURTESTY OF HULU

The Knockturnal’s Jai Singh Nanda sat down with Rossum, Petticrew, McNairy, Lacy, Bernstine, and creator Liz Meriwether during the series’ New York press day at The Langham to discuss the tonal whiplash from Meriwether’s earlier work, the small human details that made Alice feel real to Rossum, and the specific challenge of playing a serial killer the audience is supposed to catch themselves rooting for.
