Writer and director Elegance Bratton tells a deeply moving and powerful story inspired by his own life in A24’s new film ‘The Inspection.’
The Inspection tells the story of a young gay Black man, who, after being rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines. He does whatever it takes to succeed as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, finding unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community along the way. He ends up finding a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.
Jeremy Pope stars in the film as Ellis French. Raúl Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Bokeem Woodbine, and Gabrielle Union round out the star-studded cast.
The Knockturnal got the chance to chat with Jeremy Pope, Gabrielle Union, Raúl Castillo, and more at the film’s NYFF premiere.
“It’s a beautiful, incredibly emotional, complicated story,” Gabrielle Union said of the film.
“This story is Black and it’s queer, it centers that story” Jeremy Pope said. “It centers the narrative that we are strong and that we are more than enough.”
See The Inspection only in theaters November 18.
