Exclusive: Fear The Walking Dead’s Christine Evangelista Breaks Down This Week’s Episode

by Julian Cannon May 16, 2022
written by Julian Cannon

Christine Evangelista’s character Sherry took a new turn in this week’s Fear the Walking Dead because she and her husband Dwight will soon become parents!

Sherry revealed to Dwight that she is pregnant. While it may be good news for the couple, they will have to navigate around the radioactive environment in Texas. The other factor is, Sherry and Dwight are joining Alicia in preparation with the war against Strand.

It was not the first time that these two had a conflict with a central character. On the main show The Walking Dead, it was Dwight who was involved with the war between Rick and Negan. Sherry decided to not participate in the conflict any longer as she ran away from The Saviors. With the emotional trauma she suffered, it was a good idea for her to get away from that mess.

Sherry and Dwight eventually found each other again on Fear The Walking Dead and they have grown closer as the time goes by. Christine Evangelista played the character since the main show. She joined the Fear cast during season six. It is easy to say that it is satisfying to see her evolution from her on-screen debut to now.

Sherry is a different character now and she is a person that does not take any nonsense from anyone at all. Christine Evangelista pours her heart out when she plays the character. Her and Austin Amelio bring out the best in each other and it is really showcased on this episode.

In this exclusive interview, we catch up with Christine Evangelista as we talk about the major scene from this week, what she would have taken home from the set, and much more.

There are only a few more episodes before this season of Fear The Walking Dead concludes.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 12 Review

by Julian Cannon May 8, 2022
written by Julian Cannon

This week on Fear The Walking Dead, we saw the demise of John Dorie Sr.

Almost a year after his son was shockingly killed, his dad meet the same fate. The circumstances were different however as John Sr. got baby Mo to her safety. During that journey out the tower, John Sr. got a walker bite and he was devoured by the last scene.

It has been quite a while since we got a major death on Fear The Walking Dead. This one felt like it mattered. That is because John Sr. admitted to Strand that he planted the radio in Howard’s room. Strand tested him to throw Howard off the tower and off he goes! The back and forth exchange between Strand and John Sr. is great as it showcased how compelling and convincing these two actors are. The Fear writers could have went away with the legacy talk. Especially since it is a zombie apocalypse and nobody should care about legacies or statuses.

As good as this episode is, did Morgan have to be the first person to respond to John Sr.’s radio call? Strand has all the radios and not one person heard the call? I was really annoyed by the super radios since season five and it is a comical trope on Fear now.

My favorite scene on this episode are the scenes between John and June. I was made to believe that one of them would be doomed for death when the water poured in with those walkers. Sure, they talked for a bit too. The action and sense of tension really brought out the quick time actions between the characters. They did everything they could do to save little Mo.

There are only a few more episodes left for the current season of Fear The Walking Dead. My main concern is, when is this so called “war” going to start that Alicia declared?

Fear The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 11 Review

by Julian Cannon May 1, 2022
written by Julian Cannon

Daniel’s journey on Fear The Walking Dead is no where near over.

That is because he is not to be messed with at all regardless of his state. Luciana also used his memory for her own advantage. As cold as that was, in the apocalypse, you have to do what you have to do in order to survive.

Is it safe to say that Arno served no purpose on Fear The Walking Dead? sure he died in this episode. But the whole time I was watching him meet his demise, I did not care to feel bad for him. At least the walkers had a great snack. I am interested to see if Wes is really joining Strand, or if he is there to take him down by a surprise.

As a result of Luiana using Daniel’s amnesia against him, they get get close to Strand’s Tower. I actually felt something for the first time in a while. That is, we’re going to lose him by the end of the season. There needs to be some thinning out of the cast by the time Madison returns. Daniel still believes that Ofelia is alive. Ofelia has been dead since the third season and I still think that he is somewhat grieving.

The writing team deserves a lot of credit for letting the majority of the episode be in Spanish / subtitled as well. I have always found The Walking Dead franchise to be diverse, and I especially love how it is incorporated into the series. This was also Alycia Debnam-Carey’s directorial debut on Fear The Walking Dead and her style is interesting. Alycia has a great visionary mind when it comes to camera angles, mood, and identifying a good story. It turned out to be a great episode of Fear. “Ofelia” should have been the season opener!

On the Scene: Firebird Los Angeles Premiere

by Serena Khahera May 1, 2022
written by Serena Khahera

The Knockturnal was on the scene this past week for the Firebird premiere at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Starring Tom Prior, Oleg Zagorodnii, Diana Pozharskaya, Jake-Thomas Henderson, Margus Prangel and Nicholas Woodeson. Based on a true story about Sergey Fetisov during the Cold War, Firebird follows a young Sergey, played by Tom Prior, who develops a relationship with a charismatic fighter pilot Roman, played by Oleg Zagorodnii, on an Air Force base in occupied Estonia at the height of 1970’s Communist rule. The film is based off of Sergey true story of forbidden love and is a passionate love story set against the backdrop of war torn and occupied Estonia.

Sergey Fetisov was born on August 12, 1952 in Oryol, Soviet Russia. He served his two year mandatory conscription, which was normal for every Soviet man to undergo, in the 1970s at the Soviet Air Force Base in occupied Estonia. Here he fell in love with a young fighter pilot, and our film begins. Sergey published his memoir “A Tale About Roman” in the early ’90s under the pseudonym Sergey Nizhny. The story is one of courage, love and fear during the height of the Cold War, and following his heart in the face of all the dangers of the Soviet Union at the time. It is a testament and example of true love, and echoes the same message of many queer films that love is love.

The film opens with Sergey, Tom Prior, a young soldier who dreams of becoming an actor in Moscow, who is counting the days until his military service ends. His life is turned upside down when he locks eyes with Roman, Oleg Zagorodnii, a fighter pilot newly assigned to his base. Driven by their undeniable attraction, Sergey and Roman navigate the precarious line between love and friendship at a time when Soviet men in uniform caught having a sexual affair was met with the severest punishment. As their friendship grows into love, the men risk their freedom and their lives to be together in the face of an all-seeing Soviet regime.

Director and co-writer Peeter Rebane said, “We live at a time when basic human rights, equality and freedom are once again under attack around the world. Same sex families are still illegal or discriminated against in many countries, including modern day Russia. I trust that telling Sergey’s true story helps people to understand others who are different from them, to realize that love is love, or as Sergey says: ‘My love was no less than your love.’ At the core, this film is about having the courage to overcome one’s fears and choose love. It’s a story about discovering your identity in an authoritarian society, while navigating the border between love and friendship. How do you deal with conflicting feelings when there is nobody to talk to, asking: ‘Is it right to feel like this?’ or ‘How can I be with the person I love?'”. Another aspect of the film that is quite unique is lead actor Tom Prior, who became a co-writer as the filming progressed. Prior was approached to play Sergey before becoming involved in the writing process. Being a writer and a performer presented some new challenges for the British actor who said, “Sometimes I would walk into a scene, and it would be completely different to how I had imagined it when we were writing the script,” said Prior. Prior and Rebane lived and breathed this story for two years while developing the script until finally being able to share the masterpiece with us.

At the premiere, the event also featured a short film premiere from Ukranian director Maxim Varen and his team titled “Past Lives” starring Panagiotis Margetis and Francisco Martos. We got to talk to him as well about his movie and how excited he was to share it with us and watch Firebird.

Firebird is now playing in cinemas, so don’t forget to check it out as well as our interviews and behind the scenes TikTok above!

Marlou Shines Bright In DTLA’s Fiercely-Competitive Food Scene

by Jonathan Tolliver April 10, 2022
written by Jonathan Tolliver

I hope y’all are ready for a double-feature of ‘Marlou and Me,’ because my time at this sensational downtown restaurant was nothing short of cinematic. Chefs Marcos and Louis have built an eatery that’s at once inventive and unpretentious, with beautifully-presented, upscale offerings that taste familiar and piquant.

It’s obvious why their star is on the rise. The chefs, who also helm the adjacent Burrow Bar and Kitchen, have an incredibly-fine pedigree, which recently includes Marcos’ turn as a celebrity cuisinier on Bravo’s Below Deck Sailing Yacht, and Louis’ lauded time at the helm of Taste on Melrose.

All Photos by Ron Clark

The tuna tartare was a smash; it was incredibly flavorful and gently briny with extra kick brought out by soy citronette dressing. I tend to think of tartare as a bit of an afterthought, an amuse bouche to the bigger, meatier items I’m sure to order, but this dish stayed with me long after the check.

The gnocchi bone marrow was another success. This was the most down-home of the dishes I tried; the familiar taste of gnocchi with the added texture of bone marrow and delicious pickled onions. I appreciate the chefs side-stepping the oft-added portobello mushroom, as they’re my lifelong nemesis. This would be the most-popular dish at the cookout, which is where I live, palette-wise.

It’s not hard for me to guess the most-popular menu item at this place – though hell, maybe I’m wrong. From where I sit, the kimchi seafood paella is Marlou’s heavy-hitter, and endlessly pleasing dish that diners are familiar with, but with the flair you’d expect from two chefs who pride themselves on personality.

Their personal touch appears in two ways: first, the presentation of this dish is to die for. It looks absolutely incredible, a succulent swirl of oranges and greens, as if someone turned the saturation up on standard kimchi. You can’t wait to dig in. Their was also clearly care put into how a diner might approach this plate, with clams lining the plate, inviting you to the softer textures at the center of the dish.

Second, the calamari, shrimp and pork belly are cooked in such a way that adds heartiness to an offering that can, in less capable hands, leave a diner wanting more. It was delectably seasoned and presented with gusto, both in the portion and in the more fibrous tasting texture of the meat. I would recommend this ten times out of ten.

Lastly, the octopus was another filling and forthright dish, with gochujang aioli and sweet and spicy sauce adding a hint of heat, while letting the tasty tendril do most of the heavy lifting, flavor-wise.

Compliments to our bartender Kendra, who served expertly-made cocktails and hilarious conversation. Her signature concoction, Fade to Red, is officially coming to the menu soon, and you’d be wise to try it. It slaps, gang.

Marlou is a jewel of LA’s highly-competitive downtown food scene, and I’m grateful to see great new ideas in a restaurant space that needed boldness. In my time downtown I’ve seen a few places take over the space, but none nearly of this restaurant’s caliber. Kudos to all.
