Running with New Balance Means Running YOUR Way

by Ishan Wankavala November 14, 2023
written by Ishan Wankavala

With the impending TCS New York City Marathon, a long-distance run that sprawled all five boroughs of NYC and over 26.2 miles, New Balance decided to host an event to spotlight specific individuals that had signed up for the marathon, and with the help of New Balance, had taken their game and motivation to the next level. These individuals came from all walks of life and had varying levels of expertise running, and they therefore served as the perfect panelists to channel motivation and generate excitement for the upcoming event.

The event space itself was exuberant and lively, with a bar serving champagne, beer, and wine, and cater waiters walking around with hors d’oeuvres, such as spicy rigatoni vodka and vegetable dumplings. The surrounding walls were emblazoned with the words, “Run Your Way.”

The history of the 1080 sneaker

Along the back of the room was also a display of some of New Balance’s newest creations in terms of footwear, specifically focusing on the 1080 line. A visual diagram of the shoe’s history over 12 iterations was also displayed. I walked around and examined each one while trying a rice ball from the kitchen, and soon enough, the interview with the panelists was announced to begin soon.

Walking onto the stage first was Greydy Diaz, who would serve as the moderator and interviewer for the event. Her backstory was interesting because she had a natural connection with New Balance; she grew up extremely close to a New Balance factory, and could see first hand the impact that brought onto her community. Now, she works as a journalist, producer, and host of the show “Test Run”. She quieted the audience, introduced herself, and ushered in the individuals that would be interviewed.

Moderator Greydy Diaz

Jess Movold, Tommie Runz, Harry Hudson, and Marlon “Chito” Vera walked onto the stage, each person with their own special connection to New Balance and running, and each a participant in the upcoming marathon. Through the interview process, I was able to learn about what motivates each individual, and their unique stories that allowed them to discover running. Jess Movold is an elite runner that is focused on using running as a way to build a community for others, and connect newcomers to the sport. Working as an athlete, coach, creator, and journalist, she works to spread awareness about the benefits of running and make it as assessable as possible.

Tommie Runz used running as a way of coping with his struggles growing up in Detroit while battling addiction, sobriety, and fatherhood. He now works as a content creator and hosts his own Youtube series, which he uses to bring people together and maintain inclusivity, and also uses the platform to talk about his vulnerability and how running has helped him.

Harry Hudson is the most recent advocate of running from those on stage, having only started several months ago, but his story was no less powerful. He battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma early in his life, and as a musician, he used music and running to maintain his physical and mental health. He will be participating in the TCS marathon for the first time this year, and raising money for his charity.

Lastly was Marlon “Chito” Vera, an Ecuadorian UFC fighter who utilizes running to build mental and physical strength, by running thirteen miles each Sunday as part of his training. With this increasing his stamina in and out, he can stay more focused during fights and last much longer than his opponents. The most unlikely out of the panelists to be thought of as a runner, he demonstrated to us that anyone could run.

I truly felt inspired after hearing the panelists’ stories, and I began to reflect on my own workouts and how I may incorporate running to be a part of them. I have traditionally overlooked cardio exercises, but after learning about the overwhelming benefits to the heart, body, and mind, I decided that I would take the initiative to begin running.

Rapper Action Bronson gave a stellar live performance to end the night

I could not run in the TCS marathon this year, but I really want to do so next year, and this would only be possible after becoming comfortable with running. Of course, New Balance would be there with their amazing products along the way.

At the end of the night, we were greeted by a performance by Queens-based rapper Action Bronson and his band, who played a myriad of covers, original pieces, and Action Bronson’s own music. Donning New Balance 990s, his energy and care towards lyricism were truly a sight to behold. On the way out, New Balance employees were giving sneakers to all media attendees, much to my surprise. Internally acknowledging that I had no excuse to avoid running now, I added a reminder to my phone to go on a run the next day. I no longer felt threatened by the prospect, because after all, I would be running my way.

Invincible Season 2, Part 1 Review

by Julian Cannon November 5, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

The second season of Invincible takes us deeper into the intricate world of its characters. When Omni-Man isn’t helping with Viltrum’s expansion plans, he leads a seemingly ordinary life as Nolan Grayson, alongside his wife Debbie. Mark, his son, has embraced his powers as Invincible.

Based on Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s comic series, Invincible manages to maintain the complex storytelling of its source material. The first season’s shocking revelation of Omni-Man’s true nature sets the stage for an intense battle that has dire consequences for Chicago and its residents.

A poignant aspect of the season is Debbie’s struggle with depression and alcoholism, offering a raw portrayal of her pain. The series addresses concerns about its pacing, delivering more focused storytelling, emphasizing the idea that superpowers do not inherently create heroes but often lead to danger. The introduction of Angstrom Levy, a multi-dimensional portal manipulator, highlights the consequences of good intentions gone awry.

Familiar characters return with their own unique quirks. The Lizard League remains bumbling, while the Mauler Twins bring humor as they navigate their clones. The eccentric Doc Seismic introduces a philosophical perspective, and the Atlanteans are enraged by Omni-Man’s actions. Mark and Amber begin college life, their experiences reflecting the challenges of dating a superhero.

Amidst new beginnings, the threat from outer space looms, reminding us that the Viltrumites won’t let go of their grudges. The complex father-son dynamic between Omni-Man and Mark adds depth to the narrative, leaving us eager to explore the unresolved issues.

The season’s finale for the first half showcases Mark, Amber, and William’s graduation in a charming scene. As the series delves into more nuanced aspects of superhero life, it leaves us contemplating the evolving landscape of the superhero genre, from a childlike fascination with Superman to the teenage angst and violence explored in this generation of superhero narratives. We’re left wondering what a mature, Zen-like superhero story might entail in the future.

In the case of Invincible, it’s evident that the decision to split the season was made with the intention of delivering a high-quality viewing experience. While the wait can be challenging, it’s often well worth it. This structure allows the creators to take their time to deliver a satisfying and well-executed story. So, while the wait may be difficult, it often pays off in terms of the final product.

A Mexican Courtyard Style Restaurant Opens Its Doors in Williamsburg

by Branda Ayo November 4, 2023
written by Branda Ayo

A Mexican-inspired Courtyard opened its doors to Brooklynites in Williamsburg earlier last month, inviting them to enjoy Mexican gastronomy and culture as they experience the menu for the first time. The popular food district has long been an epicenter for culinary innovation, drawing the attention of food enthusiasts from far and wide. By offering contemporaryΒ  interpretations of classic Mexican dishes, Mexi navigates the delicate balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.

In an ever-evolving culinary landscape, Mexi distinguishes itself through a commitment to authentic flavors, cultural immersion, and a holistic dining experience. The echoes of Mexico resound not only through the delicious dishes but also through every aspect of Mexi’s decor. Traditional tiles, hand-painted artworks by local artists, and Mexican symbolism create an environment that transports diners to the heart of Mexico. The restaurant breathes life into century-old church pews, reclaimed beams, and custom doors, which stand as artifacts of history, now repurposed for the enjoyment of patrons. Large oil paintings adorning the walls capture the essence of Mexican landscapes, agave plants, and traditional Folklorico Dance Dresses, creating a sensory journey through the country’s diverse regions. Every detail, from the Zapotec Queen-sized rug to artisan hand-painted tiles, adds texture and authenticity to the space, ensuring that Mexi remains a masterpiece in culinary immersion.

Mexi FoodΒ

The Mexi team drew inspiration from their Mexican heritage to create a menu that pays homage to the country’s rich culinary traditions. Spearheading these efforts is Chef Zenaido Hernandez, an experienced talent from the restaurant group, with the consultation of Michelin chef Johan Svensson from Aquavit. At Mexi, everything is made from scratch, from corn tortillas to mole sauces and hand-rolled corn masa dumplings, often referred to as ‘gnocchi,’ showcasing a commitment to authenticity and quality.

  • Fire-roasted tomatillo & jalapeΓ±o salsa verde ($14):Β  Mexi’s salsa verde offers a flavorful and mild option that’s perfect for dipping chips. The tangy notes and smoky heat in the red salsa add depth and variety to the experience.
  • Tuna Serrano Aguachile($19): While not everyone may be a ceviche enthusiast, Mexi’s take on the Tuna Serrano Aguachile is a culinary adventure. The combination of fresh tuna marinated in a cucumber-lime broth, mixed with herbs and vegetables, results in a refreshing and delightful dish. It’s a must-try for seafood lovers.
  • Short Rib Birria Tacos ($24): These open-faced tacos feature juicy short ribs, served with their own consommΓ© sauce, offering a deeply satisfying and richly flavored option.
  • Pork Shoulder Al Pastor ($26): An embodiment of Mexican street food, these taco skewers feature guajillo pepper-marinated pork shoulder, served in a grilled pineapple. Guests have the opportunity to create their perfect bite with complementing salsa matcha, salsa roja, and house-made tortillas.
  • Popover Churros:Β  For dessert, The Popover Churros, reminiscent of traditional churros, are served with dulce de leche and Mexican Chili chocolate sauces. A sweet and indulgent finish to Mexi’s menu.

Mexi CocktailsΒ

Curated by Ramon Morado and Carlos Becerra, Mexi’s cocktail menu is a celebration of Mexican spirits, showcasing rare small-batch tequilas and Mexican rums. These ingredients serve as the foundation Mexi’s cocktails that draw inspiration from Mexico’s history and heritage.

  • Mexi in the City: A Mexican-inspired take on the Cosmopolitan, with colors reminiscent of the vibrant streets of Mexico.
  • El Concord: A mix of Margarita and a wine float, symbolizing the historical period when Mexico was occupied by Spain.
  • Maria Felix: Inspired by Mexican Actress and singer Maria Felix, known for receiving roses after her performances, this cocktail captures her essence with its pink and red hues.
  • Sergio Leon: Drawing inspiration from the agave landscapes in Mexico, Sergio Leon incorporates green to represent the agave plant itself, accompanied by foam as part of the fermentation process.

Mexi is located at 149 North 9th Street and is open daily from 4 to 11 p.m., with reservations available through Resy.

If You Build It, They Will Come: How the Rebelle Rally is Showing the World What EVs Can Do in the Wilderness

by Catherina Gioino October 27, 2023
written by Catherina Gioino

The Rebelle Rally is using green hydrogen to charge electric vehicles throughout the rally’s eight days in the wilderness

Women drivers are making their own roads in the eighth annual Rebelle Rally, where rocky uphills, sandy dunes, and chilly nights are no match for these tough ladies and their navigational skills. Now, the longest rally raid in the country is proving even electric vehicles are unrivaled by rough terrain– and the lack of power outlets.

Nearly 130 women at the helm of 64 cars made their way through eight days of rugged terrain in the open expanse of the Eastern Sierras last week. Put into [mostly] bone stock vehicles– cars any consumer can walk out of a dealership with– these two women driver-navigator teams showcased their abilities to think quickly and navigate distinct but rather inconspicuous surroundings while looking for specific markers, all without the use of cell phones, GPS, or other technology.

As if that wasn’t challenging enough, five teams completed Rebelle in electric vehicles: four Rivians (an R1T pickup even finished first in the rally’s 4×4 class) and the not-yet-released Ford Mustang Mach-E.

For off-road racing legend and Rebelle Rally founder and director Emily Miller, figuring out how to charge the vehicles seemingly in the middle of nowhere without any electrical outputs was just another test she had to overcome.

β€œI assumed it was gonna be easier than we thought. But see, once I start something, I don’t like to quit,” said Miller at the Browns Owens River Campground on the eve of the rally’s start. β€œAnd it was not easy, but it was worth doing because it’s the difference between us being in business.”

Rebelle Rally founder and race director Emily Miller

That isn’t to say creating the Rebelle Rally, let alone ensuring it continues to run as smoothly as it does year after year, isn’t a challenge in itself. Miller has to coordinate between federal, state, and municipal governments, secure permits, and ensure last-minute weather changes won’t undo months of hard work by Miller and her team. This year, Miller had to personally go through portions of the course that were decimated when Hurricane Hilary made landfall in California in August– and she said that will only be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dealing with climate change.

Miller, who has seen the podium at many renowned races and has instructed over 8,000 people how to navigate and drive off-road, isn’t sounding the alarm bell for no reason. Cars and trucks emit over a fifth of all greenhouse gases emitted in the United States, the second-worst greenhouse gas emitter globally (we’ve only just recently lost first place to China). That means vehicle usage in the United States alone accounts for one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. With about 1.5 billion tons of greenhouse gases emitted by highway vehicles per year, and with the effects of climate change becoming all the more apparent in our daily lives, ameliorating even just a small portion of emissions can go a long way in helping mitigate any future effects on our environment.Β

β€œPeople tell me that they want their kids to do this. If they want their kids to do it someday soon, I was gonna have to figure it out,” Miller said more bluntly. β€œAnd it’s not easy and nobody is doing a long-distance rally like this.”

Rebelle Rally founder Emily Miller chats with staff as the Mustang Mach-E Rally charges via energy produced using green hydrogen

Rebelle has been working with Salt Lake City-based energy company Renewable Innovations for several years now. Still, Miller explained with five electric vehicles in the rally this year (the largest electric field they’ve had thus far), the team had to come up with more innovative solutions.

β€œMost people don’t realize how much it takes to create rapid power. It’s one thing to trickle charge, but rapid power takes a tremendous amount of power and many don’t do it well.”

To facilitate this, Miller and the team behind Rebelle took to securing green hydrogen, a promising and environmentally friendly form of hydrogen that is produced through a process called electrolysis, which involves splitting water into its constituent elements, Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2).Β

Let’s take a quick science breather here:Β

Through water electrolysis, electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, or hydropower, is used to split water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). This process is done using an electrolyzer, with hydrogen at one end (a cathode, the negative electrode) and oxygen at the other (an anode, the positive electrode). The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then separated in the electrolyzer, with the hydrogen gas collected and then stored for use as energy. In this case, hydrogen is used in fuel cell batteries by combining with oxygen from the air to generate electricity that then powers an electric motor. No greenhouse gas emissions are created through this process, making green hydrogen, well, truly green. In fact, the only byproduct is water.Β

Whew, now we’re back.Β

You might be asking yourself, β€˜Hey, this is great, why don’t we have this everywhere?’ Miller: β€œSo we’ve had issues getting access to hydrogen. A lot of people think hydrogen is easy to get. Well, turns out it’s not.”

The Renewable Innovations truck charging the Mustang Mach-E Rally

Miller and her team spent countless hours calling presidents of companies and asking anyone from those at small start-ups to higher-ups at Boeing how to obtain enough green hydrogen to power five electric vehicles throughout the Rebelle Rally’s eight days. The calls that were returned mentioned either obscene financial numbers, less than-promised quantities of hydrogen, inferior storage vessels, or all of the above.Β

Cold calling was only one step of the equation: Miller and Rebelle organizers had to hit the books, creating graphs of multiple factors like the power demands of each EV, ambient temperature, and elevation. β€œIt’s every type of temperature, it’s every type of terrain, every altitude. We will go from 10 feet above sea level to 10,000 feet.”

β€œWe start looking at the numbers of the Rally: the terrain, temperature, the hill, the climbing, the descending, and I literally have to put that out on a graph, and then figure out where to put the remote rapid power so that we can figure out exactly how much power we’re really going to need for the whole base camp,” Miller explained. β€œAnd Renewable Innovations has been able to help us map that out and [we’ve gotten] to know these electric vehicles and what they take.”

β€œWe have 800 kilograms of green hydrogen. It’s a lot of hydrogen, but it’s what it takes just to power these electric vehicles remotely and rapidly and to power the base camp as our backup to get down the road,” said Miller, who explained an event organizer had to drive to Georgia to retrieve the hydrogen, stored in type IV hydrogen vessels made from polymeric liner, the lightest commercially-available hydrogen storage solution yet.

β€œFor the whole, that’ll last the entire rally,” Miller exclaimed cautiously. β€œBut I have to tell you that hydrogen trucks really aren’t quite ready. We’ve been working with all the different companies. But it’s getting there. So over the next few years, more green hydrogen plants are coming online in the country. And that’s going to be great because how do you create tons and tons of power? So it’s pretty interesting.”

Peter Schultz and Hether Lee Fedullo stand before the Mustang Mach-E Rally

Miller wasn’t the only person raving over the use of green hydrogen to power EVs. Ford Motor Company engineers Hether Lee Fedullo and Peter Schultz were both in attendance during the Rebelle Rally’s prologue to check out the never-before-seen Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally ahead of its 2024 consumer debut.Β

β€œIt’s really exciting to see it in this kind of environment. I’ve worked on the Mach-E since it was a concept, so I’ve seen this whole journey of the product,” said Fedullo, who is a Vehicle Dynamics Supervisor on not only the Mach-E but the Ford Escape, Kuga, Corsair, and other programs. β€œNow seeing it in an early environment is really exciting. New space, just opening it up to more customers to see what the vehicle can do and see how you can have fun with it.”

β€œIt’s built for the dirt. We’re really excited to be here at the Rebelle Rally and show the world what this car can do,” said Schultz, who works in EV Program Management on the Mach-E Rally team. β€œWe’re taking it off the street and onto the unbeaten path.”

Fedullo and Schultz were speaking with Mach-E driver Bailey Campbell and her navigating counterpart, Kaleigh Miller, upon their return from the Rebelle Rally prologue, a pretrial dry run of what teams can expect for the rest of the rally. Check out our previous coverage to learn more about Campbell and Miller as well as other women competing under Ford here. Also, read about the fun we had in the Ford F-150 Raptor R here.

Water is the only byproduct when using green hydrogen to create energy through the process of water electrolysis

The engineers were looking for “anything that they’re willing to share, to be honest, because we’re not out there, they are,” said Fedullo. β€œIt’s actually just better to hear what they have to say. They have a lot of experience in these kinds of environments and I’m wanting to hear what their thoughts are on this vehicle versus other things that they’ve driven so that we can always look for ways to improve, get better, and be more competitive.”

Both engineers touched upon the lack of EV charging infrastructure in the United States. There are currently only about 150,000 EV chargers in the country, serving more than 2.1 million EVs on the roads today. Only a quarter of those publicly available chargers are Level 3 fast chargers. Experts believe the country will need to install more than a million Level 3 chargers by 2030 to catch up with demand. However, both engineers were also cautiously optimistic about the country’s direction as EVs become more mainstream.Β

β€œThat’s where all the innovation’s happening. Electrification is the future,” Schultz said. β€œProgress is a process and Ford is doing a lot with their BlueOval Charge Network, and as time goes on and as the technology continues to evolve, we’ll get more range, batteries will start getting cheaper and we’ll just continue to develop all this technology.”

For Fedullo, it’s personal. The engineer has been driving a Mach-E for the last few years, and she said life’s gotten easier.

The Mustang Mach-E Rally charging at the Rebelle Rally

β€œI’ve just noticed over the last couple of years how much easier it is, with my comfort level to just the infrastructure. At least in the Michigan area, where I drive, it is a lot better. I feel like year after year we’re making great strides. So I just hope that customers will be open-minded to driving this technology and checking it out,” Fedullo said. β€œThere’s just a lot of really cool things about EVs and the way you interact with them, from the power and performance to the quietness and some extent, the refinement of them compared to some of the equivalent in price gas vehicles. It’s really exciting.”

Fedullo concluded that the Mach-E and electric vehicles in general were best suited for the rally and this environment.Β

β€œFrom a rally standpoint, I think for me, it’s really exciting to be in these natural spaces and know that you’re leaving a small eco-footprint. I know there’s charging and infrastructure and things that need to happen for this car to be here,” she said. β€œBut it is operating relatively cleanly when it’s out here.”

β€œIt’s very quiet. It’s not scaring animals away and making all kinds of really loud noises,” Fedullo ended. β€œBut it is really like a serene feeling, the outdoor nature and driving as fast as you can drive this car and hearing the woods, knowing that you are making a very small footprint where you are.”
