CaskX Whiskey Investment Specialists hosted an exclusive Glen Grant 72 VIP Whisky Tasting event on Thursday, October 19th, in Beverly Hills at a private estate.  CaskX hosted the exclusive tasting the foothills of Beverly Hills that offered guests the opportunity to experience some of the finest whisky of all time, including the super exclusive Glen Grant 72 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Gordon & MacPhail, worth $126,00 for the bottle.  Hosted by actor and entrepreneur Oliver Trevena, with CaskX Founder + CEO Jeremy Kasler and wife Lydia.  

VIP notables included worldwide Mexican soccer star Javiar “Chicharito” Hernandez (LA Galaxy), actors Peter Facinelli, DeVaughn Nixon (Winning Time/Snowfall), Ross McCall, Brock O’Hurn, Cory George, Lorenzo Antonucci, UFC Champion MMA fighter Luke Rockhold, among several others at the intimate affair plus actress Candela Marquez and actress Chaley Rose who performed vocals set to a jazz band, along with Pink Floyd’s Scott Page on sax.

Only a handful of bottles of the Gordon & MacPhail’s Glen Grant 72yr old exist and it has been described as one of “the most historically significant whiskeys ever produced.”  The total production was limited to 290 bottles, with 200 sold before in pre-allocation before release. The rare and highly collectible whisky, which was presented in a hand-cut crystal decanter, was sold alongside a single one-off NFT artwork and its original by celebrated political cartoonist Harry Harrison, entitled ‘Year of the Dram 1948’ commemorating 1948  [the year the whisky was made] on 20 May 2021 in Hong Kong for a record HK $937,500 (just under £95,000) including buyer’s premium. The current value for the Glen Grant 72 is listed as $126,666.00 for the 1000 ml bottle.

The evening took place poolside at the lavish grounds featuring Whiskey Cocktails by Old Glory, a distillery partner of CaskX, Aged Whisky Tastings by Glen Grant, Charcuterie, Caviar and Hors D’oeuvres, Musical Entertainment and custom decanter engraving under the moonlight.

One of the top whisky experts in the world Siddharth Sawkar, was on hand to offer a special tasting experience. Guests also were treated to a lavish charcuterie spread, custom whiskey mixology bar, and decadent caviar tasting bar by Golden Reserve Caviar. Siddharth Sawkar is a global whiskey expert and one of only nine Masters of Scotch currently recognized by the Council of Whiskey Masters. He is an avid collector of old and rare whiskeys, a leading presenter for the Los Angeles Whisky Club. Live music featured vocalist, actress Chaley Rose (Nashville), and Pink Floyd saxophonist Scott Page with tunes from a jazz band all evening featuring keyboard and strings.

Avril Lavigne Hits Vegas for “When We Were Young Festival” and MusiCares Charity Bowling Event

Avril Lavigne, notable music artist and reigning punk rock princess, is also the current face of BeatBox Beverages’ inaugural Creator Series, having collaborated on her own flavor, Pink Lemonade Punch. Lavigne attended the Unite The United & Charity Bomb When We Were Young Festival Bowling Event to Benefit MusicCares, Presented by BeatBox Beverages in Las Vegas, held at Brooklyn Bowl at The LINQ, the bustling outdoor village of shops, restaurants and bars located on The Strip.
 
At the event, pop punk icon Avril signed custom BeatBox guitars for some lucky fans at the VIP Bowling event, which featured her Pink Lemonade Punch flavor. Avril was joined at the event by BeatBox founders Aimy Steadman and Brad Schultz, who were on hand to support the charity bowling festival kickoff. The festival and kick off event were presented by BeatBox, “The World’s Tastiest Portable Party Punch.”
 
During the charity bowling event held at Brooklyn Bowl, performances took place from Bowling For Soup and Plain White T’s, as well as Sum 41, during the evening which benefitted MusiCares and was organized by Charity Bomb. 
Lavigne was also surprised at the bash with a giant cover blowup of her recent Food & Beverage Magazine July 2023 issue cover, which she also autographed at the event, presented to her by F&B Editor In Chief Lauren Kane.
 
The following day, Avril surprised festival goers coming out on stage during All Time Low’s set and performing “Fake As Hell.”  Attendees enjoyed BeatBox beverages all weekend at their concert grounds activation, gaining momentum as the most in demand concert circuit RTD beverage, hitting over 100 festivals to date.

Meet the Women Competing for Ford at the Rebelle Rally, the Longest Off-Road Rally in the US

Who needs roads when you can build them yourself?

That’s exactly what these ladies did at the eighth annual Rebelle Rally, a 1600-mile rally through the West Coast’s many ecosystems, and the first women’s off-road navigation rally raid in the United States. Women of all ages and backgrounds came to the Eastern Sierras last week to kick off the eight-day rally, which rewards quick thinking and resourcefulness rather than putting pedal to the metal.

This year, 64 teams consisting of driver-navigator duos competed in the rally, where GPS and cell phones are all but nonexistent as the women are tested on their navigation and driving abilities. Winning the rally is less about speed and more about points: those who can find their navigation markers with as few setbacks as possible gain more points that are added to their total. 

The Rebelle Rally puts these ladies through rough terrains and 12-hour long days of driving all the while getting what little rest they can while sleeping in tents where temperatures sometimes drop to a bone-chilling 14 degrees overnight. Trudging through one giant treasure map in the middle of weather extremes using old-school paper maps is hardly a walk in the park, but for Laura Wanlass, it might come close.

“It’s nice to be out of society. You’re truly present, you have no other thoughts, nothing creeps in,” said Wanlass, who daylights as a lawyer in Washington state. “Then you go home and you can’t remember anything of your past. You can’t remember the password to your work computer. It’s that fast.” 

Wanlass is one of several women sponsored by the Ford Motor Company this year. An official Silver Sponsor of the rally, Ford has competed for four consecutive years at Rebelle, with five teams racing under the carmaker this year.

Although Wanlass might find it difficult to remember her day-to-day life outside of the rally, it’s for good reason: she and her fellow teammate Maria Guitar finished third and second overall in the 4×4 class in 2021 and 2022 respectively. This year, the two finished third overall, in the Bronco Raptor.

“We’ve been on the podium for the last two years,” explained Guitar, a day trader from Columbus, Ohio. “You start dreaming weeks and weeks and weeks out.” Guitar, who navigates as Wanlass drives, said this is the first year they’re sponsored by Ford, but that hasn’t made a difference in their strategy.

“We want the most, always. We’ve placed that pressure on ourselves, and so we have to just not worry about it and focus. Bring your best, do your best.”

Ford brought four of their successful Bronco and Bronco Sport vehicles for another multi-year win after the Ford Bronco Sport scored a historic three-peat win last year in the X-Cross class. Shelby Hall and Rori Lewis finished fifth in the Bronco Raptor, and Jessica Moore and Melissa Clark came in first in the rally’s X-Class division, competing in the Bronco Sport.

Driver Karisa Haydon and navigator Trista Smith, who were the 2022 Rebelle Rally Cross Rookies of the Year and Stage 7 winners, moved up to the 4×4 class in the Bronco WildTrak this year. They finished sixth in the new division.

“We were rookies to the purest form. We had never driven off-road,” said Smith. “We trained the entire year for it but before that, we’re not super offroaders, we were not into motorsports and had no navigation experience whatsoever. So we just really dove in. And it allowed us to do really well last year.”

The duo explained they’re keeping to the strategy they employed in last year’s Rebelle, namely, how efficient they were on the road– or lack thereof. Haydon, a stay-at-home with a pair of daughters, ages two and four, got her time management skills while working in management at Starbucks. “I live and die by that kitchen timer,” she said as Smith joked she would get out of the car to see if they had reached their marker to receive points. “I’m the time controller in the vehicle. I’m like ‘We need to leave now to hit the next marker, and we only have a few minutes at this one.”

Haydon and Smith’s communication skills stem from their long cultivated ongoing friendship: while Smith and her family– who have been living nomadically for years– were driving through Portland, Oregon on a rainy day when their car broke down. Smith’s husband called his friend, Haydon’s husband, for a new alternator, who had one but was away. Haydon went to save the day herself, delivering the alternator and inviting the Smiths back to her home to fix the car.

“So we just sat there and had some rum and coke in the garage,” said Smith. “And we hit it off and went from having no experience to doing trainings to going from zero to getting sponsored by Ford. It’s incredible.”

In addition to the four Bronco gas-powered cars at this year’s Rebelle Rally, Ford is also showcasing a new car that has yet to be released to the public. Bailey Campbell, a driver, and her navigating counterpart, Kaleigh Miller, are pioneering the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E Rally for the first time ahead of its 2024 launch for the mass market.

“The range thing is completely different from gas mileage. I think that’s probably the biggest change for me,” Campbell said upon her and Miller’s return from a day of driving during the Rally’s prologue, a practice day for competitors before the points start to matter. “That and the lack of noise. It was 50 percent laughter today because we’re wearing helmets and all you hear is us breathing and not the gas.”

“This is my first time in the car, let alone electric,” said Miller, a CPA living in Tucson, Arizona who has competed in five of the last eight Rebelles. “So we were in the car yesterday, testing out all the buttons. I think for the general public, it’s a pretty cool way to test out the range and the general environment.”

There’s no better way to test the range of an all-electric car than pushing it to its limit in the middle of nowhere on a single charge. Both the nearly 130 competitors and the rally organizers and staff are lodging at secluded campsites in three different areas of California throughout the rally, miles from the nearest outlet.

To facilitate not only the Mach-E but also four Rivians, the Rebelle Rally enlisted the help of a new ingenious charging solution as brought by Salt Lake City-based Renewable Innovations.

“We have 800 kilograms of green hydrogen. It’s a lot of hydrogen, but it’s what it takes just to power these electric vehicles remotely and rapidly and to power the base camp as our backup to get down the road,” Miller said, explaining how Georgia and North Carolina are the only two locations in the United States to find such green hydrogen at that scale.

Given the difficulty in sourcing and the financial constraints in securing such a large amount of green hydrogen, Miller explained that she and her team quite literally hit the books, putting pencil to paper and calculating how much energy the Mach-E and other electric vehicles would require throughout the Rebelle Rally’s course. 

“It’s every type of temperature, it’s every type of terrain, every altitude. We will go from 10 feet above sea level to 10,000 feet,” Miller said. “People tell me that they want their kids to do this. If they want their kids to do it someday soon, I was gonna have to figure it out. And it’s not easy and nobody is doing a long-distance rally like this.” In response to the push for more sustainable modes of transportation and referencing California’s ban on the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035, Miller said, “This thing’s not going to happen unless we figure this component out.”

And the competitors love that not only are they pushing themselves to the limit, but the organizers behind Rebelle are as well. “It’s also a bigger electric field than they’ve ever had before,” added navigator Kaleigh Miller. “But a lot of technologies have evolved over time. Tents now are clicks and we’re asleep that much faster. In this rally, every second counts, rest and drive.”

On The Scene: Why this year’s New York Comic Con was a dud.

New York Comic Con, a highly anticipated event for fans of all things pop culture, experienced some unforeseen challenges during its recent edition.

One prominent issue that surfaced was related to internet connectivity. As attendees flooded the Jacob K. Javits Center, the sheer volume of people attempting to access the internet led to significant congestion. This resulted in slow and unreliable connections, making it difficult for many attendees to utilize their devices for various purposes, including accessing event information, sharing their experiences on social media, and staying connected with friends and fellow fans.

In the experience of attendees at the event, Artist Alley was notably devoid of activity. Many talented artists were displaced from Artist Alley to accommodate more renowned and costly comic artists on the show floor. Consequently, several convention-goers missed out on encountering talented artists simply because they were unaware of their presence on the show floor. During the event, they had the opportunity to engage with an outstanding artist, Kelly McMahon, who shed light on the fact that most artists had to actively contend for a spot at Artist Alley, revealing the competitive nature of securing a table at the event. It was also a bad time for the center’s wifi to not work as many artists had QR codes displayed on their desks along with the payment swipes. The problem is, the bad connection affected their sales tremendously.

Another hiccup at the event was the difficulties some attendees faced when trying to access QR codes. QR codes are commonly used for various purposes at conventions, from ticket scanning to accessing exclusive content. However, it was reported that several attendees had trouble scanning these codes due to technical glitches and network issues. This inconvenience, though not universal, did disrupt the smooth flow of activities for some con-goers, highlighting the importance of reliable technology infrastructure at such large-scale events.

On a rather bizarre note, the event also witnessed an incident that left attendees baffled. Reports emerged that an individual defecated on the show floor, creating an unsanitary and uncomfortable situation for everyone present. This incident not only marred the convention’s overall atmosphere but also raised questions about event security and the behavior of certain attendees. It served as a reminder that maintaining a safe and respectful environment at conventions like New York Comic Con is essential for the enjoyment of all participants.

This year’s New York Comic Con left some attendees feeling a bit underwhelmed in terms of the vendor presence. While the convention traditionally boasts a diverse array of vendors offering a wide range of merchandise, there was a noticeable shortage of vendors in comparison to previous years. 

Additionally, some felt that there was an overemphasis on anime-related content, which, while exciting for fans of the genre, may have overshadowed other facets of pop culture. Furthermore, the show floor appeared strikingly similar to what attendees had experienced in previous editions of the event, with little to no discernible innovations or unique attractions. Overcrowding was also an issue, as the convention was bustling with attendees, leading to long lines and congested walkways, making it a challenging environment for many to navigate comfortably.

This contrast with San Diego Comic-Con was particularly evident in the available activities and experiences for attendees. Many participants felt that New York Comic Con offered fewer engaging and unique opportunities compared to its West Coast counterpart. San Diego Comic-Con has earned a reputation for its immersive attractions, exclusive panels, and high-profile celebrity appearances. In contrast, some attendees noted that New York Comic Con lacked the same level of excitement and innovation in its programming. The striking difference in the scale and diversity of activities between the two conventions became quite evident for those who had experienced both.

Overall, the combination of the ongoing labor strikes and a perceived deficit in offerings at New York Comic Con contributed to a less satisfying experience for some attendees. While the convention still provided a platform for fans to connect and celebrate their passions, the differences between this year’s New York Comic Con and other major events in the fandom world became quite apparent, leaving attendees and enthusiasts looking forward to more robust and engaging experiences in the future.

CULTURE Con NYC 2023: Day Two, An Immersive Approach

Sunday, October 8, 2023. Duggal Greenhouse, Brooklyn, New York. —In the spirit of Culture Con, on day two, I thought I would take a more immersive approach to experiencing the conference and the people, businesses and influencers that give shape to this BIPOC (black and indigenous people of color) artistic cultural movement. If you are just reading this article for the first time and missed the first installment “Culture Con, 2023: Day 1”, the 2-day event was created in 2019 by, The Creative Collective,  a community organization made for black and brown creatives. Culture Con was created to celebrate change makers and culture shifters in the BIPOC community. 

The conference has since grown in its offering, now including a Creative Career Job Fair that included companies: Amazon Studios, Clinique, Max, NBCUniversal, Google, Walmart, Shea Moisture, and Kickstarter; along with a seminar that offers industry insights to aspiring young black and brown professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, techs, and so much more. The panels are designed to shine a light on potential professional and lifestyle pathways for the historically disenfranchised artistic community; encouraging them to build wealth, community and to utilize the resources within their arsenal. The panels also serve as a means to combat ‘gatekeeping’ a willful act or tendency of withholding essential resources and insights to our fellow brothers and sisters within the black and brown community out of fear of the scarcity and lack.

I arrived at 10:30 am sharp, enough time to sit in on the first panel discussion, “Nothing Moves Without Us: Reclaiming Our Stories” led by multifaceted creative and influencer, Kyle Price, the creator of the “Make It a Moment” , a lifestyle show that creates a safe space for Black queer & gay men to share their experiences through conversation in an attempt to build community. The multifaceted black creator  began his career in media, starring on SlayTV’s, “Love @ First Night” (2016 – 2020, Terry & Sean Torrington) and shortly signed to the South African based “Cover Model Management” and “Vie Management”; he would now be adding a slash and the words  “Culture Con Discussion Host”, beside his name.  On his panel sat the invisible hands that moved the event, the Director of Integrated Marketing at AMC Networks, Sharese Bembury-Coakley; Vice President of Strategy at the award-winning, full-service consumer marketing agency, Team Epiphany, Jarrett Cobbs; and Carri Twigg, the Co-founder and Head of Development for Culture House media, a Black/Brown, Women owned, full service, premium film and TV production company that specializes in storytelling about the urgent cultural questions confronting America and the world.

The panel zeroed in on the impact of BIPOC culture and how the essence of our daily behavior and day to day activities (like social media engagement) drives compelling narratives the world takes notice of, and sadly capitalizes from without our knowledge. The panel highlighted the importance of data to support what we already know and its untapped potential as a career in the black community. The discussion delved into ideating more inclusive and equitable futures for BIPOC in the creative industry.

VP, Jarrett Cobbs, shared in a brief interview with The Knockturnal, the importance of data when stepping into a creative space, understanding the demographic within an audience and how the decision makers utilize that information to sell black narratives, create products or a “target audience” to promote media and products to, “…the people that sit on the other side of the decision making table, don’t know of, or understand our culture; so data helps them to translate that information through organizations. [That data also helps us] to get recognized, paid fairly and compensated. So without that information, we can be sidestepped and not paid our fair value. Data is extremely important to proving our use-case (a written description of how users will perform tasks on websites, with television viewing, etc) for what we do within culture.”

Jarrett also stated that though this isn’t the most glamorous career, as it is technical in nature and back-end facing it poses an ever growing need for BIPOC persons to be involved in the “millions of decisions being made every day based on the data generated from our communities, and we are not being included in it; from the reporting, to the recording, to even the questions they’re asking, we’re not being included and the information is not being properly applied to inform how our communities are being served. We need more people on the data analytics side and to take their businesses off of platforms and build more intimate relationships with their customers so that the data becomes more impactful.” 

Shortly after the 30 minute  panel discussion, I took advantage of the clear skies to venture across the lot and into the AMEX Express Shop that featured independently owned BIPOC businesses making a name for themselves and creating generational wealth for their families. The first vendor I met was Mariana of Cut + Clarity (Real Women, Real Stories, Real Jewelry). Branding themselves as a premier destination for customizable, fine jewelry, sustainably made in NYC, the jewelry brand aims to “drive meaningful and impactful conversations to amplify overlooked communities”. Cut + Clarity’s connection with marginalized communities exemplifies the mindful business practices that are valued within BIPOC company culture – to create a more fair and equitable world. Cut + Clarity’s pieces are all inspired creations, made and designed and through the inspiration of collaborations of the jeweler and her brand influencers. One particularly inspiring collaboration of Cut + Clarity included Stephanie Thomas, (@disabilityfashionstylist) and her fashion styling system. Their artistic venture led them to create a jewelry collection for those with physical handicaps; pieces that are “accessible, smart, and fashionable.” 

The Amex Store also included Terminal B (Luxury scented Candles), created by a husband and wife duo in 2020 during the pandemic; the concept of the candles was to share their love of travel and for travel professionals and couples on the move. I was gifted with the NRT terminal candle after having a strong response to its fragrance. The couple crafted this wax blend  in honor of Tokyo (Airport Code: NRT), the capital of Japan,  the world’s most populous metropolis recognized for its technology and innovation while anchoring itself in timeless tradition. The scent was created reminiscent of elements found near the travel destination, black figs to evoke the essence of  “a luxurious event spent on the top floor of a low lit hotel lounge, with panoramic views of Roppongi Hills”. I was immediately pulled in by the musk in the wax and the subtle smokey scent that lingered behind the aroma.

My last pit stop in the AMEX store brought me to Pretty Well Beauty, a premiere clean beauty and wellness destination retail outlet. The brand’s commitment is to offer the highest quality clean, natural, and sustainably-sourced products from across the globe. Their belief, as often echoed in the holistic BIPOC community, “Beauty is, first and foremost, an inside job and what you put on your skin is just as important as what you eat and drink. Clean beauty is more than a trend, it’s a lifestyle!” I fell madly in love with one particular scent, which also happens to be a personal favorite of Mrs. Beyonce Gisele Knowles-Carter, SKN MUSE, body oil that is laced with the fragrance oils of Egyptian honey, moroccan and rose hip; the body oil’s scent is sweet, light and powdery and dissolved as smooth as a serum into my skin. I highly recommend checking out her retail store, located in: Westfield World Trade Center. 

Back on the Main Stage of Culture Con, the panel discussions continued, and high profile names such as Actress and composer Tinashe, who previously covered the 18th digital cover of, The Knockturnal, engaged the crowd in an interviewed by Sidney Madden. The Actress and composer, Tinashe, held a candid conversation about her new brand new album “BB/ANG3L”.

Additional speakers included Candiace Dillard Bassett of Real Housewives of Potomac;  Faith Jenkins of Killer Relationships, and Preston Mitchum of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard. Taryn Finley offered guidance on how to navigate your career after achieving the initial level of success, “the sophomore wins” that tend to trip successful creatives up. Inside insights on “Navigating Your Big Break” for attendees included transparent conversations on creating opportunities and strategic expansion of our career pathways, all while learning to navigate through social media engagement and overcoming with imposter syndrome.

Harlem’s social justice advocate and movement strategist Tamika D. Mallory  discussed  the state of our democracy, why voting in the BIPOC community is critical and how to effectively use our voice to initiate change for the collective. Moderated by Kahlil Greene aka ‘The Gen Z Historian’, the panel discussion captured the audience’s civic engagement and excitement to show up and show out in this upcoming election.

Other speakers included Imani Ellis, Cam Kirk, Luke Lawal Jr. , Brittney Escovedo, Rivea Ruff, Damian Marcano, Vanessa Clifton, Mercedes Cook, Scottie Beam, Sylvia Obell, and Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, with the Day 1 line-up including heavy-hitters like Issa Rae, Jharrel Jerome, Marsai Martin, Teyana Taylor, Ziwe and more (“Culture Con: Day 1”).

I wrapped up the events of the day, showing love, once again to the Resy and American Express curated Resy Dining Hall, featuring culinary delights from famed Black-owned restaurants across the tri-state region, such as Aunts et Uncles and their vegan eatery serving all plant-based dishes, that includes sandwiches and pasta to the likes of  Chef Kwame’s Patty Palace for their Jamaican patties and coco bread curated by Chef Kwame Onwuachi himself. My pick of the day? I shimmed to the the long line outside of Charles’ Pan-Fried Chicken, the James Beard nominated chef and Harlem icon’s soul food for the soul welcomed the longest line of customers and the food did not disappoint. I enjoyed my soulful dish in the VIP section courtesy of MAX “Scene In Black” and sipped refreshing cocktails sponsered by Culture Con’s brand partner, Ciroc.

Culture Con 2023 – NYC, was jam packed with more events than I could (or anyone) cover in two days and well worth standing in the rain (on day one) for. I highly recommend that if you are low on inspiration and in need of a clear path to steer forward in your creative career, this is the place you need to be. If you ever have the opportunity to attend this cultural BIPOC movement, I highly recommend attending at least once in your lifetime; you will not be disappointed.

Exclusive: Norman Reedus Expresses His Acting Versatility on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

During a press invited conference at New York Comic Con for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Norman Reedus spoke candidly about the range of acting he has undertaken throughout this show compared to the main show when we asked him. Known for his iconic portrayal of Daryl Dixon in “The Walking Dead,” Reedus expressed his enthusiasm for embracing diverse characters and genres.

Norman Reedus, reflecting on expanding his range on his acting when we asked him, shared a glimpse into his thought process and motivation. As he discussed his enduring role as Daryl Dixon in “The Walking Dead,” he emphasized the personal and professional growth he has experienced over the years. Reedus candidly expressed his desire to evolve as an actor and explore new dimensions of character portrayal.

“I’m aging in real time and I’ve learned lots of lessons. I wanted to try to do something different. I spoke a lot about finding vulnerabilities in him (Daryl) and I don’t mind being the hero, I just don’t want to know that I am the hero,” said Reedus.

Reedus stressed the significance of working to earn character moments and commencing from a position of vulnerability. He aimed to genuinely capture Daryl Dixon’s challenging journey, where he grapples with both physical and emotional brokenness as he embarks on the next phase of his life. Additionally, Reedus underscored his intention to portray Daryl in a distinct manner, particularly in showcasing the character’s brighter moments, setting him apart from the main show.

“I wanted to earn the moments and I wanted to start low. And as he character, he’s broken when he gets there. He’s physically broken, and he’s finding himself again and becoming a man again in a different way.”

Norman Reedus opened up about a specific, pivotal moment in his acting career, which was the scenes he shared with Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Season 7, Episode “The Cell” of “The Walking Dead.” In these scenes, Reedus aimed to portray his character, Daryl Dixon, in a raw and unvarnished manner. He sought to strip Daryl down to his most vulnerable state, emphasizing the character’s brokenness and vulnerability. Reedus explained that the intention behind this approach was to create a compelling character arc in which Daryl could rebuild himself from the ground up, both emotionally and physically on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

“We did it with Negan in The Cell. I remember being the guy down here and trying to fight my way back up and when Negan is like, ‘what’s your name?’ And I don’t say Negan. That’s like a “fuck yeah” moment, you know? I wanted to be stripped down starting from zero.”

Saturday, October 7, 2023. Duggal Greenhouse, Brooklyn, New York. — Saturday morning rain showers fell hard and heavy in the borough of Brooklyn; but it didn’t stop the main event from happening on Flushing Avenue.  The annual cultural mecca for Black and Brown creatives, CultureCon, opened its lines to the likes of designers, brand influencers, culture benders, film talents, small business owners, media press outlets and many more. CultureCon, founded in 2019, is the fastest growing conference and brings together creatives and changemakers of color that aim to elevate their social and professional networks. These bountiful creatives intend to make a mark on the culture and within the communities they serve. In an effort to keep the focus “community centered” the conference sets its sights on celebrating prominent and innovative voices leading the way. It is their hope to inspire attendees to make notable impacts in their respective lanes, creative causes and to become an infectious impact on the world at large, as a BIPOC creative-thought leader.

This year’s CultureCon presented by Creative Collective included presenting partners: Max, Amex, Shea Moisture, Amazon PRIME, Freevee, Clinique, Google, Ciroc, Bullet Bourbon, Seedlip (Non Alcoholic Spirits), Patreon, Paramount (Content For Change), KickStarter, NBCUniversal,Spotify, Walmart, Tubi, School For Experiential Education in Design, The Startup Collection | Aveeno, Ben & Jerry’s, Coca Cola, LTK, Visible by Verizon, Dotdash Meredith, LCKR, Getty Images, Nielsen, TikTok, #CultureTags, NPR, and The Tillary Hotel- Brooklyn.

CultureCon encourages the creative collective body by honoring notable influencers, industry trailblazers, tastemakers and celebrities. The two day event featured panelists that discussed navigating and managing the pressures in the film and entertainment industries; obtaining careers in the growing field of tech and various degrees of corporate spaces. Other major topics offered insights on personal branding; overcoming the socio-economic factors that impede or inspire creativity; investments, crowdfunding for business and managing personal finances with financial gurus such as Financial Educator and New York Times Bestseller, Tiffany “the Budgetnista”; as well as discussions on maintaining self care while launching brands and building empires.

 

This year the 2023 CultureCon brought on a new facet to their ever growing pilgrimage, now including in its activation booths, a Creative Career Job Fair that allowed the attendees to meet one on one with recruiters from: Amazon Studios, Clinique, Max, NBCUniversal, Google, Walmart, Shea Moisture, and Kickstarter. Career hopefuls had the opportunities to provide or upload their digital resumes within the talent submission pool for further consideration and a chance to land their dream jobs.

Day one of the CultureCon event included the prolific and legendary American Actress and Writer,  Issa Rae (Insecure, Rap Sh!t, The Photograph, The Lovebirds, Barbie) discussed her organization, ColorCreative, and how it cultivated its initiative, the Find Your People Program (FYPP), to mentor aspiring creatives of color through an intensive creative program.

Emmy-Award winning actor and rapper, Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us, Moonlight, Full Circle) sat down with podcast host and entrepreneur, Bimma Williams to share his creative process in music and his career journey. Sharing insights on “When They See Us”  and providing more insight on his new album “I’m a Virgo”, inspired the crowd who remained engaged during his interview with Bima. 

Actress and Film Producer, Marsai Martin (Blackish, Little, Fantasy Football), at the blossoming age of 18 years, took to the stage to share her newest venture as the global brand ambassador for Clinique and shared her creative evolution in beauty after partnering with the high-end beauty brand. Marsai spoke on her numerous achievements, multiple NAACP Image Awards, BET Awards, her historic role as the youngest executive producer in Hollywood, and founding her company Genius Entertainment.

This year’s CultureCon honoree, was the illustrious superstar, Teyana Taylor(A Thousand and One, Coming 2 America, The Breaks). The multihyphenate shared the stage in an intimate discussion with Emmy-Award winning journalist, Eric Jones, to discuss her incredible career and was rightfully presented with the CultureCon 2023 award by her mother and children. Teyana dazzled the crowd with her star studded aura. She handed out pearls of wisdom to the attendees; mentioning that her faith in God kept her strong in mind and spirit; and reminding us that the wait  for our promise is actually our  time of preparation for a great outcome and to learn to give ourselves flowers by being our own glade plugin; further exemplifying why she earned the right to be acclaimed as a cultural icon.

TV host and internet icon, Ziwe closed day one with a hilarious conversation alongside, DeAndre Brown  AKA The Corporate Baddie. “Black Friend: Essays,” and her journey from being an intern with big dreams to a certified boss in the midst of her dream career.

On day one, I found myself richly inspired by panelist, Rap recording artist, Lola Brooke, who eagerly shared her love of performing on stage. The “Don’t Play With” lyricist lit up as she discussed that she knew in her heart she’d always wanted to perform; she said  that before bed at night, she recalls falling asleep with music in her ears and dreaming that she was on stage. She expressed staying grounded and knowing that every decision that she’d made “fell on me” and that remaining centered was above all else, priority for her. 

Day one of CultureCon lunch consisted of jollof rice ( a tomato and rice-based dish that is widely eaten across West and Central Africa) sweet plantains, gold coast slaw,  grilled peri-peri chicken with a Bissap Hibiscus juice from African Chop House, and yes it was delicious. Other featured restaurants included the Crabby Shack, Ras Plant Based, OxKale, Cafe Rue Dix, File Gumbo Bar, Aunt Et uncles, Charles Pan Fried Chicken, the James Beard nominated chef and Harlem icon’s soul food for the soul pick, and Chef Kwame’s Patty Palace. 

By the close of Day one’s festivities, my  black mesh CultureCon tote was full to the brim with goodies.  I collected my goodies from Clinique whose volumizing mascara and skin moisturizer has instantly become a new favorite in my makeup arsenal; magazine giveaways (and cookies) from the largest publisher in North America, Dotdash Meredith; free beverages from CocaCola and SmartWater; and an adorable “Black Men We Love You” men’s care kit from Shea Moisture.
