Vulture Festival 2021 took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
It included two days of both outdoor and indoor panels and screenings. On Sunday November 14th, I attended a special advance screening of the ‘Queen Sugar’ Season 6 Finale Episode. The screening was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Angelica Bastien. Lead stars Kofi Siriboe, Tina Lifford, Bianca Lawson, Nicholas L. Ashe, and Tammy Townsend participated in the talk.
The season finale was emotional and had the audience engaged and reactive throughout its entirety. During the discussion, the cast spoke about the love and special relationships cultivated on set throughout the years. The show, just renewed for its seventh and final season, has allowed strong bonds to form amongst the ensemble of actors. Tammy Townsend being a new edition to the Queen Sugar family spoke about feeling immediately welcomed on set. It’s a great environment that allows for the actors to play, be vulnerable, and get into the script.
Cast members spoke on key moments filming season six during quarantine. The isolating feelings at times, the location itself feeling like a time warp, and being away from their families. They took pride in the effort collectively put into the show and the story they were able to tell on screen this season. Depicting black love on screen in a raw, emotional, and effective way is something they felt was very special but also very important. Positive representation of black love and black stories in general is one aspect of the show the cast takes pride in.
Queen Sugar seasons one through six are available for streaming on Hulu.
