On Monday, June 9th, Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal launched its 30th anniversary celebration with an unforgettable evening of cocktails, cuisine, and culture at Fandi Mata in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Held ahead of this year’s Bar Convent Brooklyn, the anniversary event brought together industry tastemakers, spirits enthusiasts, and cultural connectors under one roof to raise a glass to three decades of pioneering mezcal excellence.
A Night of Music, Movement, and Mezcal
Despite the rainy weather, the energy inside was warm and electric. The vibrant sounds, flowing mezcal, and beautifully plated dishes created an atmosphere that was both celebratory and inviting. One of the evening’s most memorable highlights was the spontaneous group dancing, including a joyful moment when guests joined in on the Cha Cha Slide, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the brand.
A personal standout from the night was the chance to meet fascinating guests in such a festive yet intimate environment. But beyond the fun, what truly resonated was learning more about the people behind the spirit.
Honoring the Families Behind the Flavor
Del Maguey took time to honor the ten Zapotec and Mixtec families who produce their mezcal across various villages in Oaxaca. These families, many of whom have been partners since the brand’s founding, handcraft each batch using time-honored methods passed down through generations.
The mezcal is produced in small palenques (distilleries) using earth ovens, stone mills, and copper or clay pot stills—techniques that preserve the cultural integrity and terroir of each village. Del Maguey’s respect for these artisan producers is more than just symbolic; it’s deeply embedded in how the brand operates. Every label on a Del Maguey bottle proudly bears the name of the village where it was made, underscoring the brand’s commitment to transparency, sustainability, and equitable partnership.
From Vision to Legacy
From its beginnings in 1995, founded by artist Ron Cooper and educator Steve Olson, Del Maguey has grown from a visionary project into a multi-award-winning leader in the agave spirits category. Over the past three decades, the brand has elevated mezcal to international prominence, without ever compromising the traditions or people who form its foundation.
As the first night in a year-long celebration, this event set the tone for what’s to come, where every sip is a story, and every gathering is a nod to the vibrant culture that fuels Del Maguey’s journey.
Thank you for the invitation. I hope this summer is filled with fun and more opportunities to celebrate culture, heritage, and the communities that bring it all to life.
