Last Thursday The Knockturnal was on the scene for Dave East’s exclusive mixtape release party.
Held at the Genius headquarters which, in a very Brooklyn-esque way could easily be mistaken for an abandoned warehouse, The Kairi Chanel mixtape release party was a lituation. The party was co-sponsored by Mass Appeal Records, Magnum Condoms, Rap Genius and Def Jam Recordings. The evening was DJed by Statik Selektah with open bar and a live performance by Dave East himself . The crowd was a mix of industry people, Genius employees, label reps, journalists and old school hip hop heads who love that East takes it back with his sound.
Kairi Chanel, named after East’s daughter who’s now 8 months old, was inspired by the defining moment of the birth of his daughter. The 15 track mixtape features The Game, Fab, 2 Chainz, Cam’ron, Sevyn Streeter, Beanie Sigel, and Jazzy Amra. East is a awesome story teller, which is probably why Nas co-signed the talented rapper. Whether he’s elaborately illustrating being robbed by an enticing hustler in “Keisha” or incorporating his religion, Islam, into verses on “Can’t Ignore” or “From The Heart,” East seamlessly depicts his life and experiences through words with his impressive lyricism. Those of you who’ve been following Dave East might’ve recently heard that he’s officially part of the Def Jam family now and that his forthcoming debut album will be executively produced by Nas. You can now stream Kairi Chanel on Datpiff.
