We traveled to Bellport NY for the annual Boys and Girls Club of Bellport Area Beach Ball 2016, hosted by Alexandra Lebenthal and Jay Diamond. Check out the scene.
Bellport has managed to weather the pressures of being the “it” spot for New Yorkers looking to get away from the city in the summer. For years, it’s maintained a polite and comfortable atmosphere centered around its strong community outreach programs. For the annual Boys and Girls’ Club of Bellport Beach Ball 2016, the focus was on fun and family. Low pressure, classic Long Island style, and summer fun took over the Diamond and Lebenthal house for Saturday evening, starting with skilled performers from the Boys and Girls’ club playing the steel drums around the pool. Guests included Charlie Rose, who was the first person to arrive, Bob Morris, Lucy Danziger, Keith Pollock, and many more.
A delightful variety of snacks and drinks were passed (including tiny mojitos!) as well as a seafood station, empanada bar, and selection of meats.
During the evening, silent auction items were on full view, from a Ralph Lauren handbag to custom beach bikes to fine art. Later a live auction hilariously presented by Terrence Noonan offered supporters everything from VIP Beyoncé tickets to an African Safari, which went for over $5,000. Of course, not to forget a stunning fireworks display by Grucci, also supporters of the Boys and Girls’ Club, and donated by Alexandra Lebenthal. After the fireworks, over 40 youths aged 10-17 years performed a synchronized routine to Pitbull’s tracks, ‘Fireball,’ and ‘All the Way Up.’ It was cheeky and impressive, and the kids were very clearly enjoying themselves. Considering many of the kids volunteered to serve and help during the event, it was good to see them have a chance to enjoy the night amid their hard work.
But what’s it all for? Why go through the trouble? We spoke with Boys and Girls club director Sybil Johnson, who was looking festive in a purple and pink ensemble. When asked about the evening she said, “tonight was about putting on a party with a purpose, and the purpose is the BGCBA’s important mission that our youth reach their full potential.” She later said the most challenging thing about BGCBA is “getting the resources”. Understandable, but when the community is as strong as this one, there’s no question there’s a passion for helping one another.
