Justine Marjan Brings Back 2000’s Grunge at NYFW

The celebrity hairstylist put an edgy spin on vintage glamour for Christian Cowan's SS '27 show

Since becoming a lead stylist for NYFW in 2017, TRESemmé Partner & Celebrity Stylist Justine Marjan has created countless custom looks for all kinds of collections.

Friday, September 11, marked her ninth year as the lead hairstylist for Christian Cowan’s NYFW runway. This year’s lookbook featured two custom designs that embrace a dramatic, fantastical, siren-esque feel. These two, dubbed  “the Siren Slipknot” and “the Mermaid Messy Knot,” both feature soft bends, crimping, and effortless, imperfect knots tied together with a glossy finish. Other styles incorporated bows and netting for added texture and drama.

The styles contrast strikingly with Marjan’s work for Cowan’s previous collections. As the lead stylist for Cowan’s Fall/Winter 26’ collection, Marjan curated styles that centered around clean lines, sleek silhouettes, and minimal texture variations. Featured looks such as “the glossy side part” and “the androgynous bob” spoke to the slick-back looks and “clean girl aesthetic” that have dominated hair trends over the past five years.

Marjan’s pivot for Spring/Summer ’27 show may be an early sign that the trend pendulum is swinging back towards maximalism, rebellion, and deconstructed femininity in coming seasons. “The crimp is back,” Marjan shared backstage, noting that she sees hair moving away from hyper-polished slick-backs and back into early 2000s grunge. As such, it’s only fitting that this season’s looks channeled the flare, drama, and stylized messiness that defined the era.

The hair, of course, was also designed to complement Cowan’s SS ’27 collection, which the designer cited as being inspired by icons of old Hollywood and the tension between glamour and underlying darkness. The collection examined the construction of female archetypes in that era, and Marjan’s siren-inspired looks were designed to echo those dark, feminine undertones while still reading visually in step with the clothes. Because several pieces featured high necklines, Marjan shared that she was deliberate about keeping hair off the face while still building in”a lot of movement and this wispy, undone texture.”

The looks were perfected using products from the TRESemmé A-List Collection as well as the TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray, a backstage staple and stylist favorite. Designed to give stylists tools to create polished results while maintaining movement, the A-List Collection, Marjan said, played an essential role in building runway-ready looks. The brand is also celebrating a major milestone this season, as this week marks its 20th year backstage at NYFW. Over two decades, TRESemmé has become the go-to backstage partner for stylists working to deliver precise, runway-ready artistry season after season.
