Film Review: Eternals

Marvel’s latest entry has the qualities of good filmmaking but falls victim to uneven pacing.

Eternals definitely makes a very deep impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it isn’t necessarily the best one so far. The film is significantly different from any Marvel movie yet, while still holding on to its roots filled with cliches and familiar plot lines. However, there were times where I felt like it was a film rather than just another superhero flick.

Four-time Academy Award Winner Chloe Zhao was able to definitely leave a positive mark in the MCU, but falls victim to the inability to adapt as well as other directors have. Chloe’s strong suit lies in how tight the characters seem towards the end and the loyalty they feel towards each other, making them feel like a team rather than a collective.

In theme with some of her past films, she has her characters deal with introspection, making the film about their journey as a team rather than actual fighting. The depth of the characters, however, is stunted by the fact that there are so many. Without spoiling too much, the film’s highlights are without a doubt Kumail Nanjiani’s comic relief. He was able to add comedy in places that didn’t even seem possible, but in the end he, along with another hilarious character that I won’t give away.

It’s honestly too hard to tell how I feel about this movie other than the fact it’s very different from other Marvel entries but that doesn’t necessarily make it better than the rest. However, it’s not necessarily the worst and is worth giving a shot if you’re a loyal marvel fan.
