In NBC’s new show Good Girls, when three suburban moms get tired of trying to make ends meet, they decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store.
But when the manager catches a glimpse of one of them and the loot is far more than they expected, it doesn’t take long for the three best friends to realize the perfect getaway will be harder than they think. We caught up with Retta at NBC’s Mid-Season Cocktail Party at the Four Seasons Hotel.
The Knockutnral: How excited are you to be a part of this show?
Retta: Oh, I’m excited. I loved Jenna Bans’ script. It’s rare that I read something and like it immediately. And it was one of the few scripts that I have read and liked immediately and wanted to be a part of, hands down, not knowing who would be involved at all.
The Knockutnral: And speak about the fabulous ensemble with these great actresses.
Retta: I love the girls. We hit it off when we first met. And then because we shot in Atlanta we had a lot of time together and we got to bond basically because we were away from home together. So much so that now that Christina is up in Calgary shooting her show, we talk almost every day. So it did give us an opportunity to become good friends.
The Knockutnral: Can you share a fun story from set?
Retta: We did have a day where we were shooting a scene in the car and we were hungry, and so, we were ordering Postmates from the car. And because we were moving we couldn’t figure out where to tell the guy to drop it off because we were constantly moving. Yeah, so that became a fun Instagram story at the time trying to get Postmates to find us to give us Steak ‘n Shake.
The Knockutnral: What do you hope audiences take away from the show?
Retta: Well, I would love for girls to feel like they aren’t beholden to men and that they’re empowered from within. You can count on your friends and your girlfriends, and your family. You don’t have to only rely on men. If you can find a man that is reliable that’s amazing, but don’t feel like if you haven’t, you’re not succeeding in life because you haven’t. But also, that you can take initiative even though our characters don’t take the best most legal initiative, that you can take initiative and don’t fear it. And part of life is screwing up and then figuring it out.
The Knockutnral: And today is International Women’s Day. Is there a woman you would like to highlight who has impacted your career?
Retta: My mom is very supportive and she’s very, very proud of me, which is nice. I was saying how last week when I was in town she came in town to see our billboard in Times Square, which is huge because she does not like traveling into the city. She worked here for years and so her time coming to the city, she was over it. And she was here for 9/11 all of that, so it really is not her happy place. And the fact that she got her girlfriends to come into town, take the train, and come into town and take pictures of my billboards. She’s supportive and always telling me proud she is of me and how she respects that I went after what I wanted to go after. And so, she’s my idol right now.
