Members of Society and Viennese Aficionados spent the evening at the Penn Club for the 62nd Viennese Opera Ball Kick-Off Champagne Celebration.
On a cold Monday evening in October, guests socialized in the warm and historic Penn Club in NYC. The conversation was civil and polite, like the event they were celebrating. With guests in attendance like Eva Chickering, Georg Heindl, Rachel Hickey, Wina Huang and more it was by all accounts an international affair. Of course, what else could it be but The 62nd Viennese Opera Ball Kick-Off Champagne Celebration.
Co-chairs Silvia Frieser and Michael Pecnik and Executive Committee member Laine Siklos hosted a Private Champagne Reception at The Penn Club to celebrate the formation of the ball. It involves assembling the men and women around the world to take part in the white tie gala. The ball is will be held on February 10 at the Waldorf Astoria under the auspices of the U.S. Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
The Viennese Opera Ball is the oldest white tie charity gala in New York, and this year the Ball will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Austria’s unofficial national anthem, Johann Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz. It’s truly a fascinating and historic event, it preserves the emotion and formality of the past, so interesting in the context of a city and a world that is in an urgent position to move forward and dismiss tradition. Guests will travel from around the world to attend the prestigious event and dance the iconic waltz in the Grand Ballroom, with a hope of seeing a white horse drawn carriage. This theatricality is so charming and is the very definition of spectacle.
The Viennese Opera Ball in New York has been a representative of Vienna’s cultural legacy since 1955. It is elegance and tradition in the city. The Ball operates as a cultural platform and builds bridges to connect present day New York City with 19th Century Vienna, and people of varying heritages, continents and generations, to bring traditional glamour to the city that never sleeps. It is a niche situation, but for those who may be concerned or even simply curious, this is a great opportunity to get immersed.
