Recently rumored to have a role in Green Lantern, Chris Pine will be playing the possible love interest of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman

It was all but certain that Chris Pine would be joining the DC Cinematic Universe at some point as the next Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps. So it’s surprising to see that The Wrap has reported Chris Pine will be playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot as the titular character. While there haven’t been any plot details released for the film yet, it’s reported that Trevor “will be no mere love interest for Gadot’s Diana Prince, as there will be plenty of action to keep him busy.”

Steve Trevor comics

So who is Steve Trevor? In the comics, Trevor is an intelligence officer who crash lands on Wonder Woman’s home of Paradise Island, and she follows him back to America. Most situations involving Trevor and Diana typically involves a sort of reverse damsel in distress, with Diana coming to Steve’s rescue a lot of the time. It’ll be interesting to see how the role is written, but in a year that has had two insanely strong male/female co-leads with Mad Max: Fury Road and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, it’s clearly not impossible for two strong characters of different genders. But when it comes down to it, the title of the film is Wonder Woman, so it’s important that Gal Gadot is given her chance to shine.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and will be in theaters June 23, 2017.
