Believed to be the Wolverine-esque replacement for the X-Men, it appears Channing Tatum is close to exiting ‘Gambit’
One of the biggest franchises in film, the X-Men are a very well known property. But the one character everyone knows is the Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. It seems that Jackman’s time as the iconic character may be coming to a close which has caused 20th Century Fox to go and find someone new to take that mantle. Enter Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit. Over the last few years, Tatum has come out and proved himself to be one of the most bankable actors working today. Getting Tatum for the X-Men franchise was a perfect choice that unfortunately may not actually happen.
As reported by The Wrap, Tatum’s deal for Gambit is very close to falling apart and may be planning to exit the project. Director Rupert Wyatt has been at the casting stage for Tatum’s female co-star (one name includes Lea Seydoux), so losing Tatum at this stage of the game would be a HUGE blow. The Wrap mentions that Tatum has “larger ambitions”, which includes possibly making his directing debut at some point. Considering that Gambit is expected to be in theaters October 7, 2016, things will have to be figured out soon if they want to hit that deadline. Whether that means convincing Tatum to come on and stay for the project or finding someone else, we’ll see what happens.
