‘The Varnell Hill Show’ is a spin-off of ‘Martin’ that follows late-night talk show host Varnell. The series delves into the chaos that goes on behind the scenes of a talk show in an ever-evolving industry. Rachel Perkins, portrayed by Wendy Raquel Robinson, is the executive producer of Varnell’s late-night talk show. Robinson’s character is professional and strong-minded. She is responsible for meeting the entertainment industry’s demands that Varnell opposes so strongly.
During our interview with Robinson, she shared her experience on the set of ‘The Varnell Hill Show.’ Surrounded by comedians and talent, Robinson describes the atmosphere on set as “fun, improvisational, spontaneous.” Her character, Rachel, represents adaptation and balance, helping preserve the traditions that made Varnell so special.
The unique part about ‘The Varnell Hill Show’ is the inclusion of breaking the fourth wall, allowing audiences to hear an inner monologue. Robinson stated that this was the “best part” for her. Maintaining a professional attitude in an environment with big egos can be challenging, but breaking the fourth wall invites audiences to know what she’s really thinking. That insight results in a connection and deeper understanding of the character.
