The Knockturnal recently interviewed Javicia and Robin and they shared their excitement for the new season of Batwoman. Javicia Leslie previously played in “God Friended Me,” The Family Business” and “Always a Bridesmaid.” She told us about the unique role of playing a superhero, “I had never been in this position to be able to do so many things in one role, it’s an action show, but it’s also still a superhero show. So it’s fantasy and it’s also very grounded.” She described two roles she plays in the show, both as Ryan and Batwoman.
Robin Givens has played some amazing roles in shows and movies over the years, including “Head of the State,” The Family That Preys,” “90210” and “Once upon a Time.” Robin stars in the new season of Batwoman as the mysterious and powerful Jada Jet. She told us, “as an actor at this moment in my life, I love that kind of combo of powerhouse woman and mom.”
Season 3 of Batwoman continues the story with new and returning characters. Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) continues to carry out the legacy of the bat and protect Gotham. On The Scene: Penélope Cruz, Milena Smit and Cast talk ‘Parallel Mothers’ At NYFF closing night [Video]
After an exciting, beautiful, art filled two weeks, Film at Lincoln Center concluded its 59th annual New York Film Festival (NYFF) on Friday night. Their final event was a showing of Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, “Parallel Mothers.”
Starring Penélope Cruz, the film tells the story of Cruz’s character Janis, a middle aged photographer, and the adolescent Ana, a young woman desperately trying to work through the many traumas of her life. The two women meet for the first time in a hospital room, both about to give birth to what will be their first children. Two women, from such different worlds, each suffering from their own rough patches in their lives, with wildly different feelings on the world they are about to embark on.
Meeting again at different points in their lives, the twists and turns in Janis and Ana’s stories are far from over. With so many small paradoxes leading up to one massive twist, this film is truly visionary and will have any viewer on the very edge of their seat the whole time, you never truly know what’s coming next. I couldn’t imagine a better film to end the festival on this year. We talked to the cast and the director of this brilliant film on the last night of NYFF’s pink carpet! Check out the full conversation above!
Exclusive: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer and Cast Talk ‘Halloween Kills’ [Video]
Michael Meyers was cooked medium-well at the end of the last installment of the Halloween series, yet he’s still thriving well into old age. The masked marauder returns to terrorize Haddonfield, Ill, in a bloody, frenetic, funhouse mirror of a film that will satisfy your lust for terror and gory gags.
Longtime protagonist Laurie Strode is in the ER with a very gnarly stab wound as the mayhem begins. Her relief at having burned Meyers to a crisp at the end of the previous film is short-lived as reports come in that he’s stomping through town gouging eyes out and stabbing fools to death.
Beloved characters from the very first film return in dramatic fashion, with Anthony Micheal Hall, Kyle Richards and Marion Chambers reprising their iconic roles 43 years after they first appeared. What starts as a night of storytelling and drinks for the returning trio turns deadly when Meyers shows up in the parking lot with his typical demure, understated approach to making new friends.
The terror in this film is two-fold. Our A story is of course the murderous rampage through Haddonfield, but there’s also a freakish mob scene unfolding at the hospital where Laurie is bruised and bleeding. There’s an allegory here about groupthink and the contagious nature of fear, and it’s delineated with impeccable and incredibly inventive direction by David Gordon Green, whose only other horror title is the previous Halloween movie.
The cinematography is breathtaking, and the kills are…beautiful? They’re both ultra-realistic and campy, sight gags made for maximum on-screen impact.
Curtis is tremendous as ever in a sort of Long Days Journey into Night role, confronting demons and trying to hold her family together. You can’t take your eyes off her deeply human portrayal of a woman who’s been terrorized for decades by an obsessive, deranged man.
I left the theater desperate to see the next chapter unfold. This is gonna be the longest year of my life.
